Raised in Aarhus by South African parents, Shaquille Beck McGosh has been DJing since he was just 14 years old and started producing at 19. Now with years of experience behind the booth and digging in crates for the most exciting rare gems, he runs Prom Night Records and can be found DJing every weekend in the Danish capital and beyond. Making a stir in the EU scene with his sets spanning sleazy disco cuts and chuggers, Italo house, afro-house, acid, techno and beyond, Shaq plays often in esteemed underground spots, as well as taking dancers on regular all-night journeys at Copenhagen’s Jolene.

With a sound he describes as nostalgic, groovy and sparkly, Shaq is heavily influenced by 80’s pop culture and stands out from the crowd with his captivating selections and thoughtfully crafted sets. Shaq says, “A lot of my productions are inspired by, or centered around a fusion of 70's and 80's Disco combined with modern and contemporary styles of House music.” However, his greatest musical inspiration comes from his parents, who fled South Africa in the late 1970s during apartheid. He grew up listening to their record collection spanning soul, funk, RnB, jazz, disco and hip hop.

With several HÖR Berlin streams, radio shows on Rinse FM, Refuge Worldwide, mixes for Ransom Note, NTS and more as well as his weekly local gigs across Denmark and abroad under his belt. This year Shaq has performed at some of Denmark’s biggest festivals including Distortion Festival, Roskilde Festival, Northside and Dutch Milkshake Festival. An essential artist to watch carving out his space in the EU underground, all eyes on Prom Night.

This podcast is made of everything Shaq loves, from percussion driven themes to Caribbean grooves, from dreamhouse to tropidisco! Enjoy it as much as we do!

LYO#235 - Prom Night

On Christmas Day we announced that SOULMEEX PRO would become a monthly series in 2024, so we didn't want to waste a single minute and today, we're excited to welcome a key figure in the electronic scene: Kasper Bjørke.
 
The Danish, Copenhagen based artist started making music together with Tomas Barfod (WhoMadeWho), releasing music under the name Filur and mainly active between 1999 and 2006.
 
Kasper adventures as a solo artist began in 2007 with the release of his first album "In Gumbo" on the New York based label Plant Music. Since then, Live At Robert Johnson, Mule Musiq, Permanent Vacation, Compost Music, Correspondant, Eskimo and hfn Music have all released his work - and Nicolas Jaar, Roman Flügel, Tensnake or Prins Thomas are on the roster of artists who's been charge of remixing Kasper's music.
 
His highly collaborative, ambient and neo-classical project "Kasper Bjørke Quartet" had its debut album release in 2018 on Kompakt Records with "The Fifty Eleven Project" and the sophomore "Mother" saw the light in 2022 - "a six composition LP that hints at earth’s resilience, and the promise of another chapter".
 
If you follow Kasper regularly on social media you will certainly know about his concerns and commitment to raising awareness about climate change. That commitment has since 2018 led him to play mainly European DJ gigs reachable by train, downscaling his touring activities to a minimum with the intention to lower his carbon output substantially.
 
In 2023 our fourth guest on SOULMEEX PRO has been focusing on establishing his own new ambient platform, Sensitive Records, releasing two EPs: "Junctures" with Cooper Saver and "Night Soul EP" together with El Agua Es Profunda - as well as recording a brand new album that will be released in 2024.

Kasper also found time to do the score for the latest Nike Lebron XXI film. Making music for advertisement might be one of his less known facets.

The Hidden Force / De Stille Kracht

Danish producer @kasperbjorke is what I would consider a true good guy on multiple levels. Not only is he one of the finest DJs around, he’s also dropping great and surprising releases on a regular basis for almost two decades now, he’s also a vocal artist when it comes to political topics. Especially environmental topics and the health of our dear planet is as equally close to Kasper’s heart as it is to mine. I consider him a brother in spirit when it comes to these things… well, and our mutual love for Balearic beats. So, obviously… I’m thrilled that he participated in my little mixtape project. His “Messy Mix” was inspired by (and compiled during) a recent train ride between Berlin and Copenhagen since Mr. Bjørke’s avoids flying as often as he can. The result is a soothing and wonderful listening experience. 

Here’s how he describes his approach:

“I always feel at my best when I am accompanied by music, in almost anything that I do. I lean on music to contemplate, to work and to dream, when cooking or cleaning, playing with my children - or when traveling, gazing through the window of a train moving through the constant changing landscapes. Mixtapes can come in handy in many occasions and have been a thing I have practiced since my teenage years. I got in the mood for making this particular mixtape during a train journey going back home from Berlin to Copenhagen, after a weekend with two club gigs. 

Going home after gigs often makes me listen to quite soothing tracks that can act as a comforting mental pillow, after days of being around new people, loud music and a disrupted sleeping pattern. There are some beats in there too to bring the journey forward too and the mix include tracks are some of my favorites, some are new and some that have stayed with me over the years… I have also added one track from my latest album Puzzles, which came out a few weeks ago. I suggest you put on this mixtape when you are going on your next journey. May it be inwards or somewhere physically.”

Apart from that, I think it also works great as a relaxing mix to welcome the spring season so you don’t necessarily need to be on a train to enjoy this sweet selection. GuduMix059: Prom Night

Andrew Pekler was born in 1973 in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. His family immigrated to the United States in 1980 and since 1995 he has resided in Germany. His approach to music and sound is based in experimentation with found materials, be they samples, instruments or genre conventions. Pekler's latest work, Tristes Tropiques is an album of synthetic exotica, pseudo-ethnographic music and unreal field recordings.  

On his piece titled "Description of an Island" Pekler describes it as "A collage of synthetic field recordings and narration pertaining to the phenomenon of phantom islands – islands that appeared on maritime charts and maps (some until very recently), but whose existence has never been verified."
