Wrote this track back in the summer of 2015 in Durham, NC while still at Duke. It was about 2am on a Saturday and there was a party going on downstairs / a big bonfire in the backyard. I felt exhausted from producing all day. I shut off my computer and left the studio to go hang with friends but there was some voice in my head telling me to go back. 

I booted the computer back up, wrote the chord progression in about 30 seconds, then randomly dropped 2 pieces of the acapella from Isley Brothers ft. Angela Winbush, Lil'Kim, 112 - "Float On" which fit surprisingly well. I brought a few friends into the studio soonafter and seeing the looks on their faces I knew this track must be finished.

Over the last 2 years I've made 186 versions and counting, and here is what it turned out to be. 

Fun fact: the original name of the project file was "Bout 2 Go 2 Sleep."

A label born out of both Berlin and Bergamo in Italy, Delta9Recordings has been able to tap into a host of influences since they first began releasing music. Focusing primarily on the dark, minimalistic and techstep sounds, they’ve acquired a vast back catalogue to help platform these tastes. And Delta9Recordings have ensured that the artists they’ve helped to bring through, from across Europe, also encapsulate the same stylistic features. This can be seen throughout their forthcoming ‘This Way Up’ EP from drum & bass producer SL8R, which adds a welcome addition to their back catalogue and further presents the label as having the ability to pick out the very best newcomers slowly making their way to the genre’s forefront.

‘No Fuss’ begins the EP, creating a dancefloor twist amongst its flipping samples and stepped up sonics. The track begins as it means to go on, with an urgency which ramps up and creates an appeal which translates directly into the clubs. ‘Asterix’ comes next and this record takes a heavyweight standard to a much harder level, as when the bass drops it snares you and pulls you down deep into its grasps. The layers of percussion which introduce the record don’t allude to how low you’re about to go as soon as the bassline dives to a subterranean depth, as the track’s skeleton rattles with its pure power. ‘This Way Up’ is more minimal in its approach, although as it breaks down the sense of urgency can’t be masked. Each bass stab and instrumental bleat builds on the next, before you’re once again taken in by SL8R’s uncompromising production standard.

‘Elastik’ brings ‘This Way Up’ to a close, offering up a slightly different version of the style which SL8R has showcased on the subsequent three records. At first ‘Elastik’ disguises itself as having a liquid underpinning, but the producer’s throbbing bass patterns and pelting drums make themselves known as the track drops and you’re suddenly grabbed by its power. SL8R’s formulaic music writing takes no prisoners and this is clear to see from one track to the next... That’s why he makes such a pivotal signing for Delta9Recordings and their groundbreaking roster.

18 months after the release of his debut LP, ‘Illusion Of Perfection’, San Francisco’s prolific Spencer Brown releases his new mix album on Anjunabeats: ‘Stream of Consciousness’.

Providing a deeper insight into his creative world than his first extended outing ‘Illusion Of Perfection’, Spencer has once again delivered a fresh take on a classic format - the mix album.
Few artists put such emphasis on allowing their DJ craft to inform their studio output. With a passion for extended live sets, Spencer blurs the lines between deep house, progressive and trance to keep those performances fresh and clubbers locked in from start to close.
From the angst of ‘Long Way From Home’ (alongside label heads Above & Beyond), to the driving energy of underground hit ‘Windows 95 On Acid’, Spencer is making waves: the former becoming a playlisted record on Sirius XM BPM, the latter a record box mainstay for Eric Prydz, Calvin Harris, Sasha and Deadmau5 and a number 1 techno release on Beatport.

Meticulously crafted through no fewer than 329 revisions, ‘Stream of Consciousness’ is a wide-ranging exploration of Spencer’s sound in 2019. From the serene soundscape of ‘SF to Berlin’ alongside label-mate and regular studio partner Ben Böhmer, to the peak-time progressive energy of Wilt Claybourne collaboration ‘Womaa’, the energy ebbs and flows, but never loosens its grip.
Spencer applies his own spin to breakbeat with ‘Chance On Us’, while ‘Pursuance’ with rising Anjunadeep star Marsh is a 90’s-flavoured rave cut.

Spencer explains his love of the mix format…
“The mix album took 329 revisions to finalise. I’m a control freak with my mixes—it’s deeply ingrained in my creative process. With that in mind, I didn’t send any tracks to anyone for mix help, and I created and mixed 100% of the final product. Creating an album of radio-edited singles has never interested me creatively. I prefer to craft music that keeps my listener in a flow state—working, studying, travelling, exercising, dancing, whatever it may be. I conceived my album as one carefully mixed piece: an hour and change of continuous music. It’s a collection of tracks I wrote from 2015 to 2019, inspired by the majesty of nature, missing a loved one, and the ups and downs of touring—all bundled into a single Stream of Consciousness.”

Released to much fanfare earlier in 2020, San Francisco’s Spencer Brown made a highly anticipated return to our label with his second mix album, ’Stream of Consciousness’. Featuring a selection of original material, written over the past five years and crafted into an all-encompassing singular journey, the mix album serves as an extensive insight into Spencer’s creative world, blurring his signature progressive sound with influences from deep house, trance and techno.

In the first of two companion EPs to the mix album, Spencer now presents five of the tracks that formed his ’Stream of Consciousness’ in an unmixed, full-length format. Among the highlights to emerge in this release are fan favourites ‘Lose You’ and ‘Foggy August’ (produced with Qrion), and his collaborations with Marsh (‘Pursuance’) and Ben Böhmer (’SF to Berlin’).

Spencer Brown’s ’Stream of Consciousness’ arrives as limited edition 2x12” vinyl on April 8, featuring fully unmixed and DJ-friendly versions of all twelve tracks from the album. The vinyl is available to pre-order now from the Anjuna Music Store.

Our upcoming release is a purely deep and dark number from French production wizard Oxius. A 5-track masterpiece, heavily inspired by the likes of Amoss and Philth, a real display of talented production in his very apparent and distinctive style.

Impossible to decide a favourite, each track in the EP impresses and builds upon the previous to culminate in an extremely complete package. Starting deep and mysterious, delving into the high paced and ferocious, and ending with a melding of the two - this EP maintains a level of excitement and energy which is difficult to achieve with such dark undertones.
