This year's Best of Bootie Mashup feels a bit more special than previous years, mostly because when I look at the producers here, I realize that not only have these people done superlative mashup work in 2021, but most of them are also active participants in our global-yet-still-small mashup scene. 

They aren't just producing tracks in a bubble, trying to get hits with the YouTube or TikTok algorithm. They are collaborating and sharing their love of mashup culture, not with just the world, but with each other, creating a strong sense of community. Whether it be in the ChatPod of our Twitch channel, in the Crumplbangers Discord, or on other social media channels, I haven't felt this sense of kinship with my fellow mashup creators since the early ’00s days of the GYBO message board.

So it's with great excitement that we present this year's collection of mashups of some of the biggest hits of 2021, curated by myself, Jupiter Gatling, and DJ Tyme, with input from some of the other DJs on the Bootie Mashup team, as well from the BootieMashup Twitch ChatPod – in particular, the "mashup roundtable" who participate in my Mashup Listening Party livestream every Wednesday.

As I embark on my second marathon, I intend to go back into the pain cave. To feel the aching desire to push yourself, to see what is beyond the horizon, and to feel all waves the emotions. This is my tribute to the one and only Pumpkin. He inspired me, one late summer afternoon, when I stumbled upon his live set at LIB in 2012. From then on, I made sure to catch every live show of his that I possibly could & every damn time the energy I felt on the dance floor was better than any other dance floor. It was always packed with many, many smiling faces full of new & old friends, brought together. History in the making - I knew right then and there that this is what it was all about. After hearing of his tragic passing in 2016, I felt a strong calling to carry on the duty of spreading love on the dance floor. It was at that point, when I started taking DJing more seriously on a more public scale. So this is for you, the fans, the ones who never got to know who he was, and Nick the Neck, up there in the sky, dancing in paradise. 🌰

Thirty five years of professional DJing this summer! 

I have spent many past posts musing about the early days, so I will spare you words of nostalgia today. Instead, I want to hit you with the kind of set that I feel is an accumulation of my past experiences of what works on a dance floor, what I personally love, and which of those sounds I feel connect with what's happening today. 

Music has largely stopped giving us anything truly new in the past decade, but the absence of newness doesn't mean we shouldn't discover music that is new to US, and sometimes we should also remind ourselves of the great eras, genres and grooves we may have forgotten. So today, instead of giving you newness, I present to you my musical opinion on contemporary timelessness.

I would personally dance my ass off to this set. LMK if you would too.

I really didn't think I'd be DJing again this much after having quite a bit of trouble with my health over the past seven years. BUT, back in December, I seemingly climbed out of a dark hole and have been playing pretty much non-stop every weekend since, culminating in this last EPIC weekend at *Wicked Woods Music Festival! What a beautiful way to not only end the summer, but also mark a beautiful return to the music festival scene. Wicked Woods is held in Fairmont Hot Springs in the Columbia Valley, which is actually where it all began for me back in the late '90s. [Golden, BC]

I decided to move to Vancouver Island in 2009, and yes, I’ve been back to play, but the last time I was in the Columbia Valley was in 2017!

It was so incredibly amazing to see SO MANY buddies at this event. It felt like a real homecoming! I am forever grateful to Tracy Mihajic and Murphy for believing in me and supporting me to show up and rock a two-hour Monday morning set at The Unicorn Lounge! I had the best time! Watching the sun come over the mountains and shine on everyone's faces was such a treat. Thank you to everyone who showed up and shared the Love! I had so many friends surrounding me, it felt like a dream.

And, I am always so grateful for the ongoing love and support of my wicked husband, Tony. I likely wouldn't have been able to make it, if not for him. We really needed this too! We had a blast frolicking in the WOODS!

This set is also dedicated our sweet little Ivan The Cuddler (our beloved Cat of 14 years) who sadly passed on the same day that I played. We'll miss you buddy, your love will always live on in our hearts!

I hope you enjoy listening to this set as much as I loved dj'ing it! Huge props to all the producers who work tirelessly to make such great music!
