"By Your Side" Anniversary Mixtape

Made while living in a van this spring around the cold mountainside of Albania. Belong is one of the sketches I made ( now fully produced) while travelling europe last year. I tried remembering the places I have visited with compositions surrounded by nature, recording foley & exploring synthesis. Belong is melancholic and warm with organic drums & sounds and vocal harmonies filling the space. It's about how I felt not belonging to a urban world anymore while experiencing such beautiful nature and rugged terrain.

This was the first mix/arrangement of this track. Sometimes the rawness of the 1st one comes out better than all those that follow.

Track Background/Production Notes
This entire track came about from a recent release by Waldorf Music introducing a new plugin for their famed Microwave 1 synthesizer, Waldorf's 1st product back in the late 80s. I managed to obtain one by chance in the early 90s via the emerging internet. Through a mailing list I was subscribed too, I found a synthesist in Texas I believe it was that really wanted a Korg Wavestation A/D which I had, but didn't really care for sound wise. It was bit thin, not beefy, and certainly not analog. I packed up the Wavestation and shipped trustingly to Texas. In return, I received a Waldorf Microwave 1. Would never do something like that today. Best trade ever though.

The Waldorf plugin acts as an excellent front end remote for the hardware. I pumped some patches from the plugin over to the hardware synth and just started coming up with this track recording the parts one at a time into Ableton of the OG synth.

I only added a few more elements post Microwave bits. Noise risers came from my Eurorack rig that I simply ran through one of my Low Pass filters with a bit of resonance during the arrangement of the track knob twiddling by feeling up and down for tension. 

I threw on a little Waldorf Streichfett (plugin as well even though I have the Hardware version on my desktop as well) for another high pad sound and the last bits that went in were the 303 Acid lines. I can't seem to not produce a track that DOES NOT have some 303 flavor.

Drums were in the box Ableton kits with a few extra samples thrown in to create the patterns I arranged.

The video of the song is currently in post-production, and consist of a fan-sourced collection of ‘Legotography’, where the assignment was to photograph a single Lego minifigure in a real-world setting depicting isolation and quarantine. The video is edited together by legendary film and video editor Bob Jenkis (Michael Jackson, Madonna, Chris Isaak)
