Cork City Community Radio Live at 5 with the Connolly Youth Movement

We spoke to Ger O'Mahony from The Spitit of Mother Jones Festival.
Ger and the other committee members have been organizing the festival for 12 years.
The Cork Mother Jones Commemorative committee was established in 2012 to mark the 175th anniversary of the birth of Mary Harris / Mother Jones in Cork, Ireland. After a highly successful festival marking that anniversary it was decided to make the festival an annual event marking the life and legacy of Mother Jones.

Although famous in other parts of the world, especially in the United States of America where she was once labelled “the most dangerous woman in America”, Cork born Mary Jones (née Harris) – or Mother Jones as she is perhaps more widely known – was virtually unknown and certainly not recognised as yet in her native city.  The festivals and activities of this committee have changed that and now the name of Mother Jones is widely known in Cork and beyond.

The Cork Mother Jones Commemorative Committee, in conjunction with Cork City Council commissioned Cork Sculptor Mike Wilkins to create a limestone plaque to honour Mother Jones in the Shandon area of the city, near her birthplace.  This plaque was erected near the famous Cork Butter Market and was unveiled on 1st August 2012 which is the 175th Anniversary of her baptism in the North Cathedral (we have not been able to ascertain her actual date of birth but it would most likely have been a few days before this date).  Her parents were Ellen Cotter, a native of Inchigeela and Richard Harris from Cork city.

Few details of her early life in Cork have been uncovered to date, though it is thought by some that she was born on Blarney Street and may have attended the North Presentation Schools nearby.  She and her family emigrated to Canada soon after the Famine, probably in the early 1850s.

Later in the United States, after tragic deaths of her husband George Jones and their four children, she became involved in the struggle for basic rights for workers and children’s rights, leading from the front, often in a militant fashion. She was a constant thorn in the side of the establishment.  When she died in 1930, she was a legend in her adopted land.  A magazine (Mother Jones) is still published to this day, along with dozens of books and countless references in US Labour History.  She certainly can claim to be the most famous Cork woman in the history of the United States of America.

In 2012, 175 years passed since Mary’s birth in Cork city and to honour her life, this broad-based voluntary Commemorative Committee, along with local community organisations,  honoured one of Cork City’s most famous daughters with an immensely popular festival.  The unveiling of the plaque at John Redmond Street was  just part of a wider celebration which has now developed to an annual event which has gained international recognition.

Shantie is originally from The Netherlands and has made Cork her home since 2004. She is a proud woman of colour from South Asian heritage. 

Shantie is a passionate Women’s health advocate, organises menopause yoga classes, menopause workshops and retreats and is also the co-founder of the private Facebook group @CorkMenopauseSupport.

We spoke with Stiofán Ó Nualláin of Trademark Belfast about Worker Co-Operatives.

Stiofán has been with Trademark since 2001, having previously worked for Counteract, the anti-intimidation unit of the ICTU where he had responsibility for anti-sectarianism and anti-racism in the public sector. Before this he worked in the former Yugoslavia as co-ordinator of the SAVA (Service Civil International) Working Group on Ex-Yugoslavia. Stiofán has a range of experience in formal and informal training, education and mediation including extensive experience of work interventions in the context of sectarian disputes and community tension.

His PhD was on the theme of republican and loyalist political discourse and, following a Masters in International Human Rights Law with a focus on labour rights, he represented the labour movement on the Bill of Rights Working Group on Economic and Social Rights. Stiofán is closely involved with all aspects of Trademark’s work, with particular responsibility for its political education programmes, international collaboration and co-operative economic development.

A keen Gaeilgeoir, he has served as a trustee for Iontaobhas na Gaelscolaíochta (the fund for Irish-medium education) and is an active member of Unite the union."

'Live at 5', Worker Co-Operatives with Stiofán Ó Nualláin

John Hegarty is the director of Fourem Architects who specialise in urban design and the conservation of historic structures and spaces. Through his work he has developed a deep love for the historic architecture of Cork city and this drove John to represent a campaign to oppose the council and OPW planned flood walls along the quays in Cork. 

The campaign argues that these flood walls would drastically change the feel and look of Cork as a heritage port city and greatly diminish the view and connection the island of Cork has with its River Lee. The campaign is called Save Cork City and you will notice the Love the Lee slogan displayed at businesses around the city who support the cause. Save Cork City have been opposing the planned walls for over 5 years now and they propose that building a tidal barrier at Little Island or Tivoli would be a far more economically viable option, cause no interruption to the city centre but also save the original 18 century quay walls. 

We get into the nitty gritty of the issues surrounding Cork city as a marsh and the city's flood defence, but we also talk about dereliction/vacancy, the housing emergency, the Sextant pub and much much more... Enjoy!

We had a chat with Cllr Kenneth Collins about why voting is important, who can vote and other stuff.
~You must be living full time in the Ireland  to be eligible to vote in Ireland.
 ~You will be asked for your nationality in your application as this will affect which elections you can vote in.
 ~An Irish citizen- you are eligible to vote in all elections and referendums
 ~An EU citizen- you are eligible to vote in European and local elections
 ~A British citizen- you are eligible to vote in Dáil and local elections
 ~All other nationalities- If you are resident here, you are eligible to vote in local elections.

I was recently working at Cork City Community Radio and this is one of the Show's that I broadcasted.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Blackpool is one of the oldest areas in Cork City and has seen significant changes over the centuries. Some good, some bad an some ugly. 
We had distilleries, textiles and tanneries, and where they stood,  are now sites of, much needed, new, modern housing developments.
Where once, the ESB ‘Polefield’ served as a depot… as well as a flood-plane, we have a bustling shopping centre.
When I was growing up in Blackpool, people from Farranree, or Blarney would have been considered ‘blow-ins’ and treated with suspicion. And now, in 2023, we have a  diverse population with people from the four corners of the earth, choosing to live, work and raise their families in our beautiful community.
We could have a great argument about where it begins and ends, but I like to think, my Blackpool, at least to me, the boundaries are at Geaney’s, at the foot of Dublin Hill and the Constellation Bar at the end of the watercourse rd. Two traditional pubs have, amid all the changes,  have remained the same.
