As mentioned last week, there was no live show today due to the LB State basketball game that aired during our slot -- but no worries because Joe Kay dropped a 60 minute set of some stand out selects that he either just discovered, was holding onto, and rediscovered. We played back a few cuts from last week such as the intro track by Yung Gud! God this track is a bad one even Sango is opening up with it at his recent shows. 

We went to go check out Afta-1 at his first performance back since his hiatus which inspired us to include some of his tracks in here. Also, Carmack just lost his laptop this past week and we feel really bad considering all the gold that was on there. All good though, he is already on the verge of recreating a whole other level of music with more fire to his fuel. We'll be back next Saturday with the lovely ladies Kronika, Sasha Marie, & Eden.

Globally recognised as a major proponent within drum & bass, Bryan Gee’s long since made his mark on music. Frankly his name will forever be aligned with the d&b genre considering that he founded a seminal label, in V Recordings, and ran a seminal dance with his scene sculpting Movement party. As a label head, Gee’s helped bring through a slew of producers whose names are now also just as ingrained into the DNA of drum & bass - people like Roni Size, Krust and Die from Bristol and DJ Marky and XRS from Brazil – but, somewhat importantly, he’s also never let up. Running multiple labels at the same time (V, Liquid V, Philly Blunt and Chronic) whilst pulling numerous strings behind the scenes as a radio broadcaster, promoter, A&R and more, what’s always been obvious is his enthusiasm and deep seated love of the form.

Performing in Room Two alongside another musical legend, LTJ Bukem and a smothering of other talents on Friday 30th January, he’s kindly prefixed the event by making us a 45 minute mixtape that aims to reacquaint you with his style, warm you up for a week on Friday and learn you a little something in the process. Honestly, it’s testament to his career and his influence that he’s able to do all three and make it look - and feel - effortless.

When was the last time you listened to an actual ‘mixtape’? You probably think of one of the many mixes inhabiting our digital social spheres, which you might give a quick click or a fast listen. Dutch Drum and Bass connoisseurs Lenzman & Dan Stezo go back in time with the launch of their ‘Soul Tape’, an actual 60 minute cassette tape meant for the discerning Drum and Bass lover.

The Soul Tape is a limited give-away. The hand-crafted package comes in a hard-cover box, with additional T-shirt and a variety of stickers - all with custom artwork by Team Blazin'. Besides that The Soul Tape is a ‘cool’ and fresh (but hyper-traditional) take on the mix-format, it stems from Lenzman and Dan Stezo's 90s ritual of making Hiphop tapes for each other in school.

The Soul Tape exhibits tracks from the world’s finest Drum and Bass artists, blended by Lenzman with Dan Stezo’s narrative slang and distinct voice-over. As a combination they have worked together since 2003, and recently increased their collaborative spirit both on stage and on record. 2014 saw their first release ‘Move & Focus’ together as a combination on the esteemed Metalheadz imprint as part of Lenzman's debut album 'Looking At The Stars.

Lenzman’s tremendous success in his genre and his tour the force around the world doesn't keep him from maintaining a close circle. Long time confidant Team Blazin' adds the artwork in the form of handwritten calligraphy which articulates the Hiphop aesthetics, the three artists’ connecting factor and their shared stylistic background.

The Soul Tape is not for sale, as it is an initiative out of love for the craft, the music and their heritage. The 50 limited edition tapes will be given away to fans over a period of time. Fierce has been an important figure in drum & bass for a long old time now. First starting out on No U-Turn at the age of 16 in the mid ‘90s, he’s gone on to properly earn his stripes, gracing respected labels like Prototype, Ram, Virus and so many more whilst setting up his own imprint Quarantine along the way. In short, the man’s reputation carries all across d&b and to all corners of its spectrum. You could call him a DJ’s DJ, or you could just call him what he is, namely insanely committed to exploring and scoring the nether regions of his chosen form. Fierce has always got material that other people don’t and he’s got an incredible knack and fusing it with tracks people know a bit better with aplomb. He really gets it, on a technical and physical level so we’re chuffed to be able to present this promo mix from him ahead of his upcoming back to back set with Zero T in Room Three on Friday 27th March.

If there was one thing we'd level at the drum & bass producer Xtrah, its that he fully comprehends the measure of precision and grit necessary to succeed in his chosen field. As this short mixtape, which was made ahead of his appearance in the Metalheadz Platinum hosted Room Three next week (Friday 27th February) shows, he's really struck a balance between the intricacies of those tunes hell bent on oodles of ghost snares and subtlety and the pomp and drive of the more tear out ready, mid range rollers. Honestly he's long been a guy whose tunes have sent computers in our Farringdon HQ into fits of frenzied Skype IMs, but there's something so short and sweet and yet so measured and exciting about the types of tunes he's included in this mix that makes us ache for the club doors to be open.

We wanted to share it with you this Friday lunchtime, in the hope that it'll inspire the same sort of thing in you this weekend.

