JMW Turner was a master at capturing the atmosphere and drama he witnessed on display. By spending a lifetime outside in the landscape, sketching and recording the changing light and weather, Turner developed a deep connection to and understanding of the subject he loved. All these sketches became a memory bank of ideas to use later in his work.

See Me, Hear Me - Turner, Landscape and Light

George Vasey, Curator at the Wellcome Collection and writer, discusses the work of artist Oreet Ashery back in February 2020 at Norwich Castle. Vasey is co-editor with Oreet Ashery of 'How We Die is How We Live Only More So' (2019) a collection of writing exploring vulnerability and intimacy, death and dying in the digital era, and the politics of illness. 

Oreet Ashery's 'Passing through Metal' (2018)recently entered Norwich Castle's collection. Presented by the artist, the acquisition was made possible through Art Fund, Outset and Arts Council England, through fig futures and in collaboration with Kettle's Yard, University of Cambridge.

Spotlight On: Oreet Ashery (George Vasey)

In February 2020, the artist Laura Wilson joined Dr Rosy Gray (Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Norwich Castle) in-conversation with her collaborators on 'Deepening' (2019), a new film work commissioned as part of New Geographies, a three year project led by Wysing Arts Centre. 

Wilson is joined by Dr Melanies Giles (University of Manchester); Mark Knight (Lead Archaeologist at Must Farm, Cambridge Archaeological Unit) and Dr Abi Shapiro (The Hepworth, Wakefield) to reflect on the work, which explores the hidden landscape of Must Farm, an exceptionally well-preserved Bronze Age settlement located on the edge of a working quarry at Whittlesey, near Peterborough.
