Disquiet Junto sets you assignments to complete in a weekend, and dares you to upload stuff you might not otherwise. It's fun and a great motivator - experimental, in the sense of trying new things, rather than in the sense of making a whole lot of noise like they did in the 60s and thinking you're smart.

Disquiet Junto contributions

This week's Disquiet Junto assignment was to do a Pig Latin version of an existing piece of music. I decided to try something with my track Ottomans off my 2018 album 'Everything Happens, For Some Reason'. Original track is here: https://soundcloud.com/nonwrestler/jet-jaguar-ottomans

'Ottomans' is in polymeter - the different instrumental parts are in different time signatures. I wanted to work with something using polymeter because in Pig Latin it's not like you force the "ay" syllable in at regular time intervals - you do it according to the length of the word. 

So I decided to play an A at the end of very bar of the existing phrases, pushing out the original time signature of each phrase. I had to push the whole track down a semitone to make this in key. 

Then, say the original phrase was 4 bars of 4/4, I turned it into 4 bars of 5/4. with an A playing on the 5th beat of every bar. For the original 4 beats I reshuffled them like you would with Pig Latin, so instead of going 1 2 3 4 A, it goes 2 3 4 1 A. I followed the same kind of idea always inserting an A for a crotchet length at the end of each bar, e.g. turning bars of 7/8 into 9/8 and so on.

I made basically no changes to the arrangement of the original track, like when things fade in and out, but the different length phrases change things quite a bit to my ears.

This is my latest contribution to the Disquiet Junto. The assignment this week was to use the speech about how magic works from The Prestige as inspiration. So the track had to go from part A to part B and back to A. 

I felt like "B" needed to be some kind of trick, not just like verse/chorus/verse. I hope you can figure out what the trick is and, either way, enjoy.

For the Disquiet Junto this week, I chose the option to "Record what you imagine it would sound like to attend a club event of 10BPM techno, including crowd noise."

I wrote a sequence at a normal-ish techno tempo, then slowed down the master tempo in my DAW to 10bpm. Techno typically evolves slowly, in blocks of 16 or so bars, and while I didn't quite stick to that, I thought it wouldn't feel really like it was 10bpm if I messed with the structure. So I decided to focus my efforts on making it sound at least a bit like being in a club.

I used convolution to feed the whole mix through a night club's PA,  using these free impulse responses. http://www.balancemastering.com/blog/free-funktion-one-impulse-responses-ir-irs-convolution/

I mixed the music with a couple of crowd / bar noise recordings from freesound.

Jet Jaguar - Slow Night [disquiet0541]

This week's Disquiet Junto was to make a drone using only your voice. 

This is just a snippet of me talking in a work context, a meeting recording. I thought using spoken-word from the least musical context was a good laugh - something about droning on in meetings, the New Zillund accent, my accent specifically, something...

Then all I did was send the recording into a convolution reverb, using a 45 second impulse response from a disused radar dome in Germany. Thank you Antony for the recording!

I chopped the front 50 seconds off the recording, so it starts when the convolution is already going nuts and that's it. I was pleasantly surprised by the many layers from this single effect.

Jet Jaguar - Online Meeting In a Radar Dome [disquiet0548]

The one instruction for this week's Disquiet Junto assignment was to use an octave leap, which is something I quite often do anyway. 

So, I just set about writing a new track without thinking too hard about the brief. I actually started with the percussion that shows up later in the track.

The root on the opening part steps down an octave before introducing the next chord in the progression.

A two-note synth part is just the minor 7 on two octaves (with a major 6 once for colour - still fits the Dorian mode but is pretty HELLO when it shows up imo).

A second synth part doubles the guitar harmonic sounds, coming in via an opening low-pass filter. That synth part has its pitch modulated by a little step sequence, so it steps up one or two octaves, and the rate at which that's happening in shifting about. That part then runs into a delay (Valhalla Delay) which as a descending octave shift in the feedback patch.

A synth bass part arrives later that is just sustained notes following the root of each chord, but an arpeggiator steps up and down an octave. Kind of like with the pitch modulation on the other synth, the tempo of the arpeggiator is being modulated by an LFO, then quantised, to make it less synth disco / Girls & Boys.

This week's Disquiet Junto assignment is to make music that moves between 5/8, 6/8 and 7/8. The main phrase of this is 2 bars of each. 

The opening synth and the claps are doing something different. 

The first synth plays 5 bars of 5/8, then 5 of 6/8, then 5 of 7/8, back down to 6/8, back down to 5/8, and repeat...

The claps are constant polymeters - three patterns, one in each time signature, happening at the same time.

