As a collaboration between Norient and the festival Klang Moor Schopfe, this Norient Online Special gathers artistic practices reflecting the complex sonic entanglements of human cultures, the environment, and non-human worlds. The series of audio essays consisting of artist interviews, field recordings from the unique landscape of the Hochmoor of Gais, poetry, and compositions, invite experiencing the often unrecognized musicality of the world(s) in which humans are only one among many composers. Launched in 2019, this Online Special will be continuously expanded. Curated by Philipp Rhensius.

The third edition of the Norient City Sounds Series is moored in Delhi, India, as it tunes in to a polyphony of voices, songs, sounds, and narratives that reimagine and unconceal the various worlds and characters constituting the capital’s sonicities. ABOUT RYOICHI KUROKAWA
Japanese artist, born in 1978, lives and works in Berlin, Germany. Kurokawa’s works take on multiple forms such as installation works, recordings, and concert pieces. He composes the time sculpture with the field recordings and the digital generated structures, and reconstructs architecturally the audiovisual phenomenon. In recent years, his works are shown across the world"at international festivals and museums including TATE Modern [UK], Centre Pompidou [FR], Venice Biennale [IT] , Palais de Tokyo [FR], ARS Electronica [AT], Mutek [CA/MX/JP/ES].

Number Sounds: Ryoichi Kurokawa

This podcast reveals the current situation and condition of art in Yogyakarta by tracing artistic works and cultural actions from the early days of the national awakening to contemporary times. A series of statements, poems, plays, songs, and conversations that talk about identity, collective work, the art ecosystem, the position of art in society, to its imagination in the future are presented through live performances in the recording studio by Wok The Rock, Gunawan Maryanto (Alm.), and Ramberto Agozhalie.

This podcast was recorded in May 2021 and released in December 2021 to commemorate Gunawan Maryanto who left us suddenly on October 6, 2021. Hopefully, he and his work will always inspire and become a reference for the emergence of new and progressive initiatives in Indonesia and beyond.

Artificial Intelligence turns emotive on a Swiss underground radio dataset and gives up in peace – collective curatorial practices winning over. This radio feature is a collaboration between Norient and @radiobollwerk. Based in Bern, we share the same city of origin with this Swiss internet radio. This immersive sound piece captures the essence of their daily rides, revealing the sound identity of Bogotá’s affluent neighborhoods and the noise pollution they endure, resulting in a sonic exploration of class struggles in the city.

The Sounds of Contradiction (Snap)

Before the new metro in Lausanne was finished in 2008, Patricia Bosshard asked the reponsible people at TL (Public Transport Lausanne) to compose the metro station jingles. Together with sound engineer David Scrufari they recorded local sounds and sound environments and produced the short pieces. The station announcements were spoken by Renato Häusler, who shouts the hours from the cathedral tower in four directions since 2002 (a tradition that goes back to 1405, originally to alarm the people of fire, nowadays announcing the hours between 22h-2h).

Gqom from Durban is being added to our Norient playlists for quite a while now. On our recent South African tour we finally met some of the producers of this deep and dark electronic music in different townships around Durban. We interviewed them, and edited, mixed and manipulated their voices and music. Second take of our gqom edits: Menzi Ntuli, aka Menchess, co-founder of the RudeBoyz, one of the pioneers of the genre. Co-produced by Thomas Burkhalter, Bit-Tuner and Dejot.