Xtrah - FABRICLIVE x Metalheadz Platinum Mix

Exploring the darker, more atmospheric side of Drum & Bass, Xanadu soon caught the attention of one of the scenes greats, when Ant TC1 chose his track ‘Abstrakt’ as the winner of Outlook Festival’s producer competition in 2012.

Early support for Xanadu's tracks (such as 'Ventricle') came from a number of highly esteemed artists and DJ's including Mefjus, Fourward, June Miller and Kasra, but the ball really started rolling when he met the legendary Dom & Roland.

Dom invited him to release his first record on D&R Productions, the first original solo work (other than Dom's own) to be signed to the imprint. "Through The Oort Clouds" was the debut release, a full length LP which came out in January 2015

Xanadu currently has more music forthcoming on Dom & Roland Productions which we should see later this year.

Stress Factor Podcast 195 - DJ B-12 - July 2015 Summertime Drum and Bass Studio Mix (Mix 4 Mom)

In the words of Metalheadz boss Goldie: "Mikal is the silent assassin of the Headz camp". A quietly studious producer, Mikal's been working away this past year on producing his debut album for the label, which we're all told has now been handed in and is being celebrated in Room Two on Friday night. Called Wilderness there's still very little information about the record out there but we're assured that the album develops on the sounds and themes that Mikal has become known for and it features collaborations with Break, Xtrah, Sophie Barker (Zero 7), RIOT (Buraka Som Sistema) and Chimpo.

"When I signed him, I knew the potential he had in him [and] this album is the full realisation of that potential," Goldie continues. "He's worked very hard at perfecting his craft and I'm very happy to hear it. His inversion of d&b culture has always excited me, the dub element is something that resonates with me as a missing part to the puzzle in the Headz camp."

So with the toast for the record coming up this weekend, we're proud to be able to host Mikal's latest mix.

It was a special night in June of this year with 800+ people crammed into Xoyo's upstairs room (from pretty much before the very first needle was placed on the record until going past the nights extended close). Over a year ago now, we had Arkaik in the mix for us. His mix was packed full of dubs, including many from the minimal wizard himself, but amongst them all the name Xanadu stood out. His track Ventricle turned many heads last year and word soon spread about his forthcoming album on Dom and Roland Productions, which came out in January earlier this year.

The album was well received and had a number of stand out tracks, each with a unique, raw energy which is perfectly demonstrated in his track 'The Void' which, as Xanadu states in his interview with Lindsay at In:Reach, is "made out of lots of planks of wood being hit really hard."

Xanadu's podcast contains new music from himself as well as the likes of Philth, Disprove, Signal and Hyroglifics.

"This mix is a selection of mostly my own work, including some unreleased sketches and ideas which might become future album tracks, some recent tracks from my new compilation Cosmology, music from forthcoming releases and a couple of older tracks that went relatively under the radar. I also included a beat-less version of "The Lake" from my last EP Torchlight vol.1 which I personally enjoy listening to more than the original.

It is difficult to speak too much about my own work because I believe we are all transceivers of information, and therefore my thoughts on the music won't be the same as yours so why preach about it? The best way I could describe the mix is to say it is threading a line from past to future via the present, and stylistically somewhat skewed to what you might consider "typical" of my stuff...perhaps.

Stylistically I hope to have brought the more etheric side of my work to the forefront for this selection, making it, I hope a good repeated listen. I think the best mixes take their time and fill a space around other tasks rather than demanding your entire concentration for an hour or more.

Influenced by early hip hop culture Dave Sims started djing in 1986 mixing and scratching hip hop and funk breaks after being influenced by Grandmaster Flash,Bambaataa,DJ Cheese,Double D and Steinski;s lessons etc, this led on to buying a 4-track tape recorder and creating break mixes and hip hop tracks with local mc's,and playing at local parties. 
In about 1989 started going to raves and clubs like the Dungeon,Crypt, Telepathy and then later Paradise club (AWOL) and getting into house and early breakbeat ,djing at parties and raves staying with the music as it evolved through hardcore,jungle to drum and bass.. 
In 1996 started making tunes with DevParadox recording as “Nucleus “ releasing various12" and lp tracks of dark jazzfunkbreakbeat inspired dnb.,and deeper ambient tracks on various leading dnb labels including Reinforced, Goodlooking ,Metalheadz,Offshore,Paradox music,Arctic music.. 
Also staying with hiphop in 2000 releasing 2 BBoy break mixtapes with Break Dj Leacy,which have become classics in BBoy circles worldwide. 
2002 saw the creation of "Esoteric", a label exclusively for Nucleus/ Paradox material.which is going strong into its 19th release getting excellent reviews and regular plays by many of the scenes top djs including Goldie,Flight,Marky,Marcus Intalex.,Loxy. . 
As well as djing drum and bass Dave always stayed with his roots playing and collecting,funk,disco,b-beats,hip hop,house,jazz,broken beat ,afro,latin,etc,and has played at various events in Germany,France,Holland,Hungary,United States,Russia,Croatia,Australia,Switzerland,Norway,Estonia,Finland and can also be found playing more of a deep house/disco sound at various clubs/bars/parties in London.
