Our guest Cheryl Hobbs is the founder of Class Act Consulting Services. With a natural desire for helping people, Cheryl recalls wanting to be a nurse since she was a young girl. 

Starting as a full-time night nurse, Cheryl was raising four children on her own, going to nursing school, and working nights--but she persevered, eventually earning a spot as an instructor. 

Exercising her desire to reach beyond her local emergency department, Cheryl became a panel review nurse with the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

In addition to a passion for nursing, Cheryl was always interested in the law, and saw legal nurse consulting as an opportunity to exercise both of her passions at the same time! 

After taking a legal nurse consulting course, Cheryl and her business partner began their business. 

Starting with picking a company name, Cheryl and her partner began using the connections in their personal lives to find their first client. 

From graphic designers to attorneys, Class Act Consulting Services hit the ground running, spending very little in those first months just by utilizing their connections. 

Handling a wide range of cases, Cheryl even began volunteering her LNC services on cases involving medical issues--this helped her gain connections and show the value of legal nurse consulting to the district attorney’s office.

Advancing Nurse Coaching

Kim Krafft was a clinical educator nurse in a hospital in Southern California when she was approached by a start up in 2015 to help them launch their turning device for patients in the hospital.

Dr. Larsen started his campaign to mitigate complications from pressure injury by creating a device that alerts nurses to when tissue is being compromised.  The dream of this device started in 2010.

It took Dr. Larsen 5 years to get the device FDA approved and to the point where venture capitalists could see the value of the device.  In 2015, 5 years later, Kim was hired onto the team to help with the marketing strategy.

As with any business, your business is only as good as who you know and the opportunities you can find to get in front of the people who are paying.  Kim routinely sat in meetings with CNOs and hospital administrators.

In this unique episode, Kim talks about what it was like to be part of start up, what kind of effort was needed to succeed and what her next steps are now that the company was bought out (and is no longer a start up).

Challenges of Medical Device Start Ups

Yolanda Russell worked as a second career nurse on a medical-surgical unit.  While she loved her job, she still felt a yearning for something else and something that would create an impact and spur nurses to action.

She decided to start a podcast called Real, Raw and Free, but made the common mistake of not identifying who her audience really was.  As she discovered that she enjoyed talking to nurses and building up that relationship, she understood that her podcast needed to focus on talking to nurses.

Yolanda rebranded and redesigned her podcast to be called the Unfiltered Nurse.  It was an immediate hit with nurses and helped Yolanda curate an audience.  By listening to this audience, Yolanda was able to get ideas of the problems the nurses were having and how she could help.

Realizing that she was onto something big, Yolanda recognized that she needed a business coach.  She made the tough decision to invest $5000 in a coach to learn how to build something of her very own.  
The result was launching her Breakthrough Burnout method, which was her first 1:1 mentorship program.

With the feedback from this initial group, Yolanda made a lot changes to create the Breakthrough and Brand Mentorship program which she quietly and successfully launched to her audience.

Brad Ferris, RN worked at the bedside for many years.  

One of the things that frustrated Brad was the focus on the rhetoric of patient centric care, but working in a provider centric environment.

Brad noticed that the way we speak to our patients is very transactional.  

Our interactions tend to lack warmth and empathy mostly due to the time constraints we've been placed under.

Brad worked extensively in clinical research trials and came across artificial intelligence.  He worked with artificial intelligence with the patients and saw some interesting results.  

He began to explore how artificial intelligence in text messaging could create a patient centric environment.

Brad began writing scripts for the messaging that could interact with patients and help to create the beginning of a relationship.  

Not only that, by using AI, the messenger could answer an unlimited number of phone calls at the same time, negating the need to have a lot of staff putting patients on hold.

Brad's overall big idea was to take the transactional conversations we've been having with patients and turn it into therapeutic conversations that are inviting and rewarding.

Brad's innovative idea is being taken to marketplace to launch in clinics across the US to improve the conversations we are having with our patients.
