Ulla Records is back with another VA : « Shifted Frequencies ». For our two years anniversary we wanted to treat you with something special, our first physical release, on vinyl !

Now you know our mojo : to explore that 80s inspired, wonky disco sound, in all its shapes and forms ! From Italo to acid, EBM or New Wave, we wanted to showcase some of the multiple facets of the label, our interpretation of these « Shifted Frequencies ». Between France, Italy, UK & Germany, we gathered a fine selection of talented artists, a mix of familiar faces and new encounters.

We’re thrilled to welcome Younger Than Me and REES for the first time on the label, and equally so to have Alberto Melloni back with us, alongside label founders Austher and Naranja. All together, they captured some fragments of our shifted frequencies.

The Nothing Was There Edit Is an edit of the original industrial track from the legendary project  'Tone Set' that combines most devilish synth melodies with heavy bass and percussion from the original cut inside one more playable edit.

The Edit was made some time ago, this track has 2 official edits, one made by the label released with their box version of Cal Ranch's EP, and a long original version by the artist, we like both but we figured out we could have one edit with our favourite moments of this piece, i made it to be played in some concerts and now I'm sharing here in the cloud.

About the album:
This is a soundtrack to imaginary nightime streetscapes in a world that resembles our own.
Crumbling asphalt slick with oil and grease reflects the woozy glow of late night bodegas in acrid pink, yellow and green.
Drakkar Noir is a feceless figure who inhabits this world, an alias shamelessly lifted from a sleazy and long out-of-fashion scent, a brand name derived from a mashup of mythical pretensions and hollow advertising jargon. Part Human and part digital fiction, Drakkar Noir is, like the city itself, a shapeshifter who feeds and is fed by the collective dreams and nightmares floating above the buildings and into smoke-filled skies.

The Warsaw-born, Berlin-based artist has honed her craft from Europe to India and beyond, both as a DJ and as founder and curator of SFORA, an intimate festival in the Polish wilderness which takes place in June. Melting moody electro with groovy techno, breakbeat with 4x4 rhythms or smashing a techno set spiced up with acid, breaks, bass, punk, 2 step, and D’n’B, the unexpected is what you can expect and her sets always have a unique touch and fresh dance floor energy. We hosted her debut at Tresor earlier this year and today we're thrilled to host this eclectic mix in our podcast series.

The compilation open with "Night Watcher" by Avenue313, a Detroit style track filled with atmospheric sounds and a solid bass-line. It's followed by g13ck's "Malicia", a track with Electropop influence and a monster bass-drum, than the third track is "Rhythmusmaschine” by SLAKER has an modulated arpeggio and rich vintage synth sounds. To close Aliensextoy with "Antizer0 Reversal PRG", a groovy track with a unique synth hook and evocative speech samples.

Remember that straightforward mix of EBM and synth-punk that came out on Antinote last year, wrapped in a suggestive black and gold sleeve? The lyrics were strictly not ambiguous and the music produced by Panoptique and Paula was joyfully aggressive. Broken glass, dogs barking & cats roaring: Succhiamo is back and gives us news from the scrapyard. 

The thing is, it seems that Succhiamo’s scrapyard has been animated by Bill Plympton : in place of dogs and cats, it’s a lew Pink Panther chasing a spaced-out Scooby-Doo on Dolore Dentro or Stai Male. Happily championing bad taste, the two musicians even venture into the illegitimate territories of italo-pop missed hits, shaped for lip-sync performances on Rai Uno with the nagging Que Pena. 

As we’re getting close to the middle of the record, the music gets openly punkier, climaxing with the explicitly named Desiderio Di Violenza, brushing past 200 BPM. While the inevitable silence following the last notes of Que Pena temporarily puts an end to the pleasant nightmare that is Mani In Fuoco, the figures – somehow similar to those inhabiting the world of Fritz the Cat – that Succhiamo insidiously inserts into the listener’s head don’t fade away: they patiently wait for the duo’s pulsing drum machines and the saturated synths to wake up again and set them in motion for another ride.
