The 10 year celebration continues with a hybrid live recorded set from German dab hand Vril. Much of his work, like the metaphysical and culturally seminal substance from which he took the name, is heavy on duality, hard and gentle, vibrating with machinelike power and shot through with a raw and often tender emotion. It’s a calculation that has yielded some of the most unforgettable sounds of recent times, 2018’s heavy-hitting Anima Mundi or last year’s Animist have lost none of their soul-stirring resonance, and his purist techno reaches far beyond his published work. Live and in flow state, he carries just as strong a charge, a frothing, fulgurant techno that invokes awe and measures in colossal proportions. Leave aside collabs with Rødhåd and Sebastian Mullaert for Circle of Live, though the magic’s there too. It’s an arcane and ghostly sound that burrows into the soul and leaves its mark, and in his scores of fans and 51 toured countries, it has. Nuremberg’s Agy3na is up next in the Podcast roster with a call to explore his singular and nostalgic beats. The German selector got his break on his city’s dancefloors, and added experience as curator and organiser for a number of parties as part of a local promoter collective. Alongside his nighttime ventures, the fledgling talent has also been hard at work pursuing parallel studies in psychology and cognitive science, adding another layer to a varied set of inputs that has made his contributions to music all the more distinctive. There’s another layer too, his experience of blackness in Germany has brought him in contact with the world of Afrofuturism and the promise it brings, soundtracked now by a developing voice that packs a punch with its playful take on electro, house and 90s club culture. It’s music for the future, an aesthetic that plays with melody, percussion and fine-tuned technique to offer up a fresh take on old genres. In his new stomping ground of Leipzig, Dennis Höpfel blends music with research work and is sure to give the city something new and much needed. From set to set his thrashing rhythms have shown a sensitivity and awareness that’s deeply personal, a way of connecting with the world around him and giving something back.
