Explicitly undefinable by genre, Maas employs a recurring sound palette that binds his compositions together as a cohesive body of work which is conducive in series. A founding member of production outfit 4 6 2 5, Maas’ obsession with hardware and outboard production kit is demonstrated by the warmth, body and sheer power of his work.

Cicadas and tides at Goat Island; waves and caves in Achmelvich; muddy geysers in Rotorua; Tui birds in Auckland and crickets in Leigh. Living in a city, where all the green spaces are manicured or grazed, it's easy to loose touch of the cycles and processes of life, that you can't touch or see, but are an integral part of. I think listening, locally and globally, can help us to become better guardians. Here are some sounds, mostly from Leigh in Northern NZ, where I recently moved to from Glasgow.

Cold air hangs thick in the early days of December, winter is here and we have a soundtrack to accompany the tone. 

Calibre is regarded as one of the most innovative and prolific producers within electronic music, over the years he has become a definitive figure in Drum & Bass, having elevated the genre in a way in which is celebrated and adored. Originating from Belfast he has recorded music which has tugged at the heartstrings, encouraging a new chain of thought associated with the sound. Albums like "Musique Concrete" and "Second Sun" remain some of the most crucial and important pieces of work to emerge from the Northern Irish producer and he is widely considered to be one of the most significant electronic artists of the past twenty years. 

At the tail end of last week Dominick Martin released a new album through his own imprint, Signature Records. It showcases a change of pace for the producer as he focusses on ambient textures and the poignancy of life. It was recorded across a four year period following the passing of a close friend and as such a sombre, humble sense of honest self expression runs throughout. Titled "Planet Hearth" the album was written in Valentia on Ireland's west coast. It's a beautiful record which highlights his own approach to music and offers an insight into the soul of a musician who has contributed so much. 

We are hugely honoured to be able to present a mix from Calibre which showcases ambient music, past and present.

I've always felt corny talking about my own music, but I'll say the older I get, the more proud (in a healthy way) I feel about being the breakbeat nerd that I am (to think of it, at some point I almost wanted to leave that style behind!), and in many ways the thanks for that goes to all you, my musical friends…your support and love for the stuff I do has been invaluable…so thank you.

There always was a lot more to bird watching than just watching. There's no need to be an ornithologist to simply notice that birds produce a vast variety of sounds. They tweet and chirp, hoot and caw, shriek and cry, cluck and crow. They clap their wings and peck wood, they rustle with leaves and gurgle with water. Some of them vocalize to communicate. Others are trying to imitate human speech, since us, human species, are always more or less around. Recent studies suggest that listening to birdsongs helps us to relieve stress and anxiety, so some of us simply listen and record these sounds. Others are trying to manipulate the recordings turning them into something completely new. There are also those who, in reverse, try to imitate birds with a variety of methods. The "birdstape" series is dedicated to the long history of human beings discovering the sonorous aspects of ornithology.
