NOT 97 Season Two

Welcome back to NOT 97—this is Season Two’s premier episode featuring the one and only Cady Drell (@hella_drella), Glamour Magazine's Sex & Relationships Editor.

Cady brings strong, indie rock stalwarts to the table—two bands with passionate local followings that have managed to stay under-the-radar for years: Boston’s Bad History Month & Brooklyn’s Charly Bliss.

“Big One,” a stand out from Madeline Kenney’s recent debut, is discussed, as well as the dense, industrial production of classically-trained jazz vocalist Novelty Daughter.

In addition we feature retro-inspired selections from Gavin Turek and Million Miles—singers who’ve developed fresh, modern takes on soul music.

NOT97 Season Two — Episode One (Feat. Cady Drell)

Stro Elliot — prolific producer, multi-instrumentalist and the newest member of The Legendary Roots Crew — shares the table for Season Two's second episode.

Digging deep into London's rich, ever-evolving music scene, we introduce Hak Baker's street-worn stories, the jazz sensibilities of producer Eric Lau, and Puma Blue: a shadowy, lovelorn young crooner.

Northampton's Mal Devisa plays a raw, menacing new track called "Crowd Pleaser," experimental psych-soul project Clark & The Community is discussed, as well as a grand, cinematic, fiddle-forward song by Dina Maccabee.

NOT97 Season Two — Episode Two (Feat. Stro Elliot)

With Daniel Schultz—RCA Records' rap-focused A&R—at the shop for today's episode, hip hop comes to the forefront. We explore New York rap's vast spectrum of classic sounds from sharp-lipped Brooklyn lyricist Latasha Alcindor to the effortless flows and intricate stories of Gabe 'Nandez. 

The tight and dynamic Vancouver five-piece Peach Pit offers "Alrighty Aphrodite" and a mesmerizing single from Denmark duo Smerz is played. 

We dive into "Lost Inside You" by Uhmeer, a song co-producer by illustrious London DJ Eric Lau (previously featured on 2.2). Lau shared with us high praise for the furtive young artist: Uhmeer is "one of the most gifted young people I've met," he says.

NOT97 Season Two — Episode Three (Feat. Daniel Schultz)

On today's episode we welcome industry veteran Dan Solomito to the Only NY store. Solomito has over 15 years of experience in the music industry with an impressive resume that ranges from work in artist management, A&R, and even as an assistant to Damon Dash. These days you can catch him slinging coffee beans at his own S,T Coffee in Bedstuy.

Featuring one of the strongest tracklists yet, today's episode is completely balanced. The first half pulls influence from throwback sounds born in the 70s and 80s—vibrant and dynamic picks like "Just Do You" from multi-instrumentalist Lord Echo and "Luck of The Draw," a modern spin on New Wave from Common Body.

The second run around the table hip hop takes over. We introduce a song about healthy eating from a prolific underground Atlanta rapper named Tha God Fahim, as well as a Neptunes-inspired track from Ohio's Vada Azeem, and some weighty, rasp-ridden bars from Dallas's Rikki Blu. 

Episode four finishes strong with a smooth, contagious track form londoner Col3trane—a promising young crooner who manages to remain fresh while displaying a striking resemblance to the god Frank Ocean.

NOT97 Season Two — Episode Four (Feat. Dan Solomito)

Music supervisor and licensing director Emilee Morgan stopped by the shop for today's episode, introducing nostalgic rock from the husband and wife duo behind Seattle's Smokey Brights, as well as a pop perfect track from Atlanta's The Shadowboxers. 

We discuss a cathartic and contagious standout from Stella Donnelly's debut record "Thrush Metal," unearth a lost song from a shadowy North Carolina folk singer named Carl Pike, and play refreshing new singles from artists like Norway's Fieh and London's Bakar.

NOT97 Season Two — Episode Six (Feat. Emilee Morgan)

This is not a podcast. This is not a radio show. 

This is NOT 97, a home for discovering new music from talented, under-the-radar artists around the world.

On each episode, three hosts and a guest meet around a table at Noah NY to discuss fresh music found in the depths of the Internet. They present two tracks each, released in the last six to eight months from artists with under ten thousand followers. Discourse and context round out each show, as the team breaks down what they hear and what each sound means to them.
