GiGi FM is a trained dancer, which gives her a deeper insight into the intrinsic relationship between music and bodily movement. You can read a lot more about her philosophy and approach in the interview below, but you don't even need to know about it to hear this in her RA Podcast—a collection of swirling deep techno that rivals anything made by the usual cohort of "hypnotic" techno heads.

Looking at the tracklist doesn't really do it justice, but the names involved give you an idea of what to expect: Varuna, ASC, Donato Dozzy, The Orb, Sunju Hargun. This is techno that ripples rather than bludgeons, that moves with an ethereal grace, where tracks bleed into one another beautifully, with a few surprises, too. While you're here, you should check out her Magnetite EP for Bambounou's label Bambe, already one of the young year's most bewitching techno records. But if this is your introduction, then turn off the lights, light a candle or some palo santo, and sink into two hours of your new favorite techno DJ.

Next up comes Canadian-born polymath Darwin, who’s been getting Berliners talking ever since she kicked off her event series REEF back at now defunct venue Griessmühle. Tired of providing partygoers with the same formulaic sounds they’d come to expect, she started to play around with others, dubstep and bass among them. It was a fresh approach that through persistence ended up paying off with a form that’s as animate, subaquatic and essential to its surroundings as the ocean reefs that inspired the name. A UK-leaning sound, that pays homage to breaks, drum n bass and garage and fuses it with a techno more indicative of her chosen digs. Nowadays that approach has really gained traction and her parties blossomed into something much larger, encompassing her own selections, whether at UNFOLD or closing Berghain’s Klubnacht, as well as the launch of her SPE:C imprint. Her loose selection and low-end frequencies are a modern take on a long tradition of rumbling bass and out-and-out techno, brought together with a killer instinct for the hourly requirements of a dancefloor with high expectations. Following on from her previous techno stints at Bassiani, Podcast 251 further explores this side and delves back into her roots; a studio mix brought to you from this true pioneer, mastered by bestie Esposito.

"Designing clubs is about understanding psychology." The famed architects talk about bringing emotions, durability and hidden logic into era-defining nightlife spaces.

How do you design the world's best clubs? Studio Karhard, the architecture firm started by Thomas Karsten and his wife, Alexandra Erhard, in 2003, know exactly which ingredients go into a successful nightlife space. The Berlin-based duo are the visionaries behind Berghain and ∄ in Kyiv, as well as a number of private residences, businesses and smaller venues around the world. Their specialty, they say, is salvaging forgotten spaces and resurrecting them to serve a new purpose. 

In this RA Exchange, Karsten talks about first coming across the building that's now Berghain and working tirelessly with engineers and city planners to preserve its neoclassical facade. As he explains, creating a memorable atmosphere goes beyond just designing for aesthetics. There are countless hidden design features that serve to make venues like Berghain comfortable. 

But according to Karsten, Studio Karhard's masterpiece is ∄, which they began designing in 2018. He describes the special experience of first visiting the abandoned  brewery—which was then in extreme disrepair—and bringing the lessons they took away from building Berghain to make this Ukrainian space their most successful project yet.

The Bunker Podcast 235 comes from @erikluebs. This is a live set recorded in Milan on March 28 at the party Acquario.

Erik Luebs is a US-born musician and sound designer based in Japan. Eschewing typical genre tropes, Luebs approaches techno with a playfully disruptive technique, reinterpreting the fundamentals using built-from-scratch patches and labyrinthine sequencing. While the labor-intensive process is inspired by a wide range of luminaries such as Mark Fell and Rrose, the resulting music is firmly tied to the dance floor.

Luebs released an EP on The Bunker back in 2021, and has since released on DJ Nobu’s Bitta label (@djnobu_bitta), and @nousklaeraudio. He also has an upcoming release on the legendary @kompakt imprint.

Erik will be playing an ambisonic surround sound set for a horizontal audience at Going In at Reforestor’s Laboratory in Brooklyn this Friday, and an extended sunrise dancefloor set at The Bunker’s takeover of @nowadaysnyc Nonstop on Sunday morning.

"The week prior to creating this set, I decorated my space and placed my mind inside the powerful and quite honestly life-changing memories I hold of No Way Back; the curiosity, the cavern-like environment, the audio experimentation and boundary crossing evoking responses that vary from wandering honestly and freely inside one's thoughts to the complete obliteration of said thoughts and letting the wisdom of the body perform its work on us.  My intention with this ambient set (all of my sets..) was to create currents, gradually, with just enough whispers and fragments to be subtle guides and invitations for you to imbue the sounds with your own meaning, to add your own messages and experience to the currents.  If there was ever any lesson to myself about how incomplete my work feels without this crucial element, it was the necessity this year to communicate from a distance, via video instead of a real-time space.  And how it felt most complete again when we gathered together virtually in the live stream, being curious, being supportive and present, sharing psychedelic gifs, chatting, laughing and crying!  So there it was - it happened, we connected and transcended the medium.  I will always hold this year's event dear to me for reminding us of what we still have.
