Soundway present a very limited vinyl-only re-issue of an obscure LP by the enigmatic Nigerian artist Easy Kabaka Brown. The LP was originally released and recorded by Philips / Phonogram in 1976 and only sold in very small numbers. Musically it's a intriguing mix of mostly Nigerian highlife with a bit of afro-jazz sung in the language of Kalabari from the Delta region of Southern Nigeria.  From the bouncy good times of Belema to the deeper extended afro workout of Agboho this unique album stands out from thousands of others of it's time with a sound of its own that draws on many influences, with Congolese and latin touches to jazz trumpet and psychedelic organ lines.

Easy Kabaka Brown (Opotopo was his nickname) was a versatile and eccentric musician who recorded two full length albums (this is the first) and only a couple of 45s. We at Soundway have deemed this record way too sweet  to be forgotten, only to gradually ebb away and disappear with time. It's a record that will give you a golden, warm feeling. Your toes will tap, your face should smile and it certainly deserves to be heard by far more than only the few hundred people who bought it nearly 40 years ago. Strictly limited to 1000 x 180g vinyl copies and released in a rigid paste-on sleeve, these will not last long so don't sleep!

Moussa Doumbia - Keleya

The second track from Moussa in as many records, and deservedly so.

Keleya is a organ lead, afro-funk bomb with Moussa in full James Brown effect. Taken from the LP of the same title, originally released in 1977 on Pathe, and on 7” by Ivory Coast label SID in 1974. Suffice to say, they are expensive and rare.

Released on 7” in 1974, but very hard to find, and expensive too!

Amadou Balake - Super Bar Konon Mousso

Razor sharp, percussion heavy, guitar lead afro-latin funk.

Taken from the LP of the same name, released by the legendary Sacodisc label run by Lassisi (from Ivory Coast). Sacodisc were the a groundbreaking label experimenting in Afro-Latin crossovers - Balake travelled to the USA in the 1970’s to record with salsa musicians - recording and releasing albums with the likes of Monguito, Labi Sosseh, the great Amadou and Sweet Talks from Ghana.

New Strut Records compilation documenting the vibrant soul, AOR, jazz funk and disco scene across Hawaii in 1979-1985. Despite great musicianship and high quality studios, many of the recordings never made it to the mainland. Compiler Roger Bong of Aloha Got Soul brings together 16 rare tracks on one album for the first time.

One of the leading bands from Hawaii's 1970s scene, Aura rose through the ranks in military clubs and similar venues. A family band consisting of eight siblings at its core, by the mid-1970s they had become the first local group to perform at the hottest disco in town, The Point After, where they remained the club’s headlining act for the next 10 years.

Osei Korankye is the captivating flag bearer of Ghana’s seperewa tradition. The seperewa is the harp of the Ashanti and Akan people of Ghana. The instrument descended from the Sahelian north, prospered for centuries among various Akan groups, then almost disappeared as guitar playing spread from the coast.

Here is an introduction to Osei Korankye and his instrument, as told by musician and producer Colter Harper, who made this album come to life:

"I was surprised when Ghanaian friends would ask me where the seperewa was from. It goes to show that the instrument, once widely played in Ghana's Ashanti region, has faded from public memory after being replaced by the guitar in the early 20th century.

As a fan of the harp traditions of the Sahel and Sahara, the seperewa gave me a way of hearing how these styles had filtered down to the West African coast and been shaped by Akan languages, dances, rhythms, and philosophies.

Osei has dedicated his life to carrying this tradition forward as well as sharing it with Ghanaian and Western students. His artistry and humility is readily apparent in this recording, which we hope will make new fans of the seperewa - both at home and abroad." (Colter Harper, Jan 2016)

Based out of San Francisco, Extra Classic is a unique live band formed with a keen appreciation of vintage reggae & vintage sounds. The aesthetic, and certainly the skilled method of their production, is an ode to the art of that classic style as referenced to the term coined by the Cool Ruler himself. Recording in their own studio, Nopal Recording, the band employs a taster’s choice of analog equipment and is devotedly tracked, spliced and mixed in-house direct to tape. However, as the group’s name itself implies, there is a dose of something extra and new in this swirling mixture of space echo, heavy phase, and emotive, psychedelic California-soul. 

Built upon the rock of an early-era dancehall swing, their first single in conjunction with Brooklyn-based imprint Names You Can Trust entitled In This Life, is a perfect slice of lover’s rock gone sideways, a decidedly left-coast piece of roots and bliss driven by Adrianne’s lovely lead vocals and the steady, dusty echoes of the locked in players. Presented in the traditional format with a B-side version as per NYCT fashion, the dub mix incorporates a soothing dose of synare beams and underwater instrumental dreams.
