A debut after just two short digi EPs is a brave move, but a 160-minutes-2CDs-29-tracks-package of collaborations and remixes seems an outright daredevil venture: The Norwegian producer behind this goes by the name of Ragnarok, which is Norse mythology’s version of the apocalypse. And surely, if you are obsessed with micro genres and like to put music into drawers, this album will be the end of the world for you. Not just genre-defying, this is rather genre-shattering! But then, what can you expect with collaborators and remixers as diverse as Cemon Victa and Xaero, The Peoples Republic of Europe and Jensen? Encounter any sound from main stage melodic (check the How Hard remix) to terror tempo (Kubrick & Dronekiller do the job), from straight beats of all speeds to crossbreed taste (courtesy of Nu-Phase) – and lots of industrial leanings in between. And “Individualism By Default” goes even further than just fathoming the outskirts of hardcore, it goes beyond: A cinemascope, slightly dark pop tune featuring the haunting female vocal performance of Marina Borodina, an industrial metal track with grunted vocals featuring Vague Entity, an excursion into ragga core with Stolen Cult and Ars Dada… and the quest for individualism goes on and on. It’s all in splendid production quality, a full-blown attack of darkness, melody, catchiness, experimentalism, doom, and beats, beats and more beats.
“Individualism By Default” is a tribute to individualism truly, and a congregation of artists who are diverse in style, but connected by attitude, the entire thing conducted by Ragnarok. Let’s thank the Norse gods he dared to!
