Two days later they descended to the luminous plain where the joyful town of Valledupar was located. There were cockfights in the patios, accordion music on the street corners, riders on thoroughbred horses, rockets and bells. A pyrotechnical castle was being assembled. Fermina Daza did not even notice the festivities. They stayed in the home of Uncle Lisímaco Sánchez, her mother’s brother, who had come out to receive them on the King’s Highway at the head of a noisy troop of young relatives riding the best-bred horses in the entire province, and they were led through the streets of the town to the accompaniment of exploding fireworks. The house was on the Grand Plaza, next to the colonial church that had been repaired several times, and it seemed more like the main house on a hacienda because of its large, somber rooms and its gallery that faced an orchard of fruit trees and smelled of hot sugarcane juice.

My mind and my knowledge of myself is formed by the victories that are the jewels in our African crown, the victories we earned from Isandhlwana to Khartoum, as Ethiopians and as the Ashanti of Ghana, as the Berbers of the desert. I am the grandchild who lays fresh flowers on the Boer graves at St Helena and the Bahamas, who sees in the mind's eye and suffers the suffering of a simple peasant folk, death, concentration camps, destroyed homesteads, a dream in ruins. I am the child of Nongqause. I am he who made it possible to trade in the world markets in diamonds, in gold, in the same food for which my stomach yearns. I come of those who were transported from India and China, whose being resided in the fact, solely, that they were able to provide physical labour, who taught me that we could both be at home and be foreign, who taught me that human existence itself demanded that freedom was a necessary condition for that human existence. I'm An African.

A fresh new take on traditional Gnawa music that honors the soul of the sound, this remix of Innov Gnawa's "Bangara" is not your typical Western remix of African music.

A chance encounter with a Touareg dancer in 2013 led Greek producer AkizzBeatzz to discover the music of North Africa, sparking his passion for Gnawa (a pan-African Sufi ritualistic trance tradition that arose from the shadows of slavery in Morocco), which he has continued to study and explore since. 

When AkizzBeatzz came across Remix ←→ Culture's unique Gnawa recordings and remixable sonic offerings (remix-culture.org/innov-gnawa), he jumped at the invitation to download (for free) and remix our high-quality samples. Taqadam’s three stretches of relaxed and evocative songs explore the restorative power of music on the mind. Inspired by North African harmonies, the EP’s vibrations orbit around a peculiar tale, one of healing and resolutions.

Losing faith in his world, a young boy turned to dreams for answers those wiser than him never found. In them he roamed the desert, always a different one.

The desert conjured a man before him, a storyteller of the region’s Gnawa history. The boy voiced the problems dancing on the surface of his thoughts. The man had no answer for him, only the melodies of a guembri. They were enough. Morning brought relief and a new chapter.

The city conjured a woman before him, the fabrics of her dress vanishing behind corners as they wandered. Her smell was magnetic. One day he worked up the courage to ask her what it could be. ‘Jasmin’, she answered.

The boy went back to where it started, this time awake and in the sweetest of companies. When he plucked the guembri strings, they echoed throughout the desert.

Imagine two sides of a starry, winding road. On the left, the thumping noises of a city at night. On the right, folk songs dance with desert winds. NOMÅGIK’s music stands at the middle, on this pulsing path where sand meets pavement, where Bedouin and Gnawa rhythms fuse with resolutely electronic aromas. 

Several years ago, NOMÅGIK was riding a train that broke down for a few hours. He found himself next to a magnetic and talkative Tuareg elder woman. After 3 hours of passionate conversations about music, he went home to listen to her recommendations. In them, he found his frequencies. This connection that would redefine his music.

Born in Greece and bred in Munich, NOMÅGIK is a sonic traveler shaping his world with curiosity. A multicultural music producer since the age of 15, he’s opened up his urban sound, fed by electronic music and Hiphop, to welcome North African rhythms. The result is a borderless blend between electronica and folk, bringing the slowly building euphoria of desert traditional sounds to the dance-floor. Every track has a story behind it; part of it can be read in NOMÅGIK’s collage cover arts. The rest is ready to be told to the curious mind who asks.
