Hi and welcome to Issue 02 of the Technozine.
 
In this issue, we have insane mixes from Minimum Syndat, Ethan Fawkes and Helrad. Premieres that range from hi-octane techno to electro from Soma Records' new sub label, and label profiles and interviews with some of the main characters of the UK movement. Lastly, we focus on a campaign close to our hearts - Good Night Out and speak to founder Bryony.

Clergy has become synonymous with a balance of atmospheric and hard hitting brand of techno ever since 2014. The boss's own music has been key to that, with carefully curated releases from guests such as Dax J, Kwartz, Reflec and Cleric himself. Helping to make the label an underground favourite. ‘Clergy Visions 01’ sees Cleric invite an array on techno heavyweights to contribute to this compilation that’s mixed by the label boss himself.

Kander - Insight

Markantonio is back on his label AnalyticTrail with a jaw dropping techno remix of talented French artist Angioma who provides the original tracks.

Although born in France, Angioma is currently living in Barcelona where he has become a regular DJ on line-ups in the citys vibrant club scene.

Angioma is still early in his career and he joins AnalyticTrail having previously featured on Christian Smiths Tronic and Anja Schneider's Sous Music.

AnalyticTrail label owner Markantonio helped pioneer techno in Italy, and has headlined clubs all over the world, along with featuring music on labels ranging from Drumcode to Second State and Intec.

The original mix of Reverberate opens the EP with stabbing chords and fast-flowing percussion rhythms soon joined by dramatic vocal textures. Adding to the intensity of the original mix is the remix from Markantonio, whose harder remix of Reverberate has a hammering kick, plus throbbing synths that ramp up the tension.

Closing the EP is the deep and jazzy Ostenious which has fluttering melodies layered amidst dark atmosphere and tough percussion. True to the classic techno sound of Detroit, this track fuses timeless elements with modern sound design.

This issue, we feature the premiere of Teokad's 'Something Like That’ taken from the the brand new 4 part VA compilation from Fluctuat Records. We grabbed a quick chat with label boss Jules aka Coqman.

Hey Jules, tell us about the concept of new compilation? And the featured premiere track by TAOKAD?

Hello Ray, thanks for opening a space to talk about Fluctuat Records!
Indeed, we are celebrate our second anniversary. A young age for a label, but I think we have achieved something pretty nice during that time. As you know, I founded the label in Medellin where i lived about 4 years. 

Colombia's Techno scene is really strong. Probably one of the best in South America. So the idea behind Fluctuat was to connect our two continents with the music. We have received lots of European producers here, and at the end of 2019 we were able to bring some Colombian & Argentinan artists from the label on a European tour with some nice gigs in France and Germany.

This year, for obvious reasons it's a little more complicated to do the same, but we still had to celebrate our anniversary decently! So I asked all our members to send us music for this big VA. This time I also wanted to include other talented producers that I've worked or played with in the past. 

After receiving so many good tracks we end up with more than 40 artists half from E.U. and half from Latin America haha!!

One of them is Théo aka TEOKAD. He is part of the French collective MIKROKOSM (alongside our friend DICA, also on the label). That's one of the crews I collaborate with a lot. They are really good producers and promotors. If you cross the channel, you'll end up in French Brittany where they are living and organising crazy parties - high BPM and 303 are the foundation of it as you can hear on that massive tune called "Something Like This". 

I hope you'll enjoy it a lot. It will be release the 30th with 11 other bangers!

PREMIERE: TEOKAD - 'Something Like That'

We begin Issue 02 with French label and live duo Minimum Syndicat, who recorded a rare DJ set. Ray caught up with them for a chat earlier this week...


Hey guys thank you for the mix! Being predominantly a live act, does that reflect on how you put a mix like this together?

MS : I think we approached it in the same way, we try to build our live performances : with a narrative, story-telling and quality. It means different styles and moods, more introspective parts vs full-on sonic onslaughts etc. Also we don't fear to lower the intensity level for a while if it serves the story. Which would be riskier in a gig context...

>Is there a contrast in the sounds and atmosphere you aim to create when playing a club gig compared to the larger events like Soenda and Awakenings?

MS : Not really, i think our sound can work in both contexts. Of course we have tracks that have that big arena feel, but we learnt that even small basements can be turned into a rave cathedral with the right sound system, music and people... or maybe your own home during quarantine ?

>We are loving your recent Underground Activities EP, can you give us hint about any other forthcoming releases on your label and any other new minimum syndicat releases or remixes we should look out for? 

MS : Glad you like it ! Actually we were finishing our first full lenght album before this covid-19 shit hit Europe. Now we'll have to wait for better times to give it the proper release it deserves. We have also some remixes and tracks to come on different labels. Schedules are totally messed up now, so we'll see how it comes.

