The word "fractal" is derived from fractus, or the Latin verb frangere, meaning to break.  It denotes a pattern created from parts that are smaller replicas of the whole pattern, which are themselves created from parts that are smaller replicas of the whole pattern.  Fractals exhibit similar patterns at increasingly small scales called "self-similarity", also known as expanding symmetry or unfolding symmetry.  Fractal features can be found in many forms of nature, including: clouds, coastlines, crystals, mountain ranges, snowflakes and many other natural phenomena.

For strings, woodwinds, piano, harp, marimba, celeste, percussion with field sounds and synthesized sounds from nature.
