"disquiet" is a good name aye cuz dis is real quiet

This week's Disquiet Junto assignment was to do a Pig Latin version of an existing piece of music. I decided to try something with my track Ottomans off my 2018 album 'Everything Happens, For Some Reason'. Original track is here: https://soundcloud.com/nonwrestler/jet-jaguar-ottomans

'Ottomans' is in polymeter - the different instrumental parts are in different time signatures. I wanted to work with something using polymeter because in Pig Latin it's not like you force the "ay" syllable in at regular time intervals - you do it according to the length of the word. 

So I decided to play an A at the end of very bar of the existing phrases, pushing out the original time signature of each phrase. I had to push the whole track down a semitone to make this in key. 

Then, say the original phrase was 4 bars of 4/4, I turned it into 4 bars of 5/4. with an A playing on the 5th beat of every bar. For the original 4 beats I reshuffled them like you would with Pig Latin, so instead of going 1 2 3 4 A, it goes 2 3 4 1 A. I followed the same kind of idea always inserting an A for a crotchet length at the end of each bar, e.g. turning bars of 7/8 into 9/8 and so on.

I made basically no changes to the arrangement of the original track, like when things fade in and out, but the different length phrases change things quite a bit to my ears.

The Dying Miss Saeki (Den döende fröken Saeki) is the fourth and last movement in From the Bottom of a Well (Från botten av en brunn) based on Haruki Murakami's novel Kafka on the Shore. The the sounds were designed from, and the music was written from a grounded theory analysis of the book. The piece was performed and recorded on the 16th of December 2021 by Robert Ek, clarinet; Kevin Kirs Verstege, cello; and Rikard Vilhelm Lindell, eurorack at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. "I was completely enthralled by Andreas', Roland's, and Wilfried's musical 'answer' to the last Junto assignment (0593 -- a trio recorded at 'asynchronous' times and places). I lovingly dissected their sonic opus, and concocted My own answer to this week's Junto challenge -- 0594, the 'Threemix.'

I first diced the intro of Andreas' initial, guitar loop, kept only its first two 'notes,' expanded and looped them to 64.35 BPM -- and repeated them throughout the piece.

encym's guitar meanderings were sliced into brief phrases. I ended up with thirty of them, yet used only two of them to offset Andreas' forceful drones. Also featured are two improv sections of His at very low volumes, in order to suggest an subtle 'undulation' in the piece.

encym's tonality was originally pitched one semitone higher ('Western-scale'); thus, I lowered (pitch-shifted) it a single semitone. The result is consonance.

(One of My fave 'happy accidents' occured while isolating a brief, percussive 'dink' during encym's guitar part [a fingering error?]; that dink -- when saturated, and run through a slap-back and ping-pong delay series -- provided a 'drum' beat that backed the piece.)

As the work nears its cadence, enter Wilfried, with His wond'rous 'theremin' riff, of which I isolated one recorded flourish, and repeated it four times. The motif He played introduces itself at a low volume level, fed through two delays and a reverb, which deepened in intensities as the motifs progressed. 

What makes this piece special for Me is the highly complex -- and joyfully painstaking -- effects automations I crafted throughout it. It took hours of mathematical computations, and programming, in order to make the piece -- itself seemingly 'simple' and 'droney' -- to 'sound' so complex."

Disquiet Junto Project 0600: Reaching Out

Part of the beauty of a shared sample project is that there will be an underlying quality — a tonality, a texture, a commonality — to all the disparate works that are produced from the foundational material. I've had this idea for a long time: turning slowly evolving drones and textures into percussion and pusles and compose around that.

When I listened to the source material, I knew what I wanted to do.

**The process**
I placed all sounds on separate DAW tracks and listened to them. 
I used sends to create 3 different "submixes" that I liked. I recorded these 3 sounds and worked with them, disregarding the other material. 

Then, I processed these 3 voices with Eurorack envelopes and VCAs, coming up with a trigger sequence, envelope timing, levels and EQ that I liked. I spent around an hour on it.

I grouped together all 3 voices and added some space with tape delay and a bit of reverb. Then, I added a fourth sound layer of the metallic stereo percussion, which already had a great reverberation to it, so I put it outside of the group to add a second layer of depth to the overall space of the piece.

I recorded 10 minutes of the resulting material to the DAW (mono).

Then I closed my eyes and recorded volume automation with a MIDI fader controller for the four tracks to introduce the sounds and fade them away, giving the composition its final shape.

Reaching Out [disquiet0600]

Live iPad jam around 3 samples by Marcus Fischer. The main theme is from manipulating one of the samples in Sector. Outside of these three sources there's one track of softpop, and multiple tracks of effects.

My creative goal with this one was to slow down.
