Written as a companion piece for Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, this piece explores the elements of unrequited love that reflect on some of the more toxic and negative emotions an individual can feel when they long for another person but the feeling is not mutual. With this one-sided love, there is a whole variety of emotions and actions a person can go through throughout this unhealthy obsession, leading to potential degradation of mental and physical health, all for the pursuit of the unattainable.

String Nonet 'Let The More Loving One Be Me' (Premiere Performance)

This track was an early study for what became the exploded sound project. uses a single vocal sample in 3 transpositions, decomposed into individual partials panned extreme left and right so that neither speaker contains the complete picture which is reassembled by the listener. The result is a somewhat disorientating ambient experience that rewards close listening.

This is an extended extract from my sound installation The Exploded Sound which was exhibited at the Jakopic gallery in Ljubljana in September 2012 as part of the ICMC conference and the EarZoom festival.
The recording is made from a fixed point which I suppose misses the point somewhat but it does give an impression of the aesthetic of the piece. Slowly evolving static chords hang in space. Each of the 60 loudspeakers contains separate partials of the sound. Walking among them allows the listener to explore the interior of the sound. Occasionally speech sounds emerge, decompose or come into focus in addition to the static sounds. The excerpt starts with one of the more active phases of the piece (it goes through different behaviours, never quite repeating itself) with speech sounds entering and starting to fall apart. During the second speech section the harmonic material gradually drops out and can be heard returning one speaker (partial) at a time!
