This piece was commissioned by TANGRAM and premiered by TANGRAM at RYE Festival 2019, Rye, UK.

Erasure is a piece for flute, piano and yangqin, inspired by ‘Erased de Kooning’ by Robert Rauschenberg, a painting that seems to me reveals the relationship between art and spirituality. This piece plays with concepts of ‘creation’ and ‘deletion’, considered within the same process, as a way of reflecting the practice of meditation whereupon one gains thoughts as much as they learn to let them go. Erased de Kooning serves as a good example of how the removal of one subject can allow for the appearance of another ‘wonder’.

Distraídos ou hipnotizados, assim viajamos dentro da cabeça da coreógrafa Lígia Soares, lugar onde convida a entrar nesta experiência sonora que se inicia na parte ocidental da cidade, mais precisamente no muro do Cemitério dos Prazeres. Um itinerário comentado pela dramaturga a que se sobrepõe a nossa experiência pessoal, realizada no mesmo lugar mas noutro espaço temporal. Acompanhe esta viagem cheia de adrenalina, salpicada de ideias soltas que se encontram num trajecto heterogéneo, da Rua Saraiva de Carvalho à Igreja de Santa Isabel com um céu de Michael Biberstein com 50 camadas de tinta acrílica e 800 metros quadrados, com vislumbres da Coelho da Rocha, passando pela Casa Fernando Pessoa que, após uma remodelação do edifício de José Adrião, foi reaberta em Agosto 2020 apresentando um novo projecto museográfico. Deambular por cafés e livrarias, espreitar os Prazeres e a Estrela, explorar azulejos, cores, texturas. Passada Larga é uma viagem sensorial que desperta a atenção aos detalhes.

Distracted or hypnotized, we travel inside the head of the choreographer Lígia Soares, a place where she invites us to enter this sound experience that begins in the western part of the city, more precisely in the wall of the Prazeres Cemetery. An itinerary commented by the dramaturge to which our personal experience is superimposed, made in the same place but in another temporal space. Follow this journey full of adrenaline, sprinkled with loose ideas that are on a heterogeneous path, from Saraiva de Carvalho Street to Santa Isabel Church with a sky of Michael Biberstein with 50 layers of acrylic paint and 800 square meters, with glimpses of Coelho da Rocha, going by Fernando Pessoa House which, after a building rehabilitation by José Adrião architect, reopened in August 2020 presenting a new museographic project. Wander through cafes and bookstores, peek at Prazeres and Estrela, explore tiles, colors, textures. Broad Stride is a sensorial journey that awakens attention to detail.

Passada Larga por Lígia Soares

Nuno da Rocha studied Composition with Vasco Mendonça, Carlos Marecos, Luís Tinoco, Carlos Caires and António Pinho Vargas.

During the summer of 2009 he participated in the ‘19th internationale sommerakademie09’ in Austria, where he worked with the composer Nigel Osborne, the maestro Michael Wendeberg and the widely recognized contemporary musical group ‘klangforum wien’.

In February 2010, he took part of the ‘16th young composers meeting’ in Apeldoorn (Netherlands) with the ‘de ereprijs’ orchestra. This meeting was directed by Louis Andriessen, Richard Ayres, Martijn Padding, Jan van de Putte, Micheal Smetanin and Helena Tulve.

By commission of Antena 2/RTP, he wrote ”Quatro Últimas Canções, quatro personagens a partir do romance de Vasco Graça Moura” as the mandatory piece for the contest ‘Prémio Jovens Músicos 2012′ in the category of Vocal performance.

He won the 3rd prize of the Antena2/RTP Composition Contest 2012 with the piece “O que será do rio without John Cage?” for baroque orchestra.

He was one of the selected composers to the TENSO Young Composers Workshop 2014 – Mechelen (Belgium). Afterward he was one of the three finalists of the TENSO Young Composers Award in Copenhagen (Denmark).

He was selected to the ENOA Workshop "Composing for Voice" with Magnus Lindberg and Barbara Hannigan where he premiere his work "I could not think of thee as piecèd rot" for Soprano and Orchestra.

In June-July 2015, he took part of the ENOA Workshop “Opera Creation - Reflection” with Fabio Vacchi (Aix-en-Provence, France). Later (September 15), he joined into another ENOA Workshop with Martin Crimp (Ghent, Belgium).

In October 2015, he premiere his last score for orchestra. "RESTART", commission by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon, Portugal). This work was inserted in the opening concert of the new Gulbenkian season 15-16.

Nuno da Rocha was the Young Composer in Residence 2015 at Casa da Música (Porto, Portugal). As a result, he premiere three new works in the season.

In July 2016, he was one of the composers in residence “Song and Creation Residency” - Académie du Festival d’Aix-en-Provence (France).

In November 2016, his first album was released - “Mesmo que faça frio” - works for children choir.

Nuno da Rocha is one of the nominated composers for the TOTEM (Théâtre Opéra Texte et Écriture musicale) 2017-18, La Chartreuse - Villeneuve lez Avignon - Festival d’Avignon (France).
