**Disquiet Junto Project 0678: Commonplace Playlist**  
The Assignment: Create a sonic diary of the past year with a dozen (or more) super-brief segments.

As has become the tradition at the end of each calendar year, this week’s Junto project is a sound journal: a selective audio history of your past 12 months.

Much like the previous year's assignment, the excerpts here are drawn from a variety of sources: phone recordings, hand-held recorders, specialised rigs, phone videos, an AudioMoth and a couple of Junto assignments.

A lot happened this year. From a creative standpoint it was one of the most creatively active periods I can remember, covering virtually every artistic outlet I wrap my practice around.

- 2. February - drying seaweed at low tide, Little Gorge (Fleurieu Peninsula)
- 3. March - Lawrence English rings bell at Adelaide Festival of The Arts opening event, North Terrace, Adelaide. (audio extracted from phone video)
- 4. April - my installation work, Self Noise in-situ recording. *Neoterica* group exhibition, Adelaide Railway Station concourse.
- 5. May - guitar sketch, home.
- 6. June - mid-morning tide, Rapid Bay (Fleurieu Peninsula)
- 7. July - Junto 0655 excerpt.
- 8. August - Caffe on Bungala, Normanville (Fleurieu Peninsula)
- 9. September - Sulphur crested cockatoos on the way home from work, Urrbrae. (audio extracted from phone video)
- 10. October - Fleurieu Folk Festival ambience, Willunga. This is the end of a recording where a work colleague sees me and asks if I'm recording the surrounding ambience, which of course I am.
- 11. November - Junto 0670 excerpt.
- 12. December - AudioMoth recording of ultrasonic vocalisation from grey-headed flying fox passing over home in Parkside at 9:02pm, 20th December. Audio excerpt transposed down 36 semitones.

[Disquiet_Junto_0678] 2024 in summary

13th year of Disquiet Ice.  For 2025, I used the ice recording for #53 back in 2013.  I put 6 of them in Samplr on the iPad with various settings and coordinates.  Ran it through my effects rig:  "Green Tape" on the Echosystem, "Green Ghost" on the Empress Reverb, and either Mosaic or Tunnel on the Microcosm.  I can't remember. Aeolian winds [Disquiet # 0681]

Hello, this is a variation of a track I've been working on for a "all percussion" project. I decided to boost the reverb time and amount on all kick and bass drum hits and keep the manual little percussions fully dry, just leaving the ambient sound of my room that's a tad more  alive  than a small studio room, but still very dry. And no reverb added.

I think this assignment's idea was interesting and worked alright here, all the bamboo drums and little hi pitched manual toys sound in your face and the "Booms!"  are extremely wet and it works. I guess.

**Disquiet Junto Project 0688: Sign Up**  
The Assignment: Interpret a routine public sign as a musical instruction.

Step 1: Think about signs you see near where you live or work, the sort of routine public signage one generally takes for granted. Consider in particular signs that, unintentionally, are open to broader interpretation than might have been intended.

Step 2: Choose a sign from Step 1.

Step 3: Willfully interpret the sign you selected in Step 2 as a musical instruction of some sort.

Step 4: Record a track in which you follow the musical instruction you inferred in Step 3.

Note: When posting the track, please, if possible, include a photograph or other rendering of the sign you employed.

**Disquiet Junto Project 0693: Melody Sorted**  
The Assignment: Reorganize a familiar song note by note.

Step 1: Choose a familiar song for which you have access to the sheet music.

Step 2: Select a segment of the song, perhaps one round of the chorus and the verse — perhaps more, or less, after you finish reading these instructions.

Step 3: Write down all the notes (and their lengths) in the main melodic line.

Step 4: Alphabetize the notes, and also sort them by length, in ascending order, so an Ab goes before an A, and a quarter note goes before a whole note, and so forth. (You might also adjust for where the note falls relative to middle C, starting low and proceeding up.)

Step 5: Record results when all those notes are played in the sequence that was derived during Step 4.

Bonus round: Also consider appending to Step 5 what it sounds like when that same set of notes is played randomly.

The Assignment: Put a piece of music through the dryer.

Step 1: Think about lint for a moment — all the stuff that’s cast off from your clothes when you send them through the dryer.

Step 2: Now consider what might be cast off from your music if you could send your music through the dryer for a cycle or two.

Step 3: Select a piece of your own music, and send it through the metaphorical dryer. What results?

[Disquiet Junto 0695] The Accumulation Solution

Tristan Louth-Robins is a South Australian artist working principally in the medium of sound art and field recording. Ideas of sound and its signification are key elements in Louth-Robins' practice, traversing the space between the visual and aural his work is realised through the mediums of recordings, installation, visual art and performance. He is interested in sound and its associative implications - including its relationship to objects, technology, urban space, memory and the natural world. 


Since 2005, Louth-Robins has presented work in Australia and internationally as a solo artist, whilst also collaborating with artists, writers, researchers, musicians and performers. 

Working across a vast array of activities encompassing composition, sound design, installation art, field recording and workshops, his work has been featured in events such as the Adelaide Festival of Arts (2006), The National Regional Arts Festival (2012), Mildura-Wentworth Arts Festival (2013), Fairfax Festival (2013) and Adelaide Fringe Festival (2014); and selected works exhibited at galleries including The Australian Experimental Art Foundation (2009), SASA Gallery (2012, 2015), Light Square Gallery (2012) and FELT Space (2015). His audio works have been broadcast on radio including Radio National, Classic FM, The BBC (UK), Acoustic Frontiers (USA) and RBB (Germany).

In some words:
Composer, arranger, producer, multi-instrumentalist. Born in Argentina,
I studied music in Buenos Aires, New York, Boston, Los Angeles and Paris.

For 20 years, I developed an important career as a session and backing musician in Argentina and Europe, playing, among other instruments, the bass, touring and recording with many jazz, rock, fusion, world, Latin and tango bands.

At the same time, I worked as an arranger, producer and musical director with many projects and artists in the USA, Argentina and Europe.

From 1992 to 1997, I performed my compositions live with my own band in Buenos Aires and began a solo recording career with the worldwide release of my first album "The Years Alone" on the North American label Green Linnet/Xenophile. On this album I arranged and performed 11 of my songs written between 1986 and 1993. I played most of the instruments, but included guest appearances by some great South American players.

My recording career continued with "Segundo Ciclo" (1997), released worldwide by Timeless Records, and 12 more albums released between 2000 and 2016.

Currently, I work as an on-demand film/TV composer while continuing to play live and produce.
