'An Embrace' is a collaborative project between the Bulgarian experimental music collective Amek and the German music label Vaagner.

The project was commissioned by Easterndaze, A Berlin based annual festival which fosters ties between Eastern & Western European labels through series of collaborative live shows.

This year, the 4th edition of the Festival had to be moved online due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a response to these new circumstances, Amek & Vaagner proposed a physical release titled 'An Embrace', inviting 8 artists from their respective regions to form duos and collaborate online, with each duo being asked to compose a piece inspired by the project's title.

In the end, 'An Embrace' became an ambitious effort that included multiple contributors and took months to complete, thus we are now proud to share the final result, which is comprised of a limited edition cassette tape featuring the four collaborative compositions, as well as a riso-printed zine which offers further insight into the participants creative processes, while also including additional poetry and texts by Jeremiah Carter, S. N., Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Krisztián Puskár and Stanimir Panayotov.

Maria Chavez is a pioneer of Abstract Turntablism, a self-described practice she developed under the guidance of Pauline Oliveros' Deep Listening. Born in Lima, Peru and raised in Houston, she cut her teeth as a DJ spinning techno and drum & bass, but the male chauvinism of that scene roused her to experiment further with the materiality of vinyl, using broken needles and non-musical sounds. Oliveros inspired her to ditch dance parties for improvisation with a single turntable, an artistic practice which has evolved to include installations, workshops, visual art, and curation. A true sound artist (she adamantly eschews the label “musician”), until recently, Chavez had released only one recording, 2004's Those Eyes Of Hers, focusing instead on her career as longform performance. But after beginning a medical sabbatical in 2019, which forced her to cease touring (a year before the rest of the world shut down), Maria began slowly releasing new recordings into the world. In this episode, we discuss recent and upcoming collaborations, her switch to using four turntables (with double needles), and staking out her rightful place in art history contra White supremacist power structures.

After ‘Cobraxine’, ‘Boogie Throb’, and the Ana Ott – released ‘Molochville’, Brecht Ameel (Razen/Ameel Brecht) gives us his new album under the Br’lâaB moniker ‘Other People’s Crimes’; a high-on-paranoia, pre-crime-surveillance narrative, constructed after hours in the studio from a combination of Ameel’s own recordings on a widely varied set of instruments, library music, flea-market broken vinyls and old cassettes. Part blind-overdub palimpsest-collage, part straightforward composition, the 10” contains both Br’lâaB’s loop constructions and tracks performed by the found audio phantom band called the Acid Boogie Quartet. Bearing more gritty layers of both sound and subtext than ever, the “Other People’s Crimes” EP stands as an artefact of wild paranoia and spy-thriller sonics, weaving vignettes of surveillance gone wrong, doublethink and confessional echolalia.

Police and thieves are in the streets, running wild with nosebleeds and ill will ids. Dial v for victim as the night horizon broods a neon luminol glow. Howling at the vortex, buried under blindfolds, vigilantes take to crime with fear and ketamines.
