Armajet is a game with its roots in 90’s twitch shooters. Hardcore, unforgiving, instant, inhuman.
The match with our music was obvious. We didn’t have to work out much about what it needed to sound like.
The music we made for it isn’t purely about Armajet itself, though. A lot of other elements come through: the frustration over our breaking up, my personal attachment to to 90/00’s twitch shooter genre (UT99 specifically), the 90’s trance sound of detuned saw arps, and the developing 3D game graphics of the time: futuristic, unnatural and new.
The music reflects these 90’s gamer kicks; seeking the maximum challenge, speed, reflexes, resolution, framerate, information density, eyes wide open from energy drinks, falling asleep on your keyboard at a LAN party. How fast can my brain go, how much can I take. What has now arguably become a chronic disease for everyone with a smartphone back then was the rush we were after. Nailing that impossible shock combo or headshot in a flow state, watching each other discover seemingly inhuman levels of mastery in a different reality. The digital frontier.

In June Thijs was over at Amon Tobin’s place in LA for a studio session. This is one of the tracks that came out of that session, it was pretty much completely done in 3 days. It was made in a dark place, infused with love for 808 electro, breakbeats, old crusty synthesisers and samplers, alternate tuning scales, and Mezcal & Tonic on the rocks.

The Ascent (Armajet Main Theme)

Noisia’s ‘Armajet OST’ contains the first recordings to be released from legendary Dutch drum & bass trio in what will be their final year. In September 2019, Noisia aka Nik Roos, Martijn van Sonderen, and Thijs de Vlieger announced that the group would split at the end of 2020. We’re now at the beginning of that end, the final chapter in a 20 year career that has seen Noisia break new ground for drum & bass, and become one of the most respected outfits in electronic music.

‘Armajet OST’ combines two of their greatest shared loves, sound design and gaming. The trio have returned to this space to produce 5 tracks that form the Armajet original soundtrack, creating 16 minutes and 56 seconds of brand new music: The Ascent, Decloak, Hardskin, Vaporized, and Wallhack.

Released in-game as well as via their record label Vision, ‘Armajet OST’ is available on all DSPs from 24 January. Nik, Martijn, and Thijs grew up as gamers. Their vision for the album was born of their love for old school PC games, the same inspiration for the developers at Super Bit Machine who created Armajet. The release of the new soundtrack is in conjunction with a brand new performance update for the Armajet client that lowers the download requirement to less than 20% of its previous size. This should allow the new music and the game to wind up in the hands of even more mobile and PC gamers.
