Dark Entries welcome back San Francisco based DJ and producer Sepehr Alimagham for his debut album ‘Shaytoon’. He cites early influences like Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, and post-hardcore bands for kick-starting his affinity for off-kilter, underground music. In 2017 Sepehr began performing live PA sets and released his first EP on Black Catalogue. He’s since released music on Squirrels On Film, Acid Camp, Legwork, EON, and the ‘Body Mechanics’ EP for us in 2018.

Drenched in nostalgia from his upbringing, ‘Shaytoon’ pays homage to 1970s Iranian albums that were on rotation throughout his youth. Eight tracks of twisted acid, left-of center electro, sludgy psychedelia, and things-you-can-maybe-call-techno are a few of the sonic elements found within. Regular listeners will find Sepehr’s signature perspiratory dance-floor vibe, but some songs also showcase a low-slung, cerebral approach. Sepehr's unique sonic palette carves an interesting space in the dance music world by harnessing the spirit of his cultural ancestors. All songs have been mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The artwork pays tribute to ‘70s Iranian pop and funk albums with bold Farsi calligraphy and portraits by Sahra Jajarmikhayat. In relation to the music, the album cover creates a dichotomy much like Throbbing Gristle's ’20 Funk Jazz Greats’. Berakhs (Dance).

Frankfurt am Main has been on the german map of electronic dance music for arguably a handful of decades, characterized by vibrant scenes of emerging artists and DJs, and a (more often than not) industrious habit, which became notorious over the course of the 1990s. The crucial years of 1991 thru 1994, in which genres increasingly became sophisticated and attributed with regional sound signifyers, saw many protagonists getting into gear for international careers, while others ditched middle-class life perspectives for making a living with music related activities. 

'Archive – A Frankfurt Catalogue 91-94' is a selective, rather cerebral sonic cross section of Frankfurt am Main. Unlike other compilations based on cities, Archive does not claim to be representative—it is hyper-specific and curated to emphasize the emergent sound of an era, which became a topic of special interest in recent years. Experimental, bleepy acid and techno, science fiction house music with trance seeping in around the edges—the protagonists featured on this curated Compilation represent many of Frankfurt’s burgeoning scenes back then.

The tracklist might as well be read as a rhizomatic, yet partial analysis of the Frankfurt scene around that time. The first track sees two pioneers of Frankfurt’s pre house and techno tape scene, Pink Elln (aka Tobias Freund) and Atom Heart team up as Phobia, followed by a short-lived triad called Ongaku which consisted of Atom Heart and the DJ duo of Ata and Heiko MSO. Those DJs were to co-found the Delirium record store and start their own family of record labels soon after, joined by two guys hailing from close-by Darmstadt: Roman Flügel and Jörn Elling Wuttke. Roman and Jörn initially created their Alter Ego project as an outlet for releases on Harthouse; an infamous label, run by Sven Väth amongst others, which also released countless productions created by Ralf Hildenbeutel. Redeye’s and Solar Eclipse’s tracks had been released on after 6am point, a label that had once been run out of the lively and creative hub at Delirium record store. The project Sieg Über Die Sonne had been started by Tobias Freund and Martin Schopf (aka Dandy Jack) in the late 1980s, both close friends to Atom Heart, who completes this compilation with a rare house track.

‘Centre of Attention’ completes the various artists EP release trilogy from Left, Right & Centre with the continuation of bassy, break neck offerings as they reach the summit sonically. It is available as a four track digital EP in addition to a limited edition LRC-USB that features all 12 tracks from the 12 artists exhibited throughout their label launch.
The EP is set forth by Porter Brook with a spooky, new school, drum & bass hybrid - The Proposed Roads. UK influences follow suit, in Loggerheads from Hedchef, as it embodies a complex tapestry of drum sequences and a demented twist on everyones favourite rave stab. Twisting and turning, Who’s There? by Alexis swivels the mood to mystery, combining warped sounds with pulsing hi-hats to create a full bodied track for euphoric moments. Feloneezy answers Alexis’ question with Pick Up The Phone picking up the pace with a two step flow of skipping snares that’s both fierce and smooth. Unlike their previous releases within their V/A trilogy, this extended play includes artists from overseas that share a passion for UK flavoured techno and bass. Left, Right & Centre wish to inspirit and uplift with the euphonious exhibit of this generation’s artists in low end driven sounds.

