Née en 1974 au Laos, Loo Hui Phang est l’une des scénaristes les plus respectées de la bande dessinée franco-belge. Ses histoires dessinées par Frederik Peeters (« L’Odeur des garçons affamés ») ou Philippe Dupuy (« Les enfants pâles », « Nuages et pluie ») sont hantées par les thèmes de l'identité, du désir et de l'étrangeté. Lauréate en 2021 du prix Goscinny du scénario pour « Black-out » (dessiné par Hughes Micol, sur un acteur métis de l’âge d’or hollywoodien), elle a imaginé et coordonné en janvier 2022 une exposition exceptionnelle au festival international de la BD d’Angoulême : « Écrire est un métier », sur la profession de scénariste de BD. Également metteuse en scène, dramaturge et romancière, Loo Hui Phang vit et travaille à Bruxelles.

Loo du fleuve (1/3)
Ses histoires sont peuplées de fantômes ou de personnages moralement ou sexuellement « ambigus », capables à tout moment de faire dévier le cours du récit – et nous emporter tel un fleuve en furie. Née sur les bords du Mékong en 1974, fuyant les khmers rouges avec sa famille, Loo Hui Phang étudia d’abord les lettres et le cinéma en Normandie. Bouleversée par une biographie de François Truffaut, formée à l’art du scénario par l’une des plus proches collaboratrices de celui-ci, et sommée de venir à Paris par Jean-Pierre Léaud en personne, celle qui aimerait être « hermaphrodite : un mélange d’Arthur Rimbaud et de Marguerite Duras » arrive à la bande dessinée « par accident », en 1999.

Depuis « La minute de bonheur », illustrée par Jean-Pierre Duffour aux éditions L’Association, on guette avec fougue, oui, les albums de Loo Hui Phang, qu’on peine à faire rentrer dans une case. Car quand elle n’écrit pas pour le 9e art, cette artiste du « frottement entre les genres », qui adore quand la BD « s’accouple » avec d’autres formes d’expression, met en scène des spectacles avec Bertrand Belin ou Rodolphe Burger, tourne un clip pour Moriarty, revisite son passé dans un bref premier roman sensuel nommé « L’Imprudence » (en clin d’œil à Bashung), adapte Houellebecq en court-métrage avec Melvil Poupaud et Kad & Olivier, ou part en Arizona filmer les drag-queens mexicaines. « Changer de territoire, interroger les limites... émanent de l’exil qui a fait bifurquer ma vie », dit-elle. But according to Bernard Faure, these attempts to uncover the historical Buddha neglect the rich literary, mythological, and ritual elements of the story. Faure, a professor of Japanese religion at Columbia University, believes that the Buddha’s life story is one of the great myths of modern times. In his new book, "The Thousand and One Lives of the Buddha," he traces how the life story of the Buddha has been told across cultures, from early Buddhist texts to contemporary art forms of manga and science fiction.
