Acclaimed indigenous vocalist Emma Donovan and Melbourne rhythm combo The PutBacks come together to bring you Dawn, an LP of hard hitting and heartfelt soul songs telling stories of grief, struggle and redemption. Dawn is a gritty, uniquely Australian record, simultaneously classic and contemporary. The songwriting is in turns optimistic, angry and melancholic, and on occasions bruisingly honest. The music is fluid, live and raw, recorded in one room on eight channels of analog tape and the electric connection between Emma and the band comes through in every beat.

Emma grew up singing church songs with her maternal grandparents on the North coast of New South Wales. Her first secular gigs were singing in The Donovans, a band comprised of her mother and five uncles. With her mother, Emma sang country for years, and in her youth was a fixture at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, but she always yearned for the bluesier tones of her Father’s record collection, full of American artists like Laverne Baker and Etta James and Indigenous Australian artists like No Fixed Address and Archie Roach.

Years later, after touring and recording with many of the mainstays of Indigenous music and developing as a solo artist in her own right, Emma met members of The PutBacks, and finally she found a band with the gritty blues soaked tones she had been looking for. She also found, in PutBacks bassist Mick Meagher, a co-writer and collaborator on the the soul songs she had been waiting a lifetime to write and sing. The results are well worth the wait and hopefully, only mark the beginning of this oh-so-right collaboration.

New Strut Records compilation documenting the vibrant soul, AOR, jazz funk and disco scene across Hawaii in 1979-1985. Despite great musicianship and high quality studios, many of the recordings never made it to the mainland. Compiler Roger Bong of Aloha Got Soul brings together 16 rare tracks on one album for the first time.

“I was out in Venice with DJ Harvey," says Mark Barrott, "and "Kona Winds" came on the radio whilst we were sat by the beach having breakfast, looking at the early-morning surfers. I actually rang US directory assistance for the first and last time in my life to get the number of the station to get a track ID. I NEVER get bored of the spoken intro; last summer I was a little worse for wear in the middle of a DJ set by Es Vedra and I just looped the spoken intro and left it running for 30 mins… it sounded fine to me.”

Marvin Franklin With Kimo And The Guys - Kona Winds

“Ouro Enfim” is an unexpectedly blissful collaboration between Brazilian participant Luisa Puterman and Belgian participant Roman Hiele. On his previous albums and via releases on his Ekster label, Hiele’s productions tend towards alternately fierce and pastoral electronic abstraction, but “Ouro Enfim” reflects his love for bossa nova grooves. His contributions support Puterman’s beautifully understated melodies, which chime easily throughout the sunny arrangement. The result is utterly relaxing and transportive, with luscious Rhodes seeping into corners carved out by a blunt bassline. The lead and background vocals are provided by an unexpected guest: RBMA Paris lecturer and former lead singer of Stereolab, Lætitia Sadier, who turns in a sumptuous performance.

Funk was the syncopated groove that emerged in the mid-sixties through hits from James Brown and Dyke and The Blazers. It was a natural development out of rhythm and blues. Thousands of local bands tried to emulate Brown’s success, and in the process created a plethora of rare and sought after 45s and album cuts that have been mined by DJs and producers to fill floors or provide breakbeats. Whilst the 20 tracks on this compilation would cost you thousands of pounds to own on their original issue, that isn’t really the point. Instead you get to listen to magnificent grooves such as Mickey & The Soul Generations explosive ‘Iron Leg’, Andrew Brown’s blues tinged ‘You Made Me Suffer’ or the message music of 24 Carat Black.

On the 14th October 2016 J&D Records release three exceptional compilations that look at vintage African-American music through the prism of UK club culture. All Night Long, Can You Feel ThatBeat and Extra Added Soul will be available on CD & double vinyl and are compiled by DJ and award winning compiler Dean Rudland, with stunning artwork from his long-time collaborators The Unknown. Across the three volumes there are 60 tracks of soul, funk and boogie.

This one's not a jazz track, but I can't get it out of my head right now.
Recently re-released on Colemine Records, by The Flying Stars Of Brooklyn NY.
I've extended the intro and far too short break, and added a few tweaks to increase the playing time.
Also had to add some wise words from Herbie Hancock at the beginning to get round the copyright filter.
