It's mind blowing for me to realise that it is almost exactly 20 years since Porcupine Tree made their first ever live appearance, at a small club called the Nag's Head in High Wycombe, UK on the 4th December 1993. To commemorate the anniversary here is a recording from the archives of the first song played at that first ever show, the Van Der Graaf Generator / Dead Can Dance sampling, David Gilmour meets The Orb fusion of Voyage 34 (years before he did actually collaborate with The Orb!), the birth of PT as a band and a performing entity.  It was recorded straight from the mixing desk so the balance is a bit strange, but actually considering how nervous we must have all been, it's not bad at all.

The LSD trip is a pilgrimage far out beyond your normal mind, into that risky and revelatory territory which has been explored for thousands of years by mystics and visionary philosophers.

Well I never think that when I'm twenty-one, I'm twenty-one - I think of tomorrow or this minute...
And hope there's a tomorrow, 'cause I don't like what's going on in the world. I'm scared of that, more than drugs. I'm not afraid of them...
I'm just... I'm just scared you know?

We're told that perhaps a million Americans, most of them young people, have made the LSD experience part of their lives. Is this a social menace and a cause for alarm?
I don't think so. I see nothing less than the speedy evolution of a new, indigenous religion.

I'm just... I'm just scared you know?
Everybody is... pretty uptight.

I'm just... I'm just scared...you know?

The LSD religionist knows; that the temple of worship is the human body, that the shrine must be located, not in a public place, but in the privacy of your own home, and that the congregation cannot extend beyond your family and your closest friends...

...And then the paintings on the walls were dripping. You know...you could see the paint coming down like this, just like if somebody was hosing it off at the top and all the paint was running down onto the floor. And it was so pretty...they were running. Like they were melting! It was groovy...

It was like a... it was like a massage. It was so... it was so groovy, you can't believe how groovy... it wasn't just water hitting you, taking a shower, soap and out you go, you know, towel off. It was just... oh wow! You know it was like... it was like... it was like a caress. You know kind of... and you could really feel the hot and the cold. You could feel hot "hot" and cold "cold", you know and... and each little drop that came out was a different one, you know... it wasn't... I don't think the water must mix inside. It must come out hot and cold or something, 'cos you could feel hot cold hot cold all over you. It was really groovy.
I guess... it was... I guess the word for it is sensual... you know just... your body just oh! It grooved!

For psychedelics are stimulators of ideas and feelings, but generally these ideas and feelings would express themselves constructively rather than violently or destructively.

If it were possible during a riot to spray small doses of LSD from a helicopter into the air... People would soon quieten...

Is this trip really necessary?...

After the worldwide acclaim generated by the 2014 anthemic rock release Magnolia, The Pineapple Thief returns with its most ambitious studio album to date, Your Wilderness (featuring Gavin Harrison on drums throughout).

Musically, the band’s 11th studio album represents a marked change in direction and takes TPT away from Magnolia’s more ‘pop’ orientated production. On Your Wilderness, the band has allowed itself -plus a dream team of contributors - to perform without any inhibitions. Bruce Soord has drawn inspiration from his Progressive roots in order to provide a springboard for the ongoing creative growth of The Pineapple Thief. 

For the first time, The Pineapple Thief has brought in several special guest performers, alongside Gavin Harrison (who has gifted some typically brilliant drum parts that have taken TPT into fresh territory), and a four-piece choir, Geoffrey Richardson (Caravan) arranged and recorded string sections, Darran Charles (Godsticks) contributed additional electric guitar work, and Supertramp’s John Helliwell performs some beautiful clarinet parts that bring the album to a poignant close. 

Featuring conceptually sympathetic Carl Glover artwork, lyrically Your Wilderness follows the journey of a parent and child and chronicles love, fear, estrangement and, ultimately, reconciliation as their lives unfold.  

Your Wilderness was recorded, mixed and engineered at Soord Studios in Somerset and was produced by The Pineapple Thief (with the exception of the drums, which Gavin Harrison produced & engineered).

The mastering was by The Pineapple Thief’s own Steve Kitch (audiomaster.co.uk).

Seen as one of the most vital Rock bands the UK has produced over the last two decades, The Pineapple Thief was formed in 1999 by founder and chief songwriter Bruce Soord and has continued to evolve and refine its sound throughout its existence.

Bruce Soord has also collaborated with the likes of Wisdom Of Crowds (with Katatonia’s Jonas Renkse), Katatonia (joining the band on its 2014 acoustic European tour), and has created 5.1 remixes for artists such as Opeth, TesseracT, Tim Bowness and Katatonia.

Soord released his debut self titled debut solo album through Kscope in 2015.

The Pineapple Thief is currently booking a European tour for late 2016 and planning live shows in USA / Canada

In Absentia is the seventh studio album by Porcupine Tree, first released on 24 September 2002. The album marked several changes for the band, with it being the first with new drummer Gavin Harrison and the first to move into a more heavy metal and progressive metal direction, contrary to past albums’ psychedelic and pop rock sounds.

While not a formal concept album, many of the songs still have common themes related to serial killers, youthful innocence gone wrong, and criticisms of the modern world. The album’s title is also tied into this, with the phrase being Latin for “in absence” or “in one’s absence”, often in reference to a person’s rights when mentally unable to be represented in court in legal situations. Wilson said of the title:

“It comes from… It’s related to some of the lyrics. It’s about people on the fringes, on the edges of humanity and society. I have an interest in serial killers, child molesters, and wife beaters… Not in what they did, but in the psychology of why. What caused them to become unhinged and twisted? Why are they unable to empathise? It’s sort of a metaphor – there’s something missing, a black hole, a cancer in their soul. It’s an absence in the soul.”

Porcupine Tree - Trains (from In Absentia)

Deadwing is the eighth studio album by Porcupine Tree, released on 28 March 2005. The album is based on a screenplay written by Steven Wilson and Mike Bennion, and is essentially a ghost story. Wilson had expressed the intention to eventually have this film script made into a movie.

The album produced two singles, “Shallow” and “Lazarus”. The album also produced three music videos for “Lazarus”, “Start of Something Beautiful”, and “Glass Arm Shattering”.

The album includes collaborations with King Crimson’s Adrian Belew, who plays guitar solos on the title track “Deadwing” and “Halo”, and Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt, who adds vocal harmonies on “Deadwing”, “Lazarus”, and “Arriving Somewhere But Not Here”. He also plays the second guitar solo on “Arriving Somewhere But Not Here”.
