The musical path taken by Alex Ketzer on each and every of the records lining his evolutive career as both a musician and label curator seems to inexorably drive him closer and closer towards the cusp of some sort of bleached-out, post-rave stasis.

Revolving around stripped-down harmonics and intricately woven layers of elevated electronics, his newest incursion into full-length territories, “Fern”, finds him dissecting industrial and ambient tropes under the magnifying lens, peeling their idiosyncratic character off down to its most elemental nature, then reshaping the crumbs into fresh malleable matter to toy with.

Segmented into ten movements rather than proper tracks, the story in sound told here channels energies from genres wide and apart—from the beatless poetics in motion a la Vangelis of “I” to the folk-infused soundscaping on “III” and “IV”, through the bleak, throbbing abstraction of “VII” and modular playfulness of “VIII”, the momentum is clearly set towards building rhythmic expression from the ground up—from the bleary ashes of dance music components to a newly minted alphabet of deep, immersive textures and non-formulaic motifs.

Eventually ascending onto a more figurative strain of body music on final cuts “IX”­—a fluxus-adjacent maze of ultra-processed riffs and eerily cinematic atmospherism, and “X”, where Ketzer pulls out a symbiotic concert of ethereal dub techno maneuvers and mantra-like staccato, coming full circle with his deconstructivist approach of functional music, we’re left hanging at the very edge of this iterative, sisyphean act of creation, from chaos to order and back into this infinite loop again.

[NooLtd45] Alex Ketzer – Fern

@the-marx-trukker knows perfectly well what he can and cannot do, so he’s doing the things he can’t. He’s never quite done them like he has on »On Cue to Conclusion,« his third album on NOORDEN. The Berlin-based artist formerly also known as Mount Wishmore Unlimited (and, well, The Artist Formerly Known As Mount Wishmore Unlimited) has recently been active under the moniker Mark, self-releasing music whose sound might probably be best described with the title of his 2020 NOORDEN album »This Ain‘t Pop (Though It Could).« These eleven pieces follow a similar path and go one step further. Feel free to call this Lo-Fi IDM Slacker Pop, we think of it as a perfect synthesis of the raw-to-the-bones vulnerability of his music’s pop sentiment with an effortlessly cool foundation of intricate, wonky rhythms and lush harmonies.

After his previous NOORDEN release, the »There’s News From 2T5S8« EP from late 2020, was a strictly instrumental affair, the new album relies more heavily on The Marx Trukker’s work with his own vocals. The lyrics, he admits with a laugh, »are love letters in disguise but essentially very self-referential,« and »were drawn from a pool of 500 words or less.« His process of writing music is similarly granular. He samples and processes discrete acoustic sounds in order to create music that still makes concessions to his roots in electronic and dance music while also playing with the potentials and confines of the conventional pop song.

Whether it’s while writing lyrics or building his not-quite-songs from scratch, The Marx Trukker always aims at »reaching a state of serene dissatisfaction or satisfied turmoil,« as he explains it. This stoic attitude is informed by the same desire to constantly innovate that has previously driven his experiments in house, electronica, and ambient music. His methodology is an expression of a near-obsessive quest to explore the possibilities of self-expression and his dedication to what could be called self-aware DIY dilettantism: I’m not sure what exactly I am doing here, but there’s only one way to find out. Singing lessons? No thank you, I’ll just get on the mic, whether you like that or not.

And if you don’t, that’s fine—The Marx Trukker knows perfectly well that he can’t please everyone.

Haarlem (NL) based hardware-loving producer @aleks_ams contributes the 26th episode of the @noorden mixtape series. Fans of dusty, distorted, tape-recorded house music very likely came across his productions in the last couple of months on Soundcloud. With Inverted Audio already having him on the »shortlist for rookie of the year«, we highly entrust you to keep your eyes peeled for his upcoming EPs on @naturalsciences and @hesperiandivision. An ambient album on @shimmering-moods-records hits the shelves later this year.

After a bunch of live-set uploads this podcast marks Aleks’ debut DJ mixtape. It’s a compilation of (mostly unreleased) material he picked up while digging through the depths of the soundcloud crates. »There is so much yet to discover from people who are not shouting about with their stuff. I’m always on the lookout for that.«

Berlin-based artist Orion Moustache returns to Noorden with a new album, released as a limited cassette edition and dubbed in real time on Type-II chrome tape. The artist on »Shikoku Tape«:

»For this first long-form release on Noorden, I put together eight tracks that feature field recordings I made during my journey to and on Shikoku. I had two approaches when working with the recorded soundscapes: one was to interconnect the soundscape of the field recordings with additional synth and effect textures. Both the field recordings and the later-added sounds evolve constantly and encourage the listener to shift their focus of attention between them.
The second approach was to let the recordings play themselves by triggering effect chains with their own audio information. Delays, reverbs, and resonators add layers to the existing sounds and are used to create slow dynamic build-ups.
In some tracks, melodies take a more prominent role than in previous releases. Instead of a guitar, I used several synthesizers, like the Liquid Foam, Take Five, and MicroFreak, as well as my favorite electric piano – the Fender Rhodes.
I hope that listeners will be able to dive into the soundscapes and picture their own space through the music while appreciating the specific sonic qualities of each recording.«

Frankfurt based DJ Arno Schäfer contributes the 28th episode of the Noorden mixtape series. Arno stumbled upon our Soundcloud profile, liked the previous mixes and asked us, if we’d be interested in a mixtape by him. And of course: yes, we were! After listening to his recent mixes – for example his KANNMIX, a mix for LACK or the WHITE radiosession together with Edward – we’ve been very curious about what his mix for Noorden would be about. The result is a very danceable 90-minute set consisting of Arnos actual »top very important tracks«. We love it!

Our 46th mixtape-episode by @red_on is dedicated to future and vintage guitar sounds, so-called post rock, dark ambient electronics and sound art.

The DJ, producer and co-founder of Nuremberg based tape label @verydeeprec is known for playing ambient electronic with a faible for krauty house music and post rock in various live formats – lately in combination with live visual artist Subrihanna (Prizesin Haralt). 

Ahead of his new EP, coming via Noorden next year, he compiled this winter mixtape inspired by touring with his other band @miiramiira.

We love to introduce our new artists with a mixtape – so we do with @nikitavontiraspol, who released Noorden’s latest cassette »Was Lucifer more beautiful than Adonis?«  (https://soundcloud.com/noorden/ltd34) back in August.

In the 51th edition of our mixtape series, Nikita blends his favourite records of 2019’s into something that can best be described as pop. The mix including tracks by Donato Dozzy, Agoria, Jeigo, Vince Watson, &ME, S.A.M., Tim Jackiw, Dusky, Interviews, Kink, Dispo 5000, Zombies in Miami, and Statue was compiled on a warm and sunny day in the garden just before sunset – though it also works on cloudy and rainy days.
