For the latest BP podcast we’d like to highlight and celebrate the latest release on Is It Balearic recordings and who better to put the mix together than label owners & producers Ampo & Timm aka COYOTE. The release itself is a special one for us, as not only is it from our gob shite brothers in the north LAST WALTZ and produced by SMOOVE (of Smoove And Turrell fame), but it also features remixes from the 2 Bad Passion side projects, these been Andy Bainbridge & Saul Richards MACHETE SAVANE & Chris Stoker & Jamie Blanco’s ESS O ESS. The label is also about to release a compilation in collboration CHIDA’s ENE records from Japan. Compiled by MOONBOOTS this is a represenation of the 1st 5 years of the label with tracks taken from 2006-2011. The Japanese edition will also be accompanied by a mixed versions. Also look out for the next full COYOTE release on Rothmans with remixes from Mark E & Spandex.

Not An Animal are known for their heated takes on the art of disco-sampling house music, and Ess O Ess is one of the key factors in defining that sound. This comes through in spades on Take You To A Secret Place, where the title track comes marching out atop a deadly bassline that will cut through any mix to get the people freaking out. The dub mix is equally deadly, flying a generous dose of cosmic sparkle into the mix without losing the punch in the original production. Kuniyuki Hard takes a daring approach that slows the track down to a creep and emphasises space and tension. The Angophora version is even more drastic, seemingly stripping all the recognisable elements of the track out and leaving behind a plaintive thread of ambient instrumentation.

Aptly setting the scene with some dance-floor absurdity, Komodo comes Running into The Sun for NAAR 015.

Perfectly obtaining the dance-floor ambiance, 'Running into The Sun' produces the visceral beat that gets the party started, with quintessential house stabs channeling the tracks inner balearic heat. Next on the A, Eric Duncan's remix of 'Running into The Sun' funnels the original's heavier elements and pours them into a rattling house shaker. 

On side B, the steady pace of 'Slow Burning' swiftly evaporates with blissful counter melodies that intertwine with arpeggiated synths, sludgy 303s and propulsive drums that create a hypnotic timbre. 'Between Shadows' explores the balearic-beat once more, with opposing guitar melodies vibrating as the soundtrack to this drive-time burnout. Finally, new kids on the block, Latrec add their intrusive Techno remix of 'Slow Burning' to complete the release.

Komodo -  Running Into The Sun [Not An Animal Records]

Instantly tom-rolling into a neo-electro commodity, 'Voice Inside' undulates with lustrous vocals that stand as the tracks core. Pads cling to bleeps and guitar chunks that evaporate with alternating delays. 'Voice Inside (French)' adds a sensual linguistic twist, although the elements remain the same, they feel so different. 'Voice Inside (Dub)' completes the A, stripping tones back and chopping the duration to find yet another gorgeous avenue.

On the flip, the Backwoods Remix adds to the original atmosphere with a face scrunching bass-line and pulsating 4/4 kicks that embrace the not so distant future. Last but by no means least, the mighty Craig Richards' signature 808s pound on the remix to close the B. Pulling darker tones to pitch shifted vocals, this minimalist beat composition is perfectly suited for vigorous floors.

Not An Animal Podcast No.65 - IAN BLEVINS - December 20

Not An Animal is a label born from the party debris left uncleaned from London’s infamous Bad Passion parties, as ran by Chris Stoker and Andy Bainbridge.

As Chris and Andy’s energy was being devoted more and more to their musical endeavours (Chris - Ess O Ess with Jamie Blanco / Andy - Machete Savane with Saul Richards & more recently Latrec with Ali Colling) it became both a logical and inevitable step that they would eventually see the birth of their own record label, to showcase not only their own music but also that of the friends that they’ve made in over a decade of throwing and attending parties in various guises.

It’s this collective nature which means that Not An Animal cannot be pinned down to one single sound, genre or style. The music is instead linked by a commonality of taste and approach from all of the artists involved. While you can draw some slight comparisons with the contributors (which include the aforementioned Ess O Ess and Machete Savane, as well as Man Power, Lauer, Roman Flugel, Chida, Suzanne Kraft, The Backwoods, Kuniyuki, Frank Butters, Justin Van Der Volgen, Discodromo, Tiago & Angophora ) it would be impossible to say that anything truly unites them further than an open aesthetic which is receptive to sounds as various as Techno, Disco, Rock, Balearica and good old fashioned House, and which doesn’t try to draw any distinction between any of them.
