Welcome to the 2nd installment of NUVA. This week we had the pleasure of introducing Fuzzy, a beyond talented DJ from the epicenter of Arizona. Known for her hardcore to experimental tracks, her curation is defining a new sound for the Phoenix underground. 



Inspiration/ Story:

     I really wanted this mix to properly encapsulate my range of styles and inspirations in just the one hour so I jammed a lot of different vibes and genres in this thing. I love the medium of the radio show because it gives you so many opportunities to try things you wouldn’t do in a live environment. That's why there’s lots of experimentation going on here. I always think it's important to take risks when you're mixing and get yourself out of your comfort zone. I also wanted to take the opportunity to play some of the tracks I’ve played live but never recorded. If you caught my show at the jumpjump pop-up you might recognize some of this mix.

Fave DJ's/ Influence of Track Selection:

     I take a lot of my inspiration from DJs and producers that operate primarily within the furry community. There’s so much queer representation in those spaces and that translation of the queer experience to music is something I’ve always loved and always wanted to tap into myself. Some of my favorite producers and DJs in the furry community are: Emma Essex, DJ Hypofox, and DJ Pupstar. Other DJ’s that inspire me are: J. Rocc, DJ Babu, Magenta Skull, Love2Hate, Lil Kevo 303, dj sometimez, Seattle, BrehCat, DJ Sharky, and DJ Gator Aids. I listen to their mixes and music all the time and the quality of their work motivates me to keep trying new things and pushing my limits.

Dream Collabs:

    I’ve always wanted to do a show with the 909 Worldwide crew, the Don’t Drowned collective, and Growl. It’s also been a dream of mine to play a set at Anthrocon, and MFF.

Hype Song:

     Banned Forever by Renard has been my hype up song since I first heard it in 2012 and it’ll probably be my hype up song forever.

Opinions on Current Scene/ The Future of the Scene

     It’s great that we have a scene at all. When I was a kid I always thought hardcore electronic genres were too niche and abrasive for there to ever be any shows representing them. The fact that I’m seeing groups out here pack warehouses with hundreds of people to jump around to gabber and happy hardcore all night makes me so grateful that I’ve stuck to this niche long enough to see this all happen. 

     That being said, there are some obvious changes that need to be made in the scene for us to keep thriving and to keep putting on great events. We are currently going through a rough time right now as pretty much every rave thrown this month has been shut down by the cops. The venues we’ve only just started getting comfortable in are closing down and it’s putting everyone involved in these events in a weird position. We all just wanna put on good shows and play good music and give the ravers of Phoenix a night to remember. I hope organizers are able to cast away their ego’s and work together because the scene will undoubtedly die otherwise. Regardless, I really believe in this scene, and I believe in the efforts of those involved.

Advice to Raver/ DJs/ Scene

     My favorite piece of advice someone has ever given me is “just ask.” If you wanna DJ, start asking promoters if you can hop on a set. Ask a fellow DJ for tips, or if you can b2b with them. Ask if you can help run sound or lights or visuals. Ask to collaborate or to jam together. Just ask. This applies to ravers, too. If you’re going to your first rave just ask someone if they wanna dance; if they wanna trade kandi; or even just ask what DJ’s they’re excited for. This builds community, this creates an overall more welcoming environment; and that’s what PLUR is all about, right?