Jaded Technozine is hyped to present the premiere of Kaylah’s track ‘Blue Mitsubishi’ forthcoming on his new Trialz EP – ‘Too Old To Die Young.’ As you’d expect from 2020’s fiercest up and comer, it’s a banger all the way through, bolstered by savage remixes from Kenny Campbell and Distra. We caught up with Trialz co-founder Duellist to find out how Kaylah caught his ear and what’s going on for the label...

JADED: Trialz01 ‘Anomaly Of A Broken Structure’ seems to set out the mission and tone of the label, particularly with the track from you and (co-founder) Axel. Did you achieve all you were hoping for with that first release and how difficult was it to bring all your chosen artists together?

DUELLIST: It was really interesting how everything came together for the labels 1st release, as Axel being the owner of Mindcut and knowing so many talented artists the challenge was to set out to have something completely different. What I really enjoyed about setting up this V.A compilation (apart from getting to hear a lot of amazing music) is that it gave the label the opportunity to showcase a whole range of music as we wanted people to enjoy it in its complete entirety.

JADED: Kaylah’s ‘Too Old To Die Young’ is such a killer release all the way through. Kenny Campbell, Distra and Kaylah complementing each other brilliantly. Tell us about your connections with the guys?

DUELLIST: Yeah, this e.p is killer and I can see all tracks getting a lot of play out. I’ve known Kaylah the shortest amount of time out of the 3 artists, but I have been watched him go strength to strength so it was a no brainer to reach out to him and get him involved in the label, also what is also refreshing about him is that dealing with has been very easy as some artists that start to get some traction get a bit of an ego but he seems to be keeping it real and not getting carried away.

With Kenny, I got to know him through the scene up in Scotland, it started off with us both supporting what each other on what we were doing online and then just snowballed into working with each other on various projects, we just finished a track the other day that will be coming out on Scuderia.

Distra, I got to know through Variance Records and he has to be one of my top 3 favorite artists and it has been amazing that I’ve had the opportunity to play on the same line up each time I’ve been on tour in Japan, his live sets are probably one of the best that I’ve seen.

JADED: What’s next for Trialz and how do you feel about the energy of techno especially in the UK in 2020?

The schedule for Trialz is already full for this year and there are some amazing artists releasing with us that I’m really looking forward too. The next goal is to have the label though of in the same way as another label I respect such as Green Fetish and OBSCUUR.

I’m loving the vibe around the Techno at the moment I really feel that it has a similar feel of how the punk movement was in the 70s. When performing or going to a gig I notice that the people there are really interested in going to seeing the acts rather than just going to get wasted. It’s also good to see in the UK that promoters are trying to focus more on local or homegrown talent as for too long promoters have focussed on bringing international acts over but now we have a real chance to create our own scene again.

[Premiere] MSKD - Gods Aren't Ashamed ([MSKDR03])

Earlier this month, Ethan Fawkes released his follow up to 'Hoovers & Stabs' a futuristic 90's rave exploration entitled 'Direction Kepler-11'. At first listen, it's a cross between a sci fi film score and the seminal rave you daydream about time travelling to: A foray into every shade of 90s dance music that sounds fresh and challenging.

'Dive Into A Vortex' sets the scene, plunging the dance floor into a 90's evangelical dystopia complete with spoken word from Ethan that makes you wish you could conjure him up during one of his festival sets. 'Through A Nebula' has all the Fawkes elements we covet - crowd noise, 90s breaks, sirens and a broken rave-gospel vocal. 

Ethan is the master of his Rave EBM genre, so picking a favourite track is a bit like being asked to choose a favourite child. Ray is going for 'Beyond Wolf' - but we reckon any track you pick from this album will be the secret weapon that will elevate an exciting mix to memorable perfection. Speaking of legendary mixes, here he is with a beast for the Technozine.

Various Artist - Speed Bumps (CEILI 0.2)

Ceili curates another head-rush compilation of squirming, writhing, fizzling techno on 'Speed Bumps', the second VA on his self-titled imprint. This second edition takes a more alternative perspective on todays highly scattered electronic scene, dragging in smaller talents alongside more prominent names laying their hand to less-ordinary and a more scrunched sound palette. The 16 track compilation comes wound to a limited VA cassette across 90 minutes of unpopular techno-trash essentials from the seething opening A, to brain-dancing crunch, to the earthward closing B.

This time tripling in mass, the release pulls together a neat little gang of electronic cable-fiddlers. Speed Bumps contains a wide array of audio beat-science thanks to the 18 contributing artists pushing 2020’s headway techno.
