Description: Noumenah is the electronica project of Los Angeles-based composer/producer Andrew John Napier. Drawing from an eclectic pool of influences, Napier creates music of a vibrant timbral facade undergirded by more traditional tonal and rhythmic structures. Today I am joined by Randall Taylor who makes music under the name Amulets. Taylor’s music sits at the edge of a few genres, ambient, drone, post rock, and noise, but what interests me most about Amulets is his process. Taylor repurposes old cassettes and tape players, tinkering with their circuitry and using them to create haunting looping drones. He also details this process extensively on his YouTube and Instagram pages, where he posts short improvisations on his manipulated gear. i wanted to talk to Taylor about how he developed this style of music making, his transparency about his work on social media, and his terrific new record Blooming, out on The Flenser on April 2nd.

Following its premiere on BBC 6 Music by Mary Anne Hobbs, Douglas Dare shares the playful new single 'The Joy In Sarah's Eyes', taken from his forthcoming album 'Milkteeth'.

Drawing on a unique gift for writing songs that encapsulate and explore the innocence and simplicity of childhood, ‘The Joy In Sarah’s Eyes’ showcases Douglas’ honest and soul bearing reflection of his formative years. Composed using the autoharp – a new discovery for the multi-instrumentalist – the track draws on indie and folk influences resulting in a Jeff Buckley-esque ballad for a new generation.

Speaking on the track, Douglas explains: “I realise now that Sarah is the child in me; she is the innocent and pure joy that we all have as children that often is lost with age. Remembering this joy and keeping it with you can literally keep you alive, keep you vital.”

Released on February 21, 'Milkteeth' is Douglas' most stripped back album to date. Produced by Mike Lindsay — founding member of Tunng and one half of LUMP with Laura Marling — 'Milkteeth' sees Douglas become confident and comfortable enough with his own identity to reflect on both the joys and pains of youth. In doing so, he has established himself as a serious 21st century singer-songwriter with an enduring lyrical poise and elegant minimalist sound.

Marking his arrival in 2014 with the release of his acclaimed debut 'Whelm' and establishing his musical dexterity on the much darker follow up 'Aforger' in 2016, Dare’s star keeps growing. In 2017 he was asked to contribute a re-interpretation of 'Dance Me to the End of Love' to the Leonard Cohen exhibition 'A Crack in Everything' at the Contemporary Art Museum of Montréal, currently showing at The Jewish Museum in New York before opening at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco in September 2020. He was invited by Robert Smith to perform at his Meltdown Festival at the Southbank Centre in 2018, followed by the David Lynch-curated Manchester International Festival alongside Anna Calvi in 2019.

Andrew is a film composer based in Los Angeles who started creating and releasing music under the name Noumenah as a way of expressing musical ideas and techniques that didn’t fit into his professional life. Drawing from an eclectic blend of electronic genres and acoustic instruments, Andrew’s music is rich with sonic detail. During our conversation, Andrew and I discussed the recording process for Noumenah’s first album, how his background in film scoring shaped the project, and where he plans on taking the project next.
