Who is Nick Lowe, you ask?  Unless you're the type of music fan who reads liner notes, you may not be aware of his influence and stature.  He is the legendary pub rocker formerly of Rockpile. He's also:

-  The producer of the first 5, classic, Elvis Costello albums.
-  The composer of Costello's signature song "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace Love And Understanding". 
- The producer of The Pretenders' single "Stop Your Sobbing".
-  The producer of The Damned's first album.  

"Cruel To Be Kind" is Mr. Lowe's best known U.S hit and definitely a classic song in every way.

Barely making it in time for the festive season, The Big Nowhere present for your aural libation their ‘Christmas In the Gutter’ EP.

Like some kind of Laudanum tincture, the ‘Christmas In The Gutter’ EP is laced through with love, loss and regret. However, despite being champions of the melancholic and the dispirited, The Big Nowhere also shed their tristful and wistful jackets and step into the noontide light to let us join them in the raptures and revelries of the band’s recording of the Big Star classic ‘I’m In Love With A Girl’. They love us so.

In the six tracks contained within, the ‘Christmas In The Gutter’ EP travels wide and far in it’s scope – the haunting tale of a death on Christmas Eve of ‘Christmas In The Gutter’; the twisted space-folk of ‘The Hole Where The Rain Gets In’; the dark, foreboding carnivale atmosphere of the instrumental ‘Junk Band (The Big Nowhere)’; the bawdy and licentious sea-shanty of closer ‘To The End Of The World’ (a word of warning here, gentle listener – the lyrical content of this song means it it definitely not to played in the presence of the faint-of-heart or strict of morals. 

The EP is a precursor to their eagerly  awaited and long, long overdue second album ‘Don’t Burn The Fortune’ as they work towards a Spring release. Though at this moment in time no-one can be certain of which year, 2012 would be worthy of an each-way wager at your favourite hostelry, shoe-shine stand or whomever may be willing to take a flier in whichever dank and roriferous alleyway you wake up in after a night with a companion of easy virtue.

Widely considered to be the “Barbara Streisand of Japan”, Saori Yuki released her debut album in Japan in 1969 and has gone on to make over 30 albums in her 42 year-career. Yuki discovered Pink Martini after the band covered her song “Taya Tan” for their 2007 album Hey Eugene! Most recently, Yuki sang a verse of “White Christmas” in Japanese for the band’s hit 2010 holiday album Joy To The World.

In honor of the year of her debut release, Saori Yuki partnered with Pink Martini and producer Thomas M. Lauderdale to create a loving tribute to the music released in 1969. Featuring Japanese pop hits alongside internationally recognized tunes like Jorge Ben’s “Mas que nada” and “Puff the Magic Dragon”, “1969″ is a brilliant collaboration, with Thomas M. Lauderdale’s magical arrangements, Pink Martini’s stellar musicianship, and Saori Yuki’s soaring vocals.

GOING LEFT RIGHT and I WANT…DEPARTMENT S have been rampaging across the UK and Europe thrilling audiences with their guitar based sound from Wickerman in Scotland to Benicassim in Spain. With 4 original members, Mike Herbage, Stuart Mizon, Mark Taylor and Eddie Roxy joined by Back To Zero’s Sam Burnett giving the group a unique sound with two lead guitarists. Since 2006 three singles have been released, Wonderful Day, God Squad Saviour and My Coo Ca Choo with guest musicians such as Glenn Matlock, Marco Perroni, Mark Bedford and John Keeble. A new LP released last year “MR NUTLEY’S STRANGE DELUSSIONARIUM” was greeting by warm reviews and represents the more rock sound the band believe would have immerged had VIC producers(Buffin and Overend from Mott The Hoople) been allowed to produce the debut LP…….sadly the label wanted a more commercial sound and then went bust after the record was finished but before it was released thus the first Department S album was released 10 years after it was made!!!  2013 will see a new LP “The Constructavist’s Nightmare” and the band back on the road playing clubs and festivals.
