For the second year in a row, Be Your Own Studio Label presents Be Vol.2, its annual VA album that tries to reflect universal life experiences through the vision of a refined selection of artists. 
After a few years of pandemic, lockdowns and uncertainty, this year theme was 'flourish', life  return, the resurgence.

This year's roster brings us artist from Spain (Gleezy, Idriss Reina, Nau Leone), England (ARVØW) and Belgium (Pjets ft. Elle a L’aura).
From the quietest ambient to the most danceable electronica. 5 artists and 5 songs that show us the great versatility behind this record label.

Gleezy opens up the album with Scarlet Sky, a track that immerses you and makes you fly in equal parts, ambient, beautiful melodies and a drop that will not leave you indifferent.
British artist ARVØW continues with Detox, an uplifting synth sequence meshed with hard hitting drums made to create a feeling of euphoria and revitalisation in oneself. 
The third track is signed by Nau Leone and brings a clear message: Everything Will Bloom Again. A kind song that progresses and evolves until it explodes in a final celebration.
Malaga based young producer Idriss Reina debuts on the label with Proceso, a song that gives us tension, a lot of groove, percussion, synthesizers, progression and a mastery of breaks and rhythm changes.
The album concludes with the great collaboration between Pjets and Elle a L'aura, and their track Wonder Why. An epic song with touches of ambient and drum'n bass. Full of synthesizers and a magnificent voice from Elle a L'aura.

For this 166th Premiere of 2023, we have a track by veteran UK Electro producer, now based in France, Carl Finlow, aka "Silicon Scally", titled ‘Super Fluid Tones’ from his forthcoming EP "Soft Robotics" on the independent British record label, founded in Sheffield in 2012, specialising in electronic music : Central Processing Unit (@cpurecords).

Silicon Scally - Soft Robotics [Central Processing Unit]

Carl Finlow keeps on keepin’ on. Not only is Finlow one of the most respected names in electro, a producer who boasts a sprawling catalogue that takes in a wide variety of aliases, but he’s also spent recent years establishing himself as a mainstay for Sheffield’s Central Processing Unit label. Soft Robotics, the new EP from Finlow’s Silicon Scally project, is the fifth Silicon Scally release in five years to boast one of CPU’s instantly-recognisable black-and-white covers.

The reason that Silicon Scally and CPU keep linking up is simple; they’re a perfect fit for one another. Central Processing Unit has established itself as a haven for post-Drexciya producers since launching in 2012, and there are few artists better than Finlow at building on the Detroit group’s sound. The union bears fruit once more on Soft Robotics, an EP of lithe machine-funk jams that will both do damage in the dance and also reward more concentrated home listening.

Things begin at a steadier speed than one might expect. Rather than barrelling off with the kind of sinewy roller one associates with the CPU name, Soft Robotics’ title-track takes things at mid-pace. The groove reveals itself without hurry, Silicon Scally adding or subtracting elements - twitchy modular loops, pensive pads, the occasional blurt of low-end - atop the chugging bass/drums groove. It’s a track which wins you over with guile rather than force.

Things limber up further still on first B-side ‘Spin Ratio’. The track’s 808 kicks are punchier than those of the A-side jams, and there’s a dizziness to the bass tone which gives ‘Spin Ratio’ an intriguingly off-kilter feel. Atop the booming beat we find ourselves hypnotised by cells of melody and harmony interlocking or moving apart - particularly the staccato module at the track’s heart. Sure enough, ‘Spin Ratio’ is the Soft Robotics joint which cleaves closest to Drexciya, invoking other Detroit disciples like Jensen Interceptor in the process.

After Soft Robotics picks up speed in the middle, closer ‘Super Fluid Tones’ brings us back to where we started. This track returns to the more measured delivery of the record’s opener - there’s a steady pulse to the drums, and once again Silicon Scally packs the mix with so many intriguing whizzes, bangs, blips and blurts that it’s impossible not be won over by this tune’s construction. ‘Soft Robotics’ and ‘Super Fluid Tones’ bookend Soft Robotics very nicely, and Silicon Scally’s smart pacing gives the EP a lovely ebb and flow.

The ever-excellent Carl Finlow drops a Silicon Scally release via Central Processing Unit for the fifth year running. Like its predecessors, Soft Robotics is an excellent and deftly-crafted collection of modern machine-funk.

Parule taps in with a five-track EP that explores different tempos and ventures into new sonic territories while maintaining some of his signature elements.

Stoned Squirrel opens the EP with a slow, head-nodding groove driven by a filtered acid hook and rattling percussions.

Off Shore follows as a stripped-back roller, evoking a hypnotic, submerged atmosphere.
Chants nods to Parule’s earlier work—fast-paced electro that dances between breakbeats and squelching acid lines.

Laufbahn is stripped down, raw and agonizing. Like running in circles with a broken foot.
Fujiyama pushes into the 160 BPM realm, weaving in lyrics and vocal textures from ŽEN's "Lov na crne tipke", a track Parule obsessed over throughout the past year.

Tahtib is food for your mystical post-exotica musical landscape - hand drums played by computers fall with a squelch into the swamp, horses neigh at dub bassists, there’s water everywhere full of urchins and tarot cards and just when you think you need to breathe this record breathes for you. Tahtib’s future ambient glyphs are matched with the rapid-fire staccato "taks” of imaginary tahtib sticks (tahtib is an Upper Egyptian martial art which was enjoyed and practiced by Leila's grandfather Baba Aly). Leila Hassan sings seamlessly between Arabic and Italian (and possibly more) breathing pure soundart alchemy across Francesco Cavaliere’s library of sound effects and textures. 

You remember Sea Urchin? They added their signature aquatics to Osaka-native 7FO’s 7” for Bokeh back in 2017. The duo of Leila Hassan and Francesco Cavaliere debuted a totally unique expression of ‘library music as future music’ on a series of small run cassettes before their proper debut LP Yaqaza was released on legendary Belgian imprint Kraak (Pan American, Limpe Fuchs, Typhonian Highlife). This caught the ear of Bokeh designer svengali Patrick Savile, who adds his vision to the LP cover. Francesco has also released solo explorations on Hundebiss (Kelman Duran, Lil Ugly Mane) and Edições Cn (Dolphins Into The Future).
