After his latest ‘Youth EP’ that experimented with spacious vocal chops and whimsical soundscapes, Nocow returns with a relentless flurry of blows on the heavily computerized ‘Magnit EP’ to be released on npm sub-label, p-ertönen. Featuring gloriously broken melodies and hard-hitting rhythm,Nocow explores the darker, more formulaic side to his sound. Brooding acid-infused synths shimmer across the four tracks, morphing between moods as the EP progresses.

‘Magnit S’ kicks off the EP with scattered bass hits, driving dark techno arpeggios, and a hint of footwork-esque percussion. The intense atmosphere is a relatively new direction for Nocow, straying from his more meticulous, introverted beats prior. ‘Kali’ incorporates warbled synth with a more subdued rhythm, playing with a modular sound and distant echoes of robotic vocals. This fragmented track is more akin to his 2018 sound of the Voda/Vozduh/Zemlya trilogy as the kinetics of sound play a strongly defined role in the overall sonics.

‘Sputnik’ commences with a blistering arpeggio of bit-crushed synth and chimes. The rocket-propelled pacing creates a frantic, yet ultimately controlled piece, worthy of a place in a club 300 years from now.

Yet, after the frenzy comes the calm. The closing track ‘Extasy’ grinds the EP to a kaleidoscopic halt. Vocoder passages drift across the dense soundscape as Nocow transports you to an other-world, filled with spacey percussion. This closer is a well-deserved return to solid ground, following the perpetual trio of dark, yet utterly compelling techno pieces. Once again, Nocow exhibits his multi-faceted approach to electronic music that truly sets him apart.

Hard work can pay off. Just ask Elisa Bee. The Sardinian producer and DJ has been working diligently since 2007, exploring and then refining a style of techno that has that rare, hard-to-put-your-finger-on quality: a soulful reverence, paying homage to the old days and the originators without just copying them. She struck it (relatively) big with an EP on Unknown To The Unknown in 2019 and has since become a fixture on labels like Hardgroove, Symbiosis and Balkan Vinyl, imprints that specialize in a kind of meat-and-potatoes techno that underlines both the fundamentals and subtle innovation. She's also a resident at Milan's Tempio Del Futuro Perduto, which she talks about at length in the interview below.

Now, in 2023, Elisa Bee is part of a vanguard of younger techno producers who carry the flag for the '90s without resorting to pastiche or the bigger-is-better aesthetic of much of the rest of the contemporary European techno landscape. Her RA Podcast is as buttery smooth as it is propulsive, flying through tracks from like-minded artists like Austin Ato, Nocow and Black Girl/White Girl. Sleek, vintage and futuristic all at once.

Through live instrumentation and spacey interceptions of synth, @tarot-plane presents an enchanting collection of tracks in ‘Murmuration’. Cycling through the traditional sounds of flute and guitar with bubbling electronics, an interwoven dynamic is established between the serene and exploratory. With an extensive catalogue of new age, krautrock, and ambient fusions on previous projects ‘Horizontology’, ‘The Ektachrome Dawn’, and ‘Light Self All Others’, Tarotplane continues to redefine his sound with charming character. ‘Papilionidae’ opens with a curious interplay between whining flutes and vast soundscapes, cut-up by thrusts of bird-like drones. The track acts as a pacifying opener, unfolding into a medley of synth leads and stuttered, blissful keys on ‘Descartes Camera’. Hypnotic patterns echo throughout ‘Murmuration’, continuing into Side B as fluttering sparks of electronics and heavy bass tones accelerate the project. ‘Murmuration’ becomes intense, and more rooted in electronic synthesis with the cosmic sound palette becoming ever-present. The strong sense of narrative is clear and mesmerising, with each sound adopting discernible characteristics. The gentle destruction of tones generates an impossibly vast space. The closing track, ‘Kappa and Sender’, ends the project with a distorted vocal passage struggling free from the sticky, extra-terrestrial soundscape. The track stimulates an intoxicating call-and-response feel, bundling Tarotplane’s seemingly.

PREMIERE⚡️Tarotplane - Papilionidae [npm]

Orlando Voorn's ear for energy is hugely celebrated across Detroit dance music. Reaching legendary status working with the likes of Juan Atkins and Blake Baxter, Orlando continues to invigorate with his playful styles of house and techno.

In his latest ‘Slasher EP’ on p-ertönen, Voorn sets the scene for night-dipped cruises and mesmeric subterranean clubs. Acid-infused basslines and thunderous drums rocket through the three tracks, beginning with ‘Funky Bastard’, a tasteful blend of arps and shuffling percussion. Classic sounding rises and falls populate the track, playing to Voorn’s strengths of pure Detroit rhythm.

‘Slasher’ is a violent counterpart. Wobbles of synth battle the violent drum beats in a hyper-dense match-up, showing Voorn is not afraid to experiment. The beautifully chaotic track feels intimate, while maintaining a distinct other-worldly quality.

Voorn rounds off the EP with a witty fusion of vocal chops and piano trills, welcoming play into his sonic palette. Echoed horns skip around the hard-hitting kicks with clinical precision and masterful composition. Unavoidably groovy, ‘Da Music _Remix’ is a dance track for the people.

Limited vinyl copies will start selling in early June, alongside availability on major digital platforms. One copy per customer.

DEFTR, the newly formed alias of Answer Code Request and Jan Wagner, presents their debut album on npm, introducing a captivating fusion of ambient and techno. This collaborative project marks a departure from Answer Code Request's renowned 4/4 techno framework, venturing into expansive auditory realms enriched by Jan Wagner's classical expertise.

Spanning eight meticulously crafted tracks, DEFTR's debut album explores a spectrum of blissful and resonant soundscapes. The compositions unfold with a delicate balance of ambient textures and rhythmic innovation, punctuated by evocative vocal samples that enhance the album's atmospheric depth.

Having previously released three EPs that hinted at this innovative direction, DEFTR solidifies their unique sonic identity with this full-length release. The interplay between Answer Code Request's intricate rhythms and Wagner's ambient sensibilities creates a dynamic tension, resulting in a listening experience that is both immersive and transformative.

DEFTR's vision extends beyond the studio, aiming to bring their sound to life on stage with a focus on live performance elements, including drum machines and synths. While details of the debut album release show are forthcoming, Berlin is anticipated to host this significant event.
