As proprietors’ of the Will & Ink label, Yaleesa Hall & Malin Genie have been maintaining a busy and consistent release schedule of top notch techno sounds, largely releasing their own, well received, productions.  The duo appeared on Hypercolour’s “10 Years” compilation in 2016 with the excellent “Buchan Trap”, and we’ve been blessed to secure a full single release with the on-point pair.

The mechanical funk of “Artin” swings with plenty of assured groove; the shuffling hats, dense kicks and dubby stabs that ping pong across this fierce production mark this out as a real killer cut.

Dario & Marco Zenker, AKA the Zenker Brothers, take time out from their busy Ilian Tape operations to remix “Artin” into a brutal yet funky techno goliath.  Congas perpetually roll forward, with frenetic 909 hats and raw and ready stabs in what may well be one of the Zenker’s finest remixes to date. 

The essence of funk continues in Hall & Malin’s music, with “Cahen”, a great slab of compelling techno that never slips too far into darkness, instead keeping an ever evolving groove and some abstract drone like synthesis to keep the mood buoyant.

Wrapping up the release is “Brown”, a track that finishes as urgently as it starts, perhaps with a cap doffed to the Purpose Maker sounds of a certain Jeff Mills, but broadening the palette to allow some trippy sound architecture and an effective breakdown mid way through.

Modern day techno supplied by a duo that will most certainly flourish over the coming months, Yaleesa Hall & Malin deliver the goods aplomb on this Hypercolour single.

Yaleesa Hall is back on his home label Will & Ink with two EPs in quick succession. After releasing his debut album in 2016 this is the first solo output from the Amsterdam based producer on the label. This first EP is entitled Zoe Hayley Laura and features a trio of tracks that melt electro, techno and broken beats in arresting ways. Opening up the EP is Zoe Price, a silky electro track with shooting synths and big downward bass strikes that add real depth. It's a urgent and arresting affair to wake up the floor. Hayley Roach then has much more forceful drums that come in one two punch combinations to the gut. Synths writhe and gurgle up top as pads rise up and down the scale and the whole thing is brilliantly large. Laura Pomeroy then rocks back and forth on its heels, with train track like percussion and malfunctioning machine stabs. It’s a real tussle between different elements and locks you right in as a result. Once again then, the irrepressible Yaleesa Hall leads from the front.

Modestep - Higher (Oliverse Remix)

I got asked to write something for the score of a science fiction film last year. The first thing I came up with was this futuristic instrumental that was a bit of a departure from my normal sound, but I loved it so much that I kept it for my own project and turned it into PEOPLE SAY. The upcoming album is all about pushing things forward, sonically and musically, taking things into the FUTURE in the broadest sense of the word. It's been a fan favorite ever since I dropped it live for the first time and I am excited to show a different side of myself as a producer and artist.
 
It was great working with the talented Paije on vocals, he really took the song to the next level and brings across the message loud and clear: always stay true to yourself...no matter what the PEOPLE SAY.

Ryuji Takeuchi provides Instruments Of Discipline with an EP of noisy, hypnotic tracks, ranging from stomping, left-field techno to melancholic ambience; the EP’s title ‘One’s Sentiment’ provides a thoughtful angle to this at times cacophonous collection, for while they are bristling with noise there is something contemplative about the pieces, expressed in a way that suggests more than one thought trying to take life at the same moment, Ryuji finds space for conflicting voices both spatially and in terms of mood, the first three tracks, ‘Ambivalence’, ‘Sadness’ & ‘Sorrow’ crawl with competing elements, synth lines drool over and meld with throbbing kick patterns, anxiety & excitement are tightly wound in focus as tracks build and develop, leaving the listener to navigate these abstract planes, intoxicated; the final track ‘Regret’ is a compelling piece of noisy, ambient minimalism that allows for an austere pause after the eruption of the initial works. It becomes evident that Ryuji’s journey as a producer, through periods of hard-techno, deep-minimalism and the more abrasive ventures on HueHelix, has created a powerful and nuanced voice that is fully on display in ‘One’s Sentiment’.
