I was watching a movie a few months ago made in the 80s called "The Emerald Forest" and I loved it. It was about the story of an  engineer Bill Markham whose son was abducted by an aboriginal tribe on the edge of the rain forest, then the engineer spends the next 10 years searching for him. I loved this movie, all the magic, mystery, danger lurking in the deep forest but also within the human jungle, and the fact that in the jungle only the strong survive, kind of what’s happening right now but also through time and history. Ahmad returns to DJ Ink's seminal imprint once again with the "Bricks EP", four cuts of stripped back, boundary pushing Drum & Bass from this exciting and fast rising producer.
"Singularity" opens the project, laying down a heart pounding template of beating kicks, snarling wisps and open ended reverbs.  Lunar bleeps and voices add to the desolate soundscape, while carefully placed break edits cut through the tension like a knife.
The steady pulse of kick drums continue on the Akinsa assisted "Clarion Call", ushering in a body moving riddim track of crisp finger snaps, distant kettle hits and cracking hand claps.  A bleak analogue string line hovers over the whole affair, accented with b boy voices and classic mentasm bursts creating a forlorn sense of imminent dread that follows the listener along.
Regular collaborator Gremlinz joins Ahmad on the dub techno leaning title track "Bricks".  Bringing in a chest out Jungle bass line, spacious synth keys, shimmering Boymerang break slices and squelching robotic riffs. Minute sonic details and atmospheres  appear throughout adding another dimension with each play through.
Rounding out the package, Ahmad teams up with Dispatch's Dbr UK and goes straight for the dance floor jugular with the aptly named "Grinding Teeth".  Hardstep breaks, pressure building tones and a vicious reece lash combine with twisting mentasms and filtered amens all anchored by a monstrous,  wobbling sub line designed to do damage in a club.  A manic, hardcore finale to close out the affair on a high.