Laughing Ears is poised to release her second LP this January via club music vanguards, Infinite Machine. Her lengthiest offering to date, Blood consists of 10 tracks that highlight Laughing Ears’s knack for building otherworldly atmospherics within club-ready, dance music structures. Taking the tale of Fenrir as it’s starting point, (a giant wolf in Norse mythology who spent much of his life bound and chained to a rock in captivity), the album conceptually deals with family ties and the melancholic beauty that can be found in the darkness of loss.

Blood opens with the airy, gliding synths and heavy drumwork of Flickering Shadows. The track has a unique sense of space due its wide stereo-imaging as well as Laughing Ears’ haunting melodies and driving rhythms. A 100bpm creeper fit for exploring uncharted virtual lands. On the following track, Loki, things are stripped back to their functional essentials. Tabla hits, bass pluses and strange whistles brush up against each other in a head-spinning assemblage before surging towards a climactic resolution.

The serene Untouched Places showcases Laughing Ears’ unique approach to melody and harmony. With a background in singing herself, her synths lines here seem to tonally intertwine, like vocal DNA, veering from harmonious and dissonant phases. Compared to the tranquility of Untouched Places, LP title-track, Blood, moves the record in a more intense direction. A brick wall of compressed percussion and humanoid-sung samples seem to battle it out for the listener’s attention in an enthralling sonic confrontation.

On Blood’s mid-point, Night Whisps, the producer’s love for the thrilling soundtracks of Satoshi Kon’s anime movies definitely comes through clearly. Bass drones claustrophobically reverberate around the mix - acting as a musical backbone that a wide array of staccato samples are stitched onto. Next up, Murderous Means, as its blood-thirsty title suggests, is a brutal and hard-hitting club track that’ll keep listeners guessing as the composition twists and turns. The song’s furious, ever-evolving drum patterns create mesmerizing rhythms you can’t help but bob your head to.

The polyrhythms continue on the following piece, Buona Fortuna. Like footwork, a genre she looks to for inspiration, on Buona Fortuna, the main groove is built out of a disparate family of drum samples which work in tandem - much like how individual dots of an Impressionist painting cooperate to form a single, concrete image. Laughing Ears then slows things down slightly with Glimmer, which sees the producer mix the low end stylings of UK Funky with strung out horns and gong hits.

On Potcheen, the longest of the record, Laughing Ears ambitiously constructs a track that starts from curious, ambient beginnings before morphing into a ferocious footwork-infused banger. Rounding off the release, Warm as A Lizard is a groove-laided drum freakout, crammed full of dense textures which build into a tonal fever pitch.

‘I just wanted to make good UK Bass music' is what Francesco said to me as we spoke about his remarkably unique approach to electronic music. Considering the three-track sophomore EP, It is evident immediately that this initial incentive was one that he was quick to let go of. We started to notice this in a big way when his first EP 'Pianta Tenera' was sent to us. Our ears pricked up as we listened to this standalone producer amongst a sea of talent. It can be hard to distinguish between unique styles as easily these days; but there was no issue here.

Jaf Ge Nos makes his second appearance on NHS with a release that takes an even greater leap out into theatrical, psychedelic progressive territories that span across 3 starkly different pieces. Often jazzy, frequently emotively eclectic, moving and undeniably rhythmic, Jaf Ge Nos has dialed up the originality tenfold on ‘Un Discorsetto’ and broken through the chains of restriction (Not that he really had any before anyway, but you get the idea). Branching out of the digital realm and skittering into instrumentation to add a whole level of depth and individuality to already obscure sound. We have decided to dub him the 'Nektar of Bass Music'. It's as if Southern American rhythm entered into a deep loving relationship with Prog Rock and they conceived this litter of love children. It's like watching a film that is comprised of every genre in one sitting.

Jaf Ge Nos set out to assimilate into the UK Bass music scene and ended up further away than he ever intended; and we love him for it. Let him whisk you away on an adventure across the three epic stories that make up the ‘Un Discorsetto’ EP.