This week's Disquiet Junto project is to use the rhythm of rain in a pipe as the foundation for a piece of music. I piped (hoho) the audio into three frequency bands and trigger a different synth note when each band gets over a certain volume. The lowest frequency band is the lowest synth note and so on. I followed the instructions that you can find at the link below, using a squelchy synth lead sound... ("Create a pattern, loop it, and intersperse alterations.") 

I liked the fact the instructions were ambiguous about whether additional notes should change the length of the phrase or not. I decided in my case I'd let them change the length.

But I'll admit I got a bit bored and threw in an overly-compressed 808 rhythm in 5 4. Oops.

[junto 0281] Pattern Interruption

This week's assignment was to make gentle music using one sound source, a 90-minute recording of someone playing clay bowls.

As a bit of a reaction to the massive length of the recording, I decided to drill into tiny sections and make something pretty tightly rhythmic and dry sounding. 

Mostly I then just layered up those bits that I found looped nicely and faded them in and out. There's some high crackly sounds which were the result of EQing some background noises from the recording to bring out the high bits, then feeding that stuff through a delay.

As a last step, I dragged down the tempo of the final piece by about 15 bpm and found it worked better like that. :)

[junto 0284] Creative Commonfield

This week's assignment is to pay tribute to the Roland 303 by doing something that is apart from how you think it was intended to be utilised.

The 303 was originally supposed to be an accompaniment for like lounge bar solo musicians. Tweaking the knobs live to make the classic acid sound was already creative misuse...

I decided I'd use 303s to focus on melody and harmony, and try and stay away from the acid sound or anything that sounded too like a bassline. I also decided to use some polymeter (different parts layered in different time signatures) and a gradual tempo change to undermine the basic 4 4 rhythm.

I did want to use some of the classic characteristics of the 303, still, otherwise it seemed a bit pointless if it was entirely unrecognisable to even the most hardcore nerds. So I did use the pitch glide and also tweaked the (virtual) knobs a bit.

I used four copies of a software 303 emulator called AudioRealism ABL-3. 
Three form sparse chords, with the polymeter creating variations. The fourth plays the melody in 4 4.

Then there's just some drums (also in 4 4) and some effects and that's it.

This week's Disquiet Junto was to explore musical palindromes. 

I thought about trying to make harmonic palindromes, like chords that reflect on themselves, but it's not really how my music brain works. So I focused on stuff happening over time. 

The main structure of the track is a palindrome - when things fade in and out, etc. and when chords and melodic bits play.
The bassline is a palindrome, and has a palindromic thing happening with the attack and decay on the envelope shifting in mirror image.
The chord progession is a palindrome.
Each drum part is a palindrome, some of which would line up perfectly if you notated the whole track out and flipped it down the middle, some of which don't work like that, but each loop does mirror down the middle, e.g. the kick drum is 4 bars of 5/4 while the main structure flips around 9 bars of 5/4.
There's a plinky palindrome melody which also has a reversed reverb for the first half of the track and then a normal reverb for the second half.

This week's Disquiet Junto assignment was to layer 3 variations of a melody on top of each other.

I played something kinda random on a kalimba, then edited the timing of the results three times so they're all playing the same notes in the same order, but one is 15 bars, one is 14 bars, and the third is 13 bars long.

There's a kind of bass pulse made by doing a sample-and-hold thing on the first beat of every four, pitched down.

[junto 0352] Layering Permutations

Jet Jaguar - Shoddy Kalimba Loops [disquiet0352] (free download)

This week's assignment was to take the most famous of Satie's Gymnopédies and rework it in a genre of your choosing. I went with dub techno in the style of Rhythm & Sound.

My process was simple: I found a midi file online that split the piece into left- and right-hand piano parts. I chucked that into Reaper and played each part back on different synths. Lots of delay fx and saturation. Tape drum machine sounds from Goldbaby. It probably took an hour at most.

I played it slow and let the bass sit on its own at the start and near the middle, but otherwise the score is intact (assuming whoever created the MIDI didn't do anything weird, but I can't pick it if they did).

This weekend's assignment was to make something that's not using the standard A = 440 Hz, equal temperament tuning. In the Disquiet Slack workspace, someone shared a tuning used by Terry Riley on his album Shri Camel. I took that and used Bitwig's built in micro-pitch functions to tune some synths to that. To my shoddy ears the tuning is pretty subtle! Maybe not to yours.

Jet Jaguar - Quietude [disquiet0440]

This is just two field recordings layered on top of each other. A few fades on one of them, otherwise absolutely no effects or processing. I'm curious if it's at all obvious what's going on! One recording was made in Vanuatu, September 2015, the other in New Zealand, a month later. But it might be most interesting to not know anything more than that.
