NovaFuture Blog: Streams (Part 1)

If you like your techno bruised and bleeding, you’d have taken note of Manchester’s AnD. Over the last few years they’ve been making their presence known with a series of unbridled releases for labels like Horizontal Ground, Black Sun Records, Repitch Recordings and their own self-titled stable. “Harder” has indeed been the duo’s mantra, bellowed stony-faced from the rasping recedes of industrial’s brittle outer rim. But it hasn’t always been this way. Before the broken bones and caustic, pitch-black tear-outs there’s been deep and dubby reprieves, techy dubstep and even washed-out drum and bass on the likes of Idle Hands, Project Squared and Hidden Hawaii all with equaled astuteness.

It’s clear there’s little out of AnD’s reach, and they’re certainly not bowing down to anyone. ‘Kundalini’ then, AnD’s debut EP for Electric Deluxe, is not something to be taken lightly. The EP opens with a trio of patented AnD-style monsters, cataclysmic techno siblings all venomous and rusted through. It’s a dark and unforgiving trail with these guys as drill sergeant, until “ICDBYC” that is. Not quite the calm before the storm, here we have AnD pull back from the bloody onslaught to turn a cleaner, more calculated sort of weapon. Cool and tactical shadow skulking, trimmed with IDM. This one is just as deadly!

The rise of Lehar continues. Together with his brothers in mind Musumeci and Olderic, he has recently formed a highly visible team closely connected to Connaisseur and reinforced by their new weekly radio-show "The Sound Of Connaisseur“ o n Ibiza Global Radio. Now it is time for new music. After his tremendous debut EP "Sargas“ and his uber-remix for Of Norway feat. Linnea Dale’s "Spirit Lights“, he presents his next strike with the 4-tracker "Flora & Zephyr“. Named after the mythological love couple Flora, the Sabine-derive goddess of fowers and of the season of spring and her husband Zephyr, son of the titans Astraios und Eos, Lehar wanted to transport this passion- and romantic-laden story into his new release.

With the beatless intro track "In Ipnosi“ Lehar kicks off the release. A wonderful hypnotic affair with strong synths and shimmering percussions.

Next up is the majestic "Zephyr", a real titan of a track, with a strong groove and demanding chords. It has a cleansing and meditational impact, letting you dream while triggering an inner and outer movement.

On the fip-side, with "Horizon“ Lehar presents a collaboration with Musumeci, who just got ennobled as "The future of Italian House Music“ by Kristian from Âme for his other project combo "Human Machine“. From the beginning you can make out Musumeci’s infuence on this track, as his music never overladen. It has a clear approach with a strong recognition value, which may be the secret to his success. Each element of "Horizon“ remains in your mind after having listened to it. A guarantor for this summer, for sure.

The closing title of this EP is "Flora", a timeless and alluring cut with a dub-techno approach. Its subtle power comes from its deepness. It is simple but full of universal brilliancy.

The classy @Caduceus-Records puts together a new 4 track vinyl with some style. Enlisting @OliverDeutschmann for original material, along with @MarkusSuckut and @JeroenSearch on remix duty.

It was hard to pick a favourite from such a stunning collection, but Jeroen’s rework captured a real honesty and deceptively laid-back groove that has flashes of tension. The organic progression and subtle sample additions keep it moving with never a dull moment. A deep and hypnotic twist on the original, it emphasises certain elements and lights it up magnificently.

An extraordinary figure in the second generation of Techno producers to emerge from the electronic music explosion of the late 1980s and early 1990s, Cari Lekebusch has sustained over twenty years in music through an unwavering commitment and an unquenchable desire to constantly move things forward. Credited as being the figurehead of the globally influential Swedish Techno scene that subsequently spawned internationally recognized names such as Adam Beyer, Alexi Delano, Joel Mull and Jesper Dahlback, Lekebusch's standing as a studio innovator and production authority is well documented. He has borne many pseudonyms over the course of his illustrious career including; Fred (Missile Records), Mr Barth (Svek, Plumphouse), Braincell (Harthouse) and his electro moniker Mystic Letter K, to name a few. He has experimented with sounds across a range from Techno to Electro; releasing on well respected labels such as Drumcode, Truesoul, Novamute, Soma, Primevil, Harthouse, Missile, Turbo, Mote Evolver, 430 West, ISL, Sleaze, Svek, CLR and his own label imprint H-Productions (former Hybrid Productions).

When still in high school he started his own imprint H-Productions, to ba able to always have an uncompromised platform for his most personal experiments. The label has since 1986 featured an impressive array of extraordinary sound architects from around the globe and has undergone many changes, that obviously are a reflection of Cari's own desire to develop as a producer.

Coining the term sound architect to describe his work as a performer, Cari is an instinctive and imaginative DJ with a distinctive style that has earned him a loyal and intelligeble fan base. Invited as a regular guest to many of the premier Techno clubs and events across Europe, Asia, North and South America, Cari is most at home playing closing sets that snake between full on peak time exuberance and ever so slightly off the wall deepness.

Slam deliver yet another on point release for Soma as the duo drop the Signifies EP. Stuart and Orde have been on fire of late with not only their releases doing the damage but with a string of gigs across the continent and their own Pressure events in their hometown of Glasgow going from strength to strength, the pair seem unstoppable at the moment. This latest EP once again shows great depth in their production going from hard- hitting techno to stripped back and jacked up machine funk.

Structure kicks things off and Slam state their intent on this one as one mean sounding hook plays the main role alongside fairly punishing drums. Title track Signifies is up next with yet more intelligently made patterns used a little more subtly but with no less impact. Functional closes out the EP and takes things a little deeper with is simple yet effect and pumped percussion striding across a tweeked out vocal sample.
With this huge release, Slam once again maintain their claim as being one of the most innovative acts in electronic music right now.

REPITCH returns with a strong 4-tracker EP from the high-acclaimed British duo AnD, enhanced by a remix that comes from Semantica's boss Svreca. The release starts with a catchy Techno track that got its strength in an endearing melody and a reassuring breath-alike sound that bring us positive vibes. In the A2, Svreca puts the A1 track into a black tunnel. Claustrophobic atmospheres, blind and disorienting sounds with a circular attitude that you'll not see the end. On the flip, the B1 would be the pick for those who want to destroy a dancefloor. 
Straight and distorted beats are followed by sinister whistles, pressing and complex hi-hats layers culminating in a punishing melody. The last track of the release is one of the simplest but effective innovations since a while: a piano song intubated into compressors, distortors, delay and reverb that starts to assume a rhythmic asset from the middle to the end.
