Cultures of Soul has been the source of some of our favorite international disco compilations recently, providing much-needed focus on incredible music of the '70s and '80s from places as far ranging as São Paulo, Guadeloupe and Mumbai. The Montevideo Connection (An exploration flight into the unknown 70s Uruguayan territory, 1976-1983). 

Another Le Clan Phonique (Ric Piccolo + Bubbling Minds) production! The always-intriguing Uruguayan scene, a country with a population of hardly 3 million people. There were only a few productions in the seventies, as you can imagine. However a small group of inspired and talented musicians gave us some of the finest recordings from the region. We are proud to feature a selection of those top-quality tunes. Please relax and enjoy!

Hawaiian time ~ Hotel Aporia drops on Cosmic Compositions 19th September ~ Vinyl / Digital

The record takes place within the projected setting of a tropical beachfront hotel. A space that the band uses to dive into the sounds of exotica, library music and fantasy pop, and weave luxurious moods of old Hollywood drama and Lynchian mystery into their sonic world. Using this imaginary landscape, the group found a tool in which to navigate their South Pacific identities - a theme central to the album.

Musica Macondo on Jazz FM with Tim Garcia Ft. Edna Martinez in the mix

Went into the crates to pull a few selections from the great jazz label Muse. Tried to stay away from some of the sample-favorites (no Walt Barr or Catalyst this time around). Instead, it's a journey into the a variety of styles and flavors, some creative and beautiful music made by a wide range of musicians in the 70s and early 80s. There's definitely another stack of records I wasn't able to include this round, so maybe a part two will be in the works for the future.

Pullin from the Stacks - Episode 143 (Muse Records Selections)

Plucked from an open mic by Grammy award winning producer James Poyser and quickly placed in the “right rooms”, guitarist and songwriter Ezekiel marries the melodies of the western world with the sounds of Africa. Born in West Philadelphia to Nigerian immigrants, he lives through a lens of liminality.

Influenced by his parents, Ezekiel developed a love for highlife music and traditional Afrobeat. He then consumed jazz and neo-soul. As a result, his music reflects a conversation in his soul between genres — deep drones gliding across bright chords, and a percussive bass, accented by chanting and lush tones.

Ezekiel challenges the objective definition of several genres backed by the rich sonic experience of Mell Starr and Eric Lau. The motifs of liminality and freedom -mental, social, and spiritual - are deeply woven into his forthcoming album Everything is Under Alarm slated to be released on December 4th, 2020
