Maneki Neko

홍대 상수도와 MI 에서 시작한 한국의 언더그라운드 클럽씬이 홍대 전역, 이태원, 강남은 물론 전국 대도시로 확산되면서 폭발적인 발전을 거듭한지도 거의 20년이 됐다. 이제는 세계적인 DJ들이 꼭 거쳐갈만큼 서울도 클러버들이 즐길수 있는 문화도시의 대열에 꼈다. 세계 여느 도시의 클럽발전사를 보면 점점 더 상업적으로 변모해가는 대형클럽형 유행 속에서 음악의 본질을 잃지 않는 양질의 놀거리는 도시의 아이콘으로 부상한다. 지난 20년 가까이 국내 클럽문화를 이끌어온 DJ 연준과 그의 크루들은 서울을 대표하는 클럽을 만들고자 Club MYSTIK에 모였다. 2011년 10월28일 오픈 예정인 MYSTIK에서는 국내에서 접할 수 없었던 음향과 비주얼 시스템은 몰론, 엄선된 Deep House, Tech House를 기반으로 한 정통 사운드를 접할 수 있다. 또 크루들의 세계적인 DJ들과의 협업을 통한 다양한 DJ 파티도 준비중이다.

Carl Slater is a talented visual artist from the UK who invited me to create a soundtrack for a looping installation piece he was going to put together.  The interesting challenge was making something on the music machines that sounded like a dj mix, but transitioned from ambient to full on techno and back to ambient within 15 minutes so it could continuously loop with the visuals.  A fun challenge to tackle!
Final audio mix was mastered by Joe Farr

Across The Atlantic Project, a thoughtful dialogue between installation and environment addresses the evolving function of the city. This is most effectively presented in Carl Slater’s ‘Echoic Candy (4-Bar)’. The work, consisting of projection and sound, is situated within Millennium Complex, previously incarnated during the 1980s and 1990s as the Warehouse nightclub. Placed in the middle of what would have been the dance floor, a projection loops a wide range of clips from stock footage to psychedelic imagery once used for the Warehouse’s own stage projections. The accompanying sound work incorporates audio recordings of parties held at the Warehouse in 1991, reworked by techno producer Paul Birken. Opposite the projection, another screen presents images exclusively drawn from video documentation of a club night however the footage is intentionally obscured by the artist. The work draws attention to the layers of time the work weaves together, paying homage to the collective experience the building contained only two decades before.

Derrick May is one of our main headliners at Rejected's Amsterdam Dance Event 2012 night at Studio 80, 18th of october.
Since my early dj days, I consider Derrick May as a huge inspiration, and in particular this dj set. Broadcasted live in 1996 from the legendary Chemistry night at Escape, Amsterdam. It was recorded from midnight radio by my partner in crime Edwin Oosterwal who borrowed me the cassette tape which I never gave back to him, which reminds me I should do that sometime soon.

In this mix, Derrick May shows us that in 1996 dance wasn't pigeonholed to one style or sound. He mixes Moodymann's groovy deephouse with Jeff Mills and Surgeon's raw techno. He goes from Donna Summer's disco to Tyree Cooper's jacking electronic funk, from Masters of Work's new york house to Ian Pooley's epic chord techno. All of this is mixed in a fast and skillful pace, a style that so clearly carries Derrick's signature.

There's some truly magical moments in this mix, how he get's out of Surgeon's 'Syllable' into Global Communication's 'Sensorama' at 1:09 leaves me speechless..

Even though by now I know most of the record he plays here, there's still a few I've been looking since the very first time I heard this mix. Would be great to get the tracklist completed, any help is greatly appreciated!

Nox is a machine-head techno producer and DJ who doesn’t dare define his music into any pigeon hole, much rather preferring to go against the rules and create whatever craziness comes to mind. His live act is filled with shuffled grooves, experimental grinding and freaky synth lines with his DJ sets being just as outlandish.

His experimentation began growing up in the 80’s, listening to the music from that era granted him access to his parents vast collection of C90 cassettes which he preceded to make faster and pitched up using high speed dubbing. He soon got into rave music when it emerged falling immediately in love with the vibe getting heavily into acts like RMB, Marusha and Hardsequencer. But this gave way once he heard the wonky Brighton techno sound by artists such as Subhead, Justin Berkovi and Cristian Vogel.

Stefan eagerly started making music at the age of 12 for a school project, this led to a great amount of eccentric experimentation over the next few years using many different approaches, keyboards and software resulting in his own unique sound developing quickly. He also started DJing around this time but didn’t stick with it too long, preferring to make his own music whereby a repeating cycle of buying synths, selling them, then buying more began, a process still on rotation today.

In 2008 he founded Schmob Recordings, originally a digital only net-label for putting out his own freaky music due to the inability of finding a label to call home for releasing his material, it’s now a fully-fledged techno label incorporating vinyl releases too ………… and he’s addicted to it.

Nox’s persistence in getting his sound out there has since paid off because he’s now appeared on many other labels including Fun In The Murky, Schubfaktor, Bump Foot and on remix duties on RIOT Radio Records after becoming one of the winners in The Horrorist remix context we ran. He also plays live in clubs, however, very rarely due to the amount of equipment he uses. But when he does play live, and you’re a witness to it, you’ll not soon forget the experience.
