Disquiet Junto sets you assignments to complete in a weekend, and dares you to upload stuff you might not otherwise. It's fun and a great motivator - experimental, in the sense of trying new things, rather than in the sense of making a whole lot of noise like they did in the 60s and thinking you're smart.

Disquiet Junto contributions

The one instruction for this week's Disquiet Junto assignment was to use an octave leap, which is something I quite often do anyway. 

So, I just set about writing a new track without thinking too hard about the brief. I actually started with the percussion that shows up later in the track.

The root on the opening part steps down an octave before introducing the next chord in the progression.

A two-note synth part is just the minor 7 on two octaves (with a major 6 once for colour - still fits the Dorian mode but is pretty HELLO when it shows up imo).

A second synth part doubles the guitar harmonic sounds, coming in via an opening low-pass filter. That synth part has its pitch modulated by a little step sequence, so it steps up one or two octaves, and the rate at which that's happening in shifting about. That part then runs into a delay (Valhalla Delay) which as a descending octave shift in the feedback patch.

A synth bass part arrives later that is just sustained notes following the root of each chord, but an arpeggiator steps up and down an octave. Kind of like with the pitch modulation on the other synth, the tempo of the arpeggiator is being modulated by an LFO, then quantised, to make it less synth disco / Girls & Boys.

This week's Disquiet Junto assignment is to make music that moves between 5/8, 6/8 and 7/8. The main phrase of this is 2 bars of each. 

The opening synth and the claps are doing something different. 

The first synth plays 5 bars of 5/8, then 5 of 6/8, then 5 of 7/8, back down to 6/8, back down to 5/8, and repeat...

The claps are constant polymeters - three patterns, one in each time signature, happening at the same time.

This week's Disquiet Junto project is to use the rhythm of rain in a pipe as the foundation for a piece of music. I piped (hoho) the audio into three frequency bands and trigger a different synth note when each band gets over a certain volume. The lowest frequency band is the lowest synth note and so on. I'll put more on lines, link at the bottom.

Drum & Hum (disquiet0612)

This is a ~5 min segment from a recent recording session of an atonal ambient/drone patch, inspired by Jaap Vink’s ‘screen patch’ explorations. New territory for me, been trying out feedback patching for awhile and this is a first attempt in doing one on this style. The sound source is ring modulated feedback created by patching a handful of Eurorack modules together.

The key modules are a Doepfer BBD delay, Make Noise Mimeophon, Make Noise Maths, Make Noise Rxmx w/ Fxdf, and Mutable Instruments Blinds. Altogether, a simple "record head / playback head" feedback loop is created that slowly builds by itself, and using Maths to suppress/compress the signal by acting as an envelope follower that controls the overall patch amplitude.

Blinds is patched as a ring modulator, and Rxmx/Fxdf stand in for the 'third octave filter' suggested in the original Screen Patch. This allows the feedback to be processed through 6 bandpass filters, including being able to scan through one or more filter bands. 

I also added another multi-mode filter, wave folder, and through zero FM VCO into the patch, allowing for more timbral range and ending up with a metallic resonance that I was pleased with.

This week's Disquiet Junto was to explore musical palindromes. 

I thought about trying to make harmonic palindromes, like chords that reflect on themselves, but it's not really how my music brain works. So I focused on stuff happening over time. 

The main structure of the track is a palindrome - when things fade in and out, etc. and when chords and melodic bits play.
The bassline is a palindrome, and has a palindromic thing happening with the attack and decay on the envelope shifting in mirror image.
The chord progession is a palindrome.
Each drum part is a palindrome, some of which would line up perfectly if you notated the whole track out and flipped it down the middle, some of which don't work like that, but each loop does mirror down the middle, e.g. the kick drum is 4 bars of 5/4 while the main structure flips around 9 bars of 5/4.
There's a plinky palindrome melody which also has a reversed reverb for the first half of the track and then a normal reverb for the second half.
