Some kind of meditation on the English motorway system. logistics centres. magic. black latex. wet carpet. vibrations in the countryside. exploded tyres. late harvests. surveillance capitalism. The ghost of my old love affair with Shoegaze. unbearable inertia. casual brutality. 

This is not dance floor material, but a chance to return to more subtle, ambient and experimental territory.

Special mention to Aircode and Zero Crossing Point (who both feature here twice) for their incredible albums released early this year which were a powerful inspiration to finally get around to making this mix.

Welcome back to NYX on Voices Radio. This month we’ve selected tracks that connect us back to ancient traditions of May and the return of summer - music that conjures unity, resilience & connection between people & the land, and a fiery love that transcends all borders. 

Through the lens of the Hawthorn - one of our most wild & enchanted trees -  we move through folk traditions, ambient, drone, & experimental sounds that ignite our collective’s passion for peaceful union. This show features music from Palestinian artists and labels releasing music to help raise support and funds for the people of Gaza. Bringing home the May, this month’s 11:11 feature is by artist Clementine Blue, introducing a beautiful track called ‘Meditation', a collaboration with Tokyo-based musician ASUKA. Welcome back to NYX on Voices Radio. This month we’ve selected tracks inspired by the coming of Midsummer.
Rotating through loops of drone, experimental soundscapes, ambient, choral and electronic music we honour the sun and the pulsing energy of the summer solstice. Our mix reflects on the joy of extended daylight, early morning raves, euphoria, being out in nature with birds and insects in full song. Vittoria Totale is a curator, voice artist and writer. She works at the intersection of music, contemporary art and language, with a particular interest in creating performative and imaginative open-source spaces. Vittoria’s DJ sets are part of an ongoing research of voice in sound and voice as sound, ranging from vernacular, classical, to contemporary explorations. Totale has long been part of Threes Productions and Terraforma and is part of the curatorial team of CIRCA. She released the gggglllloooossssaaaa album on Villa Lontana Records, probing the realms of voice and sound and their role as catalysts of untamed narratives.

Broadcast 002: NYX

VOID was created for a multi-sensory installation by the same name, VOID, with visual artist Dan Tobin Smith (Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton) and The Experience Machine (Beyonce, James Blake) for London Design Festival in September 2019. Performed as a live electronic meditation between large scale projections and light refraction, VOID embodied expanded space and imperfections inside gemstones. Challenging ancient, ecstatic and elemental energy of gemstones, NYX’s sonic immersion commands the power and magic of collective female voice and electronics to move through symbiosis in nature.

NYX’s approach to post-digital performance and composition is influenced Meredith Monk’s extended vocal technique, Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares’ charged harmonics, the electronic and acoustic body manipulations of Holly Herndon, the viscerality of Sunn 0)))’s ecstatic noise experiences and participatory community music projects like Peter Broderick’s The Beacon Sound Choir. Alongside performances, the collective continues to research health and social benefits of sonic immersion in relation to ethnomusicology, sound therapy, collaboration, feminism and new digital technologies.
