Silent Fjords

Since its inception in 2019, the Sleeplaboratory compilation albums have been dedicated to exploring the interplay between Ambient music and sleep. Each volume gathers a diverse range of artists from around the world, who are invited to craft a piece of music which provides either a sense of calm or a subdued, minimal aesthetic.

Building on its four predecessors, Sleeplaboratory5.0 introduces a range of Ambient styles, from cinematic orchestral tones to hushed drones, delicate guitar passages, fractured piano notes, and deep bass textures. This edition welcomes back label previous label contributors such as Henrik Meierkord, Feeling Flying, The Bird’s Companion, Knivtid, and Calm Pieces. Their work is interwoven with contributions from new names to Whitelabrecs, offering a glimpse of potential future collaborations and releases.

As with all Whitelabrecs releases, the physical edition of Sleeplaboratory5.0 will feature companion artwork where the photographer had the same brief, to create something around the theme of sleep. This time, George Korunov’s evocative visuals adorn the four-panel sleeve, continuing our creative partnership. The deep blue and purple hues of these abstract images are suitably dreamlike, suggestive of clouds, of forest and of hard to place memories. The album is designed for versatile listening experiences, whether played quietly on headphones at night, softly through speakers in a dimly lit room, or as a soothing background companion to your day. The Sleeplaboratory series taps into the restorative qualities of both sleep and Ambient music.

Belgian ambient artist First Snow of The Year returns to Whitelabrecs with Hibernation, his third release on the label. Recorded between late 2023 and early 2024, the album reflects a period of creative retreat and quiet transformation. As the world outside moved through its seasons, the artist found himself in a state of hibernation.

Erik tells us “There was a stretch where my energy was low, and I spent more time at home, adjusting to life with a one-year-old daughter. It felt like hibernating”. Over time, that stillness gave way to renewal, and these recordings capture the feeling of re-emerging with a new perspective.

The album blends digital and analog elements, combining field recordings, experimental pedal loops, and mic-captured textures. It moves between expansive drone-like pieces (Hibernation, St Wendel) and more structured compositions (Postcards, Sail), with brief interludes in between providing moments of pause. Without a strict concept, the record flows naturally, weaving together different sounds into a cohesive and organic patchwork of textures and moments,

For the first time, First Snow of The Year worked with an external mixing engineer, allowing him to focus fully on the creative process. This shift helped shape an album that feels personal yet open-ended, inviting listeners to experience its unfolding journey in their own way.

With Hibernation, First Snow of The Year presents an album about transition and renewal, born from winter’s quiet and released just as spring begins.

In a world where the sky is choked with ash and the ruins of civilization stretch endlessly, The Last Shelter stands as a monolithic relic of a forgotten era. A floating fortress of cold concrete and flickering lights, it offers the illusion of safety amid the desolation.

This dark ambient soundscape plunges you into the depths of an abandoned dystopia, where distant drones, ghostly echoes, and industrial whispers paint a portrait of solitude and survival. It is a descent into the unknown, through rusted corridors, beneath the hum of unseen machines, and into the heart of an uncertain refuge.

Inspired by the cinematic depth of @Vangelis, the mystical layers of @Enigma, and the emotional intensity of @Hans Zimmer, NoiseTextures is a space for sonic exploration — a meditation through tone, texture, and atmosphere.
