Time doesn't pass the same when shjva’s behind the decks. It folds in on itself like a bad trip or a perfect sunrise. 

Born in Lutsk, now deeply rooted in Warsaw’s underground, she’s been building her sound through Penumbrum (her label label & party), as co-owner of Qualia Records and through holding a long-standing residency at the city’s beloved Jasna Club.

Across past releases for Viscera Transmissions, Brutaż, Warning, People & Places and Common Ancestors, shjva's sound is always developing and always morphing. Her live sets and collabs with Volodymyr Gnatenko and Stereometrix stretch that sound even further, which sits somewhere between dub techno, dream states, and the kind of melancholic jazz you’d hear drifting out of a broken speaker at the afters. It’s hypnotic and deep.

Today's Wednesday Alternative mix is a love letter to minimalism, recorded using a prototype rotary mixer built by shjva's Polish friend Kamilescu, the mixer is raw, tactile and beautiful, just like this set which contains deep cuts and spaced out percussion. 

This is vinyl only recording that touches the ear on the softest pressure points, all day listening to create a brisk morning atmosphere.

"From a young age, Daichi was immersed in a variety of music genres while working at Oppa-La in Enoshima. This exposure led him to pursue a career as a DJ. He went on to form the party and DJ collective "Vinyl Youth," which gained significant attention with tours in Korea and a standout performance at the Rainbow Disco Club in 2022. 

In the realm of music production, Daichi released a trilogy of edits with the Berlin and Barcelona-based label "MM Discos." In 2024, he collaborated with Yamarchy to release a 12-inch record on Japan’s prestigious label "Crue-L." His varied activities continue to infuse new energy into both domestic and international music scenes."

"London-based DJ, radio host and label owner Rosie Ama operates in the outer fringes of dance music, slinging her sleazy cocktail of low-slung chuggers, leftfield house and synth-driven grooves in basements, bars, fields and clubs across the UK and beyond.

Having cut her teeth as a writer and editor for online music platforms Stamp The Wax and Ransom Note, Rosie went on to form Kiara Scuro in 2016 with her friend Nadia - a DJ and production duo with releases for the likes of fabric originals, Ritmo Fatale and Faux Poly, as well as long-standing radio residencies on Rinse FM and Balamii Radio.

After a decade together, Rosie has now turned her focus to her solo project and the trippy sonics that first ignited her passion for DJing, and continue to guide the output of her record label, Human Endeavour. Home to artists like Anastasia Zems, Justine Forever, Nandele, Medicine 8 and Thomass Jackson. 

As another outlet to share her musical discoveries, Rosie hosts a bi-monthly radio show on Bristol’s Noods Radio called Melodic Odds, which showcases the music she listens to away from the club."

For today’s mix, we’ve got a recording from Rosie’s warm up set for Optimo at Phonox, recorded on the 21st June 2025. A proper journey through the sounds she’s best known for.

Für Weihnachten sollte es einfach mal was ganz anderes werden. Deswegen hab ich „Tales From The Woods“ gebeten mir was Besinnliches für den 24.12. zu vermischen. Dabei herausgekommen ist ein Swing-Set der besonderen Art.  Danke Eric für deine kreative Umsetzung … erstklassig.

Und sonst … naja ich wünsch allen meinen geneigten Hörern, Follower, Freunden und anderen Menschen eine ruhige oder feierreiche Zeit. Aber keine Angst eine Folge gibt’s noch in diesem 2015 … lasst euch überraschen.

"I’ve always been sensitive to my surroundings and the world is in a very vulnerable place at the moment. I felt I needed to express my true emotions through something a little bit different to a conventional DJ mix and also that just writing one song was not going to be enough.

It was almost like composing a score, the only difference being that the pictures were only in my head. My ambition was for the music to evoke a visual response in the listener rather than just an emotional one. To do that I took some audio snippets of real life current affairs scenarios that really struck a chord in me and then used my DJ instinct to think of a track/musical piece that would fit well to that particular scene. Sometimes when I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted I added my own music over existing music or did my own sound design to create my own sound effects and also wrote some original pieces in the moment. It was very important to me to create ultimate flow and I felt this could only have been achieved without having any beats supporting the music. I also didn't want to make it eclectic nor constant as I felt that would disrupt the listener’s focus emotionally. There is a strong dynamic range throughout similar to classical music and also some parts that are almost meditative and then in contrast some more intense moments.

Not An Animal is a label born from the party debris left uncleaned from London’s infamous Bad Passion parties, as ran by Chris Stoker and Andy Bainbridge.

As Chris and Andy’s energy was being devoted more and more to their musical endeavours (Chris - Ess O Ess with Jamie Blanco / Andy - Machete Savane with Saul Richards & more recently Latrec with Ali Colling) it became both a logical and inevitable step that they would eventually see the birth of their own record label, to showcase not only their own music but also that of the friends that they’ve made in over a decade of throwing and attending parties in various guises.

It’s this collective nature which means that Not An Animal cannot be pinned down to one single sound, genre or style. The music is instead linked by a commonality of taste and approach from all of the artists involved. While you can draw some slight comparisons with the contributors (which include the aforementioned Ess O Ess and Machete Savane, as well as Man Power, Lauer, Roman Flugel, Chida, Suzanne Kraft, The Backwoods, Kuniyuki, Frank Butters, Justin Van Der Volgen, Discodromo, Tiago & Angophora ) it would be impossible to say that anything truly unites them further than an open aesthetic which is receptive to sounds as various as Techno, Disco, Rock, Balearica and good old fashioned House, and which doesn’t try to draw any distinction between any of them.
