@almanegramusic have built a brilliant reputation over the last few years with a string of impressive releases via the likes of Basic Fingers, Lumberjacks In Hell, Heist and their own Alma Negra label. Fusing sounds from across the globe with modern electronica they have very much created their own sound which is frenetic and exciting as well as being infinitely danceable. Combining their love of hip-hop and Chicago House with the colourful sounds of Latin America and Africa they have become a real stand out in the electronic edges of world music.

Their latest release see's them back on their own Alma Negra imprint with the 'Zouk Combat EP' featuring three original tracks and another LV favourite Bosq on the remix. Paying homage to the Afrodisco sounds of the 80s it's a wonderfully connective EP bringing those sounds right up to date for the 2021 dancefloor. It's another huge string in the Alma Negra musical bow.

Sean McCabe created the label Good Vibrations in 2016, mirroring the vibe of his successful Bristol based events he runs with local legend Deli-G. The labels sound is deep rooted in soul, spanning jazz and electronica, African rhythms, broken beats, disco vibrations, hip-hop and Latin flavours. Good Vibrations has been a successful platform for Sean’s own releases, as well as his collaborations with artists like Black Sonix, Hannah Khemoh, Mike City, Lem Springteen, and Harold Matthews Jr. The label has released remixes by MAW legend Louie Vega, Frankie Feliciano, IG Culture, Groove Assassin, Jovonn and 95 North.

 

Next up is Harold Matthews Jr with a five track album sampler entitled ‘Peripheral Vision’. It crosses genres providing a reflection of Harold’s passion for song writing and spoken word, alongside a host of guest producers and vocalists.  Chicago-based Harold wrote his first releases in the early 90’s with legends like Ron Trent, Terry Hunter, Maurice Joshua and Ron Carroll, with songs like ‘Ritual Of Love’ and Barbara Tucker’s ‘I Get Lifted’. Throughout the late 90’s he was well known under his Blak Beat Niks moniker with production partner K. Fingers and their releases on PAN Records. He had outings on the mighty Large Music, and his own label Melodious Fonk. Further projects followed with Slip N Slide, Mark Knight, Peppermint Jam, Glenn Underground, Makin’ Moves and Sean McCabe.


‘Deep Into My Sleep’ opens with Cardiff’s Black Sonix, and Harold’s sublime vocal that provides the narrative to the afro tinged beats.  ‘Put Your Hands Together’, with its driving beats and explosion of synths, is a subtle nod to the Trax era, and for those who prefer their analogue grooves. ‘Into You’ brings vocalist Dawn Williams onboard for a lazy, hypnotic, and sumptuous slice of house, while Cardiff-based producer DJ Fill shifts up the groove with ‘Pause’.  This track oozes with soul but with a hip hop meets broken beat vibe, peppered with Rhodes, arps and a bassline that just won’t let go!  Harold and Syl Messi going head-to-head on lyrics. The title track closes this sampler and features rap and production from Chicago’s ‘Nickel Slick’ on a mission to rebuild and re-educate through the power of lyrics. It’s a heartfelt track with a strong and relevant message for today’s testing times.

This is probably one of most significant projects of the Fall season (last quarter of 2025).  Been working on Black Peaches for some time now along with another "bonus" EP coming up soon.  I wanted to compile several vibes that eases the soul, a type of afro rhythm / beat mixed in with some newer style genres (ethereal, house, and hip hop); you'll definitely hear a couple of nostalgic keys.  Album will be available on Bandcamp Friday (Oct 3) as well.
