For this set I played on 4 CDJ 3000’s and a V10 mixer, using both of its internal effects processors. For every No Way Back set, and for most sets, I try to prepare new hardware remasters and edits of things that I think would be fascinating recontextualized in this setting. But for NWB, it is even more special, a peak moment, so I try to have new records I’m working on in the studio to test out. For this set that means the hardware mixes I’ve been working on for Torrvo and for Andy Toth can be tested, I’m working on this hardware mixing and remastering tone palate, so I spread that to some edits to give them a whole new power. Playing at No Way Back cannot be put into words, though we try every year, it really is inexplicable without experiencing it. It’s the environment you most want to be in, the space is totally transformed, the sound is dialed in, the audience is so ready, very giving and open, and the feedback you get is incredible. People are up for a ride – we start at the Tangent and end up going to the other side of the universe. Freedom within and without. There’s no place I’d rather be, so I thought I’d share this much sooner than we usually do. Enjoy the ride.

Mattias Östling makes a welcome return to Love Love as Rolando Simmons for new LP 'Animatronics' after recent forays on Analogical Force and Furthur Electronix and nearly 8 years on from his Love Love debut 'World Building'. Hailing from rural Sweden, Östling creates understated but rich and dreamlike productions which have seen him become a familiar name beyond the braindance circles his music first found a home in, playing live at venues in the UK like Fold and Houghton Festival.  
  
As is characteristic of Rolando Simmons' work, a strong sense of narrative runs throughout this LP. 'Animatronics' stylistically plays across the gamut of Electronica, from the lush, playful braindance of 2nd track 'Purple Soap', to the upbeat syncopated rhythms within 'GlobalGroove Dust Club', and the slowly advancing icy ambient techno dirge of closer 'Memory Defrost'. The ephemeral ambient elements laced throughout allude to a sense of comfortable sedation but darker shades no doubt loom beneath. Measured in its operation and warm in its presentation, the album often steers into unknown spaces, moving through a range of tonal shifts, all the while feeling contained within a unified and detailed imaginary world.

"We Walk Together Through a Whisper" was improvised and recorded live in 2008, at The Rotunda in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (as part of the series known as "Gate"). It was released as part of a free EP, "Stars Whisper", which came out shortly after Northern Valentine's Silber Records debut album, "The Distance Brings Us Closer".

My version of Louis & Bebe Barron's song "Ancient Krell Music" from the Forbidden Planet soundtrack. I realy like the idea of this being music from another race somewhere in a distant galaxy.

Ancient Krell Music

Northern Valentine is a Philadelphia, Pennsylvania based ambient / drone collective, anchored by husband and wife, Robert and Amy Brown. Formed in 1997, their music is largely improvisational and is often set to original films.

Coaxing sounds from electric and acoustic sources, they weave meditative drones and soundscapes with "barely there" post-rock instrumentation to create a tapestry that Phil McMullen (Terrascope Online) refers to as "minimalist ambiance at its best. Heartfelt, soulful and affecting, like gazing into a scrapbook of memories".

Writing about their 2008 Silber Records release, The Distance Brings Us Closer, Jeff Penczak (Foxy Digitalis) says..."Northern Valentine’s music delivers a sense of floating in space or a communion with nature where the listener is enveloped in clouds of billowing sonics. The listener’s imagination can run wild creating images to accompany this ambient soundtrack...In sum, an awesomely hypnotic listening experience."

Their sound has drawn comparisons to a range of artists; from Labradford, Windy and Carl, Flying Saucer Attack, Fennesz and Eluvium, to Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Mogwai. They have performed live and toured in the US and Europe.
