Daria Lourd, aka Bored Lord, is a Memphis-born multidisciplinary artist. Daria formed roots in electronic music with production, notably her latest release on Knightwerk. Her DJing skill was defined when she joined forces with the underground rave community in Oakland, California.

Daria has been churning out club-ready, euphoric tracks on her personal Bandcamp, as well as contributing remixes for other artists and labels such as Eris Drew & Octo Octa’s T4T LUV NRG.

Welcome to the first volume of Sharing Plates—a new club-focused mix series from myself.

For the inaugural mix, I’ve recreated my set from last October’s day-to-night edition of Bleached Club at The Glove That Fits. I played downstairs from 7 til 8 PM with a loose brief of “hard and fast”. I immediately knew I wanted to move from 150 through 174 BPM—initially resetting the dance floor before steadily climbing up to modern 2-step drum & bass. Big tempo jumps are a tricky thing to balance without sacrificing flow, but I was feeling insanely inspired to try after a mad experience at Bang Face the weekend before.

Though I’d spun on radio and in record stores a couple of times, this was the first time I’d ever played in a club. Years before I even knew what DJs actually did, I’d always fantasised about playing to a proper dance floor. This was a real bucket list moment. 

In classic me fashion, I prepared by spending too many hours feverishly mixing at home with a rotating carousel of potential tracks, slowly arriving at a folder of music I felt confident in. Even if I don’t end up playing exactly the same tunes in exactly the same order as I do at home, something about knowing my exits allays the shaky pre-show jitters. 

For whatever reason that day, everything just sort of clicked. I got over my nerves really fast and locked in. It was the most fun I’d ever had playing and, bizarrely, as a fervent bedroom DJ, it was to a room full of people. 

Stupidly, I decided not to record the set that night. At the time, it was just another thing to worry about. Since then, though, I’ve found myself returning to that night with fondness. I decided to go back through my Rekordbox history and recreate the set I played that night, mixing as close to how the show actually flowed as possible.

Shouts out Karpo, FETCH* and the rest of the Bleached Club crew for inviting me to play. Having my debut club set be at such a wicked party will be a memory I’ll treasure forever.

🥸———————— this is an opening set I played about a year ago at our monthly sorry records party at bossa here in brooklyn. Kinda our first ever sorry party focused on “techno" with sets following this one from my friends DJ Anarres and Devoye. Have wanted to share this for a while but when it comes to the recording here its a bit wonky cause I accidentally set up the DJM-REC app to record via my phone's internal mic instead of the cord running from the mixer. 

Think the recording really captures Bossa in a beautiful way though. You can hear the sound of folks finishing up their happy hour hour drinks and chatting at the bar. There's plenty of cue button clicks and fader flicks as well as friends arriving and throwing their coats in the dj booth, me apologizing to the five people on the dance floor like thirty minutes in after I accidentally hit the synch button... The intermittent blast of the fog machine becomes less and less distinct as the club fills up gradually over the course of the two hours. Ed from Bossa asks me to send him our guestlist for the night and both Wawa and Eugene tell me to turn the volume up. A guy asks me for the name of a DJ Duke edit at one point and I think Ali Berger makes a brief appearance somewhere in there. 

Gotta be one of my favorite sets I’ve played over the last year and a half of monthly parties at Bossa - just paid for Soundcloud premium for my personal account here so reckoned I'd share it here if anyone's interested 🐣💨
