Scrying the Landscape XIV. The exquisitely mystifying 1981 film 𝘐𝘯 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘯 by Derek Jarman, sound tracked by Throbbing Gristle, offers a ritualistic journey into the English countryside. Inspired by the curious cinematography and sound of the avant-garde film, this episode of Scrying is our own iteration of its score in an attempt to capture similar narrative tools it uses to ascend into ancient worlds ever-present in the streets we all walk through: The slowing of frames skewing scenes of the (un)familiar landscape forsakes straight linearity and etches pathways to the mobility of experienced time. In the fragmentary nature of duration, consciousness shines through drawing out archetypal images of human existence in Jungian terms. For this, we reach out a sonic gesture to touch base with primaeval, inherited memories in a melting pot of pagan iconography and the mystery of the everyday.

SCRYING THE LANDSCAPE XV w. LA SERPIENTE ‘SEARCHING FOR THE SUBLIME’ [04.10.2023]

For almost two decades Jeffrey has been a programmer in the underground cinemas of Amsterdam, describing himself as a 'cultural activist'. In this podcast he and Vanja explore diverse soundtracks to neglected and forgotten movies. When the use of music in modern cinema has become clichéd and standardized, perhaps it is better to turn to the abandoned past for inspiration. Therefore in this podcast-journey there is an emphasis on delving into uncharted territory—secret places of mystery and otherworldly alternatives. Jeffrey feels it's in these buried treasures that a hard-hitting counter-culture can be envisioned. During our discussions in between the music tracks there is also an attempt to create a different idea about how music can be used in movies, one where the music clashes against the image rather than melting together with it emotionally.

This selection of music soundtracks traverses many parts of the world, embracing directors like Andrzej Żuławski, Kenneth Anger, Marguerite Duras and Shuiji Tereyama... and features music by Jean Guérin, Andrzej Korzyński, Bernard Parmegiani, Wanda Warska and Toru Takemitsu among many others.

It's a gritty ride that creeps under the skin, perfectly balanced between dark moods and heavy vibes. Noisy, repetitive, raw, ominous, psychedelic, sparse, cold, hypnotic and haunting. These seemingly endless grooves are extremely addictive with a soupçon of danger. Like someone drilled a hole in your head for the dub-metal maggots to crawl in.

« Delphine from Demord Enregistrements and Daya from 2F4F & Psst Mlle, friends and both active in the musical scene between Paris and Brussels for several years now, met up last summer in shiny Plangenoual at 'No Problemos' fest in Brittany organized by the 'Nickelos' team (Demord & friends). They shared their common passion for frenetic drums, deafening rhythms and greasy melodies during 1h30.

Somewhere Press is a Glasgow-based record label that embodies the emotive, narrative-led spaces in sound work, uplifting outsider voices and queering notions of experimental music and print. 

This mix explores the discrepant sounds of dream states.
Ethereal choral vocals are entangled with distorted and disturbed voices and a drifting psychedelic ambience is broken apart by rumbling atmospheres of industrial.
As layers break apart, raw and resonant drones float beneath the surface; an opiated, eternal delirium.
